During a heavenly night, Saturn met the young star Sothys; even Venus never seemed so beautiful. Their meeting was astonishing and Saturn was overwhelmed with passion for her; this threw the regular rhythm of the stars into confusion.

Venus could not bear the fact she was not anymore the most beautiful star in the sky. She took her revenge and Sothys fell into the dark of the night and disappeared. Saturn cried over forty days and forty nights and flooded the Earth.

During centuries, the world heard nothing about Sothys until the day when…Sothys reappeared to deliver her secret to the Earth : she dedicated herself to women in order to preserve their beauty and happiness. As a tribute, Men venerated her as a Goddess.

A beautiful place, full of history.
Dating back to immemorial times, the Château de Pondres has existed since 1195 (we know this thanks to the will left by the Lord of Anduze). It’s composition and interior design evolved over the centuries.

An important work campaign, conducted in the mid-17th century by Pierre II de Crouzet, Advisor to the King and President of the Chamber of Accounts of Montpellier, gave the castle its current form. Pillaged in the Revolution, the northern wing was burned down at the beginning of the 20th century, and it gradually fell into disuse.

It’s complete restoration, carried out under the aegis of Historical Monuments, has recently been completed. Today it has regained it majestic presence, serving now as a place of welcome, art and culture

Origins
The origins of the Château de Pondres are lost in time. An angle of wall at the base of a cellar in the castle, unrelated to the present layout, suggests the existence of a very old structure, which is now missing or located under the Courtyard.

Archaeological proof reveal a strong presence of Roman and Gallo-Roman remains – The temple and Coach house leave us speculating – which some people date back to the Celtic era.

Close to the river, in the lower limit of the domain, a lead hand-made element was found 12 meters deep by recent drilling, leaving us guessing as to the origins.

The majesty and tranquility of the place, located not far from the chalcolithic site of Fontbouisse, and reminiscent of the sacred spaces of prior times, also portend a very ancient human presence.

The 12th Century
The first written record dates back to the year 1195. It is the will of the Lord of Anduze who leaves “the Château de Pondres with all its rights to his offspring. The building at the time was a stronghold, and certainly included the current dungeon and the lower structures of the western and northern elevations of the castle.

Early Middle Ages
Since the end of the 12th century, over a period spanning more than four centuries, the absence of written documents is largely the result of the ravages of the French Revolution. “It is Monday, 2nd April, 1792 around 9 am in the morning that began the devastation of the Château de Pondres.

Looting of wheat, wine and other food products, theft of jewels, personal belongings, artwork and furniture belonging to Mr. and Mrs. le Marquis de Montlaur, succeeded “the archives, burnt in the front court of the castle.

Information transmitted by mouth from generation to generation, testifies to the ownership of the Château de Pondres by the Anduze family until the year 1400.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the stronghold of Pondres, an important part of a group of acquisitions and conquests, entered by alliance into the patrimony of the powerful Lord of Ganges.

On the 28th of March, 1651, the “castle, land and seigniory of Pondres” were sold to Pierre II de Crouzet, “Advisor to the King, President of the Chamber of Accounts of Montpellier”.

The 17th Century
Pierre II de Crouzet undertook a very important work campaign, spread over 10 years from 1654 onwards.

This work was the subject of detailed and notarized “prix-faits”, concerning the production of cut stone, woodwork, and ironworks related to the castle, but also related to the construction of stables, gardens, a lock and various planning of the Park.

Pierre II de Crouzet gave the Château de Pondres the essential part of its present composition. The implementation of the monumental staircase appears to come from this period.

His son, Pierre III de Crouzet, presented as “Chevallier, Counselor of the King, President in the sovereign Court of Aydes Accounts and finances of Montpellier” made Pondres the seat of the Marquisate of Montlaur, by his marriage with Anne-Jeanne de Bousquet of Montlaur on 17 January 1686.

The 18th Century
Pierre IV de Crouzet, Marquis de Montlaur, succeeds his father, the third. Anne-Jeanne, her only child, by marriage with Joseph Henri Eugène, brings the Villardi Quinson’s coat of arms to the Château de Pondres in 1740.

