The Villa that hosts Camin Hotel Luino has long been a distinctive feature of the town. It was built as a private residence in 1898 by the Hussy family, Swiss entrepreneurs originally from the Aargau Canton.

Surrounded by a beautiful garden, the Villa features elegantly decorated ceilings, wooden and stone mosaic floors, colorful stained glass windows and remarkable fireplaces, such as the one in the main room. The influence of the northern culture is also found in the original little tower “a loggiato”.

In the early 1970s, the Luz family, German entrepreneurs, bought the property, uninhabited for a few decades, in a terrible state of conservation and turned it into what we know today as Camin Hotel Luino. The renovation lasted a few years and brought the villa back to its original splendor.

LUINO & THE LAKE MAGGIORE
“I saw a wedge-shaped gap between the mountains on the other side and thought that it should be Luino” (Hemingway)

Nobody can forget the main town on the Lombardy side of the Lake Maggiore, including Hemingway. A few kilometers from the Swiss border, typical and elegant with its Mediterranean atmosphere, it attracts many tourists.

Take a walk along the lakeshore and you will admire the old port, projected during Napoleon’s time, the church of Madonna del Carmine (15th century), the house of Serbelloni (18th century) and the adjacent palace, palazzo Verbania.

Travellers feel thrown back to the old Lombard Era by taking a romantic walk to discover the old historic center, rich in Renaissance and Baroque buildings, courtyards and crafts/artisan shops. The most colorful and picturesque street market takes place on Wednesdays and it dates back to the sixteenth century. Every week, especially in summer, it attracts many tourists.

THE LAKE
Lake Maggiore is one of the most beautiful Italian lakes and has enchanted the great Italian and foreign artists who have stayed here. It is believed to be the largest of the glacial pre-Alpine lakes, hence the name “Maggiore”, its banks are in Lombardy, Piedmont and Switzerland.

Surrounded by mountains and hills that shelter it from the cold northern winds, the lake has the Ticino River among its tributaries, a historic water route connecting the Po Valley to Central Europe.

THE ISLANDS
Among the many beauties of this lake are its 11 islands, 8 of which are in Piedmont and 1 in Lombardy. The fascinating archipelago of the Borromean Islands, between Stresa and Verbania, includes Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori.

On three characteristic cliffs are the remains of the Fortezza Vitaliana sought by Count Ludovico Borromeo and called Castles of Cannero. Not to be missed are the island of La Malghera, the isle of Partegora and the beautiful isle of St. Giovanni in front of Verbania, where Arturo Toscanini lived for a long time in the seventeenth century Palazzo Borromeo.

VILLAS & CASTLES
Beautiful villas and imposing fortresses and castles are located around the lake and its islands and bear witness to the history and culture that enrich the charms of this place: start with the Castello Visconteo of Locarno, the Rocca of Arona and the Rocca Borromea in Angera, which now houses a doll’s museum.

Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Madre and Isola Bella, the eighteenth-century Villa Ponti in Arona and Villa Treves in Belgirate, which hosted among its guests Gabriele D’Annunzio and Giovanni Verga, are just some of the very interesting villas.

Villa Ducale and Villa Pallavicini with its zoological park are located in Stresa, whilst the splendid Verbania hosts many beautiful villas such as Villa Giulia and Villa Taranto and the nearby Villa San Remigio.

NATURE
Nature lovers will find Lake Maggiore the ideal place to enjoy their holidays thanks to the many botanical gardens, including the one in Villa Taranto with more than a thousand plants, the Alpinia one extending over 40,000 sqm., the Camelia Park in Locarno and the gardens located in the various islands.

There are also many natural reserves such as the National Park of Val Grande and the Natural Park of the Ticino Valley, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

ACTIVE HOLIDAY
Lake Maggiore is a natural paradise for sport lovers. In the areas around the lake you can practice sports such as trekking, biking, golf, and horseback riding, surrounded by natural landscapes of rare beauty.

The lake waters are ideal for sailing, canoeing, yachting, water skiing and scuba diving activities, with shore facilities offering various courses for all level athletes, particularly on the Lombardy side of the lake.
