10 minutes from Chambéry city centre, the Château de Candie overlooks the capital of Savoie with a stunning panorama of the Chartreuse mountain range.

In the heart of a magnificent six hectare park with century-old trees and fountains, this authentic 14th century fortified house combines past and contemporaneity for an idyllic stay. Built in the Middle Ages in Chambéry-le-Vieux, the Château de Candie is one of the most captivating places in Savoie.

Perched on a hill, this château is surrounded by a hundred-year-old forest and the six hectare park is the perfect place to relax with trickling fountains, trees bursting with colour, a vineyard and an incredible panorama of Chambéry and the Chartreuse mountains. In addition to its rich history the Château de Candie is also a place of modernity.

HISTORY
Nestled on the Saint Ombre Hill above the eight hamlets of Chambéry, the Château de Candie offers breathtaking views of the Chartreuse mountain range, the Dent du Chat and the Col du Granier. Over the centuries there have been many noble owners of the château and although much time has passed, they have all left a long lasting legacy.

The Candie Family
The first testimonies of a fortified house belong to the noble Candie family previously named Chaffaron. They were close with the House of Savoie and the two families would hunt together in the Candie woods. The Candie family would also take part in tournaments in Chambéry and it was here that they could best display their family emblems.

Their coat of arms is described in heraldic terms as gules with golden fleurs-de-lys and a sky blue band stretched across the front. Their coat of arms is often accompanied by their motto “Backwards” which, in reference to the French poet La Fontaine, serves as a reminder that like crabs, the wise sometimes step backwards.

1664 – The Sarde Family
After being successively sold several times, the Château de Candie is acquired by Jean André Sarde, a merchant from Piemont in northern Italy. The family lived there for over a hundred years. The older buildings that we can still see today were built and rebuilt during this period.

Henry François Joseph Sarde, then titled the Baron de Candie, had no heirs so left his estate and his other possessions to the Hospital des Malades, Charité Hospital and the Orphan House of Chambéry.

1844 – The Tredicini Family
Caroline de Saint Séverin, wife of the nobleman Tredicini becomes the new owner the château during an auction. The family then lived there for a just over 60 years. Some archives allow us to reconstruct the state of the château at the beginning of the 20th century. The first floor was composed of a living room, dining room, kitchens and a large entrance hall.

The second floor had the same layout with numerous living rooms. As for the third floor, there were several bedrooms and servants’ quarters. The Tower, separate from the main building, was first used as a dovecote, transformed into a chapel and was also used as a painting workshop.

1990 – The Lhostis Family
Didier Lhostis antique enthusiast and creator of leather goods purchases the château and decides to restore it, a project that lasted nearly four years. The Château de Candie was then opened as a hotel in 1994. We can still admire his unique and elegant decoration to this day.

The Château’s secrets
Some ancient documents speak of hidden places inside the château, but up until now they have never been revealed. Perhaps you will accidentally stumble across one. Who knows what secrets they have been keeping for centuries?

2016 – A fresh start
Now we too have fallen under the spell of the Château de Candie. We are the last to have acquired the château and we think we will settle for a few centuries. May the future bring us as much success as its previous owners.

THE TOWER
The Tower offers guests an extraordinary experience at the Château de Candie. The three floors of the fully privatised tower are divided into a lounge, bedroom and bathroom with a large double bathtub.

THE WINES
As early as the 14th century, the Candie family manor was surrounded by vineyards, which were sometimes crossed by pilgrims, who traveled to the Alps to pray to the patron saint of travellers, the Virgin of Saint Ombre, in the village below.

In 1879, the vines planted in the clay-limestone soil on the south-facing slope were destroyed by phylloxera. The vines were replanted two years later and then abandoned for over a century. In 2003, the owners decided to restore the land and in 2009 the Perrier family replanted the plot with Viognier.

Viogner is a white grape variety that is well known in the north of the Rhone valley, but it is said to be of Alpine origin and related to Mondeuse blanche, from Savoie. It thrives in the sun but suffers from strong heat so naturally it is found in the Château de Candie’s mountainous climate.

Each year, 3000 bottles of “Candie 1891” dry white wine are produced. The pale, clear golden colour shines like dew pearls in the first light of day. The arcs are delicately outlined, a guarantee of its finesse, just like that of the gastronomic cuisine of chef David Loisel and his team.

On the nose, we find the typical aromas of viognier: notes of peach, exotic fruits, and more subtle notes of violets, in keeping with the warm and elegant spirit of our restaurants. The attack is full, the middle is unctuous, coating the taste buds with a saline touch to finish.

The fresh and aromatic character of the Candie 1891 vintage can be enjoyed in any season. During a picnic in the château grounds, by the pool, at the table in our restaurants, the Cantine and the Orangerie, or in the more intimate setting of our rooms. This wine is sold at the château reception.

THE SWIMMING POOL
Enjoy a moment of tranquility by the pool. Open in the summer, you can soak up the sun and cool off in the clear blue water all with a view of the château and the beautiful countryside.

But what has made Savoie world famous is also its culinary specialties. These specialties being the obvious such as the cheese, wines and beers but also the lavaret fish, crozets, syrup, charcuterie and Genepi.

CHAMBERY
Former capital of the Savoie Duchy, Chambéry was also the city where Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a famous Swiss writer and philosopher lived from 1736 to 1742.

The cobbled streets in the old town are steeped in history and at the turn of a corner there are sometimes beautiful surprises waiting for you such as the castle or Elephant Fountain. After strolling around and perhaps visiting some museums why not stop for a coffee and try some delicious cheeses from one of the market stalls.

ACTIVITIES
The Château de Candie is an ideal starting point for a large variety of activities in the region. Go shopping in Chambéry, hike up to the Croix de Nivolet, explore Hautecombe Abbey or enjoy a walk in Bauges Geopark.

Put on your skis, your snowboard or your snowshoes and hit the world famous Savoie slopes. Swim or sail on Lake Bourget, then spend the evening at the Grand Circle casino in Aix-les-Bains. Here, there is something for all tastes, all seasons and for all weather.

HAUTECOMBE ABBEY
The 12th century Cistercian Hautecombe abbey shelters the necropolis of the Princes of Savoie. The Gothic abbey overlooking the lake is among the most visited sites in Savoie Mont Blanc.

In the early 12th century Benedictine monks settled north-east of Lake Bourget, on Cessens mountain. Becoming Cistercians following the passage of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, they descend to the lake in 1137.

The abbey had a strong influence in the Middle Ages, but fell into the hands of abbots more inclined to spend the income of the abbey that to maintain it, and the abbey eventually fell into ruin. During the French Revolution the abbey became national property but it was looted and abandoned.

It was the King of Sardinia Charles-Felix who restored the Hautecombe abbey to make a necropolis in tribute to his ancestors. In 1826, Cistercian monks returned to the scene.

With the departure of the monks in 1992, the Archbishop of Chambéry proposed the continuation of prayer at the Abbey to the Chemin-Neuf community. He also ensured the maintenance and the restoration of the monument in liaison with the public authorities.