Joseph Henri Eugène and his son Gabriel Joseph provided the paternity with the sumptuous embellishments of the north wing of Château and many of the park’s main plantations. “He had spent considerable sums of money’’ and the castle ‘’had made it one of the most agreeable mansions in the province.”

The 19th Century
Joseph Isidor de Montlaur, at age 13, fled Pondres with his father Gabriel Joseph Villardi Quinson de Montlaur in 1792, on the evening of the devastation of the Castle, to take refuge in Germany.

He returned to his estates at the beginning of the century to inherit it, as well as many neighboring properties – Domaine de la Clotte, estate of Villa, Mas de Raymonville – in 1818, after the death of his father.

Joseph Isidore, a talented musician and Mayor of Villevieille on three occasions, managed the vast agricultural estate he extended through a vast campaign of land acquisitions.

In particular, we credit him with the monumental portal positioned on the road of Alès, which today has been moved to the entrance of the Windmill to become the main entrance of the Château de Pondres.

A precise and carefully designed property plan was drawn up at this time, representing both the remarkable landscape and architectural developments. Was it indicative of the reality of the domain in the mid-nineteenth century, or a plan that the Marquis de Montlaur wished to implement?

The complete reconstruction of the south wing from the great portal and the Tower of Levant, including a complete interior redesign, was the work of Raymond Archambaud de Montlaur, son of Joseph Isidore. Upon the death of his father on December 25, 1843.

Raymond Archambaud de Montlaur, chemist and genius alchemist, probably discovered in his laboratory built at the top of the donjon the chlorate of potassium, which had immense industrial applications.

The realization of the sumptuous rooms from the 1st floor are probably attributable to him, as are the setting up of the crenellations and the brattice in the coronation of the north wing of the Castle.

Elie Esprit Ghislain Amaury de Montlaur received by donation from his father Raymond Archambault on 22 February 1896 the “castle and estate of Pondres, park buildings and factories dependent on it and composed of the Château de Pondres, gardens, housing and operating buildings, Cellar with casks, pastures, courtyards and terraces, water features, hermes and olive groves with a capacity of 112.60 ha […] »

The 20th Century
On the 5th February 1920, in the presence of a notary, Chrestien de Sommières, Elie Esprit Ghislain Amaury Villardi of Quinson, Marquis of Montlaur, sold the Château de Pondres and its surroundings to Jocelyn Auguste Pécout, an agronomist.

On the death of the latter, during the Second World War, the historical domain of Pondres became part of the Debras family. In the 20th century, the monument was abandoned and many remarkable developments of the Park disappeared under the the vegetation.

The collapse of the roof and then of the floors sent the Castle into ruin, with the Northwest Tower threatening to collapse.

The Historic Estate of Pondres was sold in February 2002 to the General Council of the Gard, which in turn sold it on 20 November 2006 with very precise specifications on restoration.

This was the start of a huge campaign to restore the castle, lasting 10 years. Under the aegis of the Conservation of Historic Monuments, every stone, tree and specific element of the castle, its outbuildings and its park was repaired, consolidated, replaced, restored, following the strict guidelines of the tradition of art and respecting the historical aspects.

Equipped with the most modern comforts, the Château de Pondres, on this spring day, prepares its return to life.

A haven of greenery
Closed-in by walls to the east and west, the Castle Park extends over 15 hectares, between the Aygalade river to the south and the former serpentine, supplying water to the windmill, to the north.

Beautiful and untouched nature
The park of the Château de Pondres belongs to a distinctive ecosystem. From the Mediterranean vegetation in its southwestern corner – cypresses of Provence, Aleppo pine, hackberry, holm oaks, laurestine, coronilla … – there are alluvial plains of hardwood forests, fresh from the Aygalade river, formerly much larger.

These classified woods contain exceptional fauna and flora. Around the great white oaks, that can date back more than two centuries, ash, maple, linden, yew and elm trees emerge from the undergrowth.

Forest paths lined with ivy, laurel, boxwood, holly or a carpet of St. John’s wort, noble alleys planted with plane trees from the 18th century in strict alignment to give the park its structure. An Atlantic cedar, dean of the site, with a base circumference of 3.10m, is about 300 years of age.

The Castle Gardens
As you approach the Monument, refined gardens and lawns have been handcrafted, the oldest lined with enormous plane trees leading out from the towers, planted in 1775.

The courtyard, terraces, French gardens, buttes and rockeries have been completely restored … Surrounded by stones and the varied and warm colors of creepers, flowering shrubs,, rosebushes, nympheas and vivid climbers.

Water and structures
Channelled from distant lands, invaluable for man, for animals, agriculture and the mills, water has carved out the topography of the buildings and park of the Domaine de Pondres.

The Well of Donjon
The presence of an underground vein certainly played a part in the positioning of the Castle Donjon. In the heart of the rocky bar that separates it, is a rectangular handmade well, from where we can hear the rushing of water, 8 metres below. A vital resource in the case of a s iege..

Reservoirs
Below the terraces of the orange groves lies an immense basin buried, vaulted and built of stones, which collected the water channeled from the area around and from the grounds of Fontbuysse located several kilometers to the south east.

Fed by the water runoff from the western areas of the Domaine. The basin feeds:

  • By direct gravitation, a french-style garden pond, cool rooms, wash house, all the way to the mills by terracotta clay pipes.
  • By manual ascent and then motorized by water to the stone reservoirs, followed by steel for the needs of the Castle.

Water supply for the Mills
A complex network of canals recycled and transported the waters of the lands east of the Domaine to the mills basins.

Written text mentions the existence of a lock which deviated the river waters, of which no trace has been found. Arriving at the mills, the water flowed through two vaulted galleries, and operated the mechanisms in charge of grinding the seed and pressing the olives.

The mills were inactive during drought periods. The 20th century saw the gradual disuse of these remarkable hydrological developments as the runoff diminished due to climatic changes, and the numerous man-made, especially road, installations often broke the supply chains.

During the restoration of the park, an active recovery campaign of runoff and underground water was organized from the newly constructed south lands.

The old canals and serpentine quarries, re-built with stones and waterfalls, have brought water back to the mills. Trickles of water or streams, depending on the season, winds through the Domaine below the french gardens, bringing a touch of freshness to the Park.

These canals, which are an important part of the mills, are a real work of art. Five segmented arch bridges, whose strength, dimensions and width of passage seem to indicate the importance of past activities.

Source
The source of resurgence of subterranean veins coming from the neighboring hills, blocked in their ascent by the rock bar which traverses the Castle, the source feeds the long stone basins throughout the year. Unsure of its past use, but surely having a multiple of uses, water is invaluable for : washing, drinking troughs, ponds…

Cooler
A dome of terracotta brick, once buried and covered with thick vegetation. An entrance at the foot of the building permitted the placement of ice, which was collected in winter from the edges of the river and conserved until summer periods.

Ponds, fountains and waterfalls
A dome of terracotta brick, once buried and covered with thick vegetation. An entrance at the foot of the building permitted the placement of ice, which was collected in winter from the edges of the river and conserved until summer periods.

The water enters the large pool by a work of art, carved in shell, decorated with pilasters and a bow in a semi-circle, in the base of the retaining wall. The pool has a volume of 400 mᶟ and is supplied by:

  • The fountain – waterfall located under the orange grove
  • A pipe coming directly from the underground veins at the source

When it overflows the, the pool sends waterfalls cascading down the French gardens. The central work of the “flower bed” combines circular basins, water jets and waterfalls on the pyramidal dome. Note also, the basin in half-moon, below the collection reservoir.

The Tower of ‘’Bonne Garde’’
Uncertain of the date but probably part of the fortresses of old, the Tower of ‘’Bonne Garde’’ contains a remarkable spiral staircase, totaling 6 helical flights and 136 steps. In the foundations of the building, it led to two narrow and deep cellars, the use of which remain a mystery.

In “Bonne garde” of the Lord of the place the question must be asked, Were the stairs the starting point of a traditional underground gallery, where one could escape under the Castle to exit near the river Aygalade? Before heading up to the current floors, the staircase, by a recent opening to the south, allows access to the fish pool level.

A double flight of stairs leads to the courtyard on the ground level, then up to the 1st and 2nd Floor. Rising above the 20m height difference, the staircase heads up to the roof level, leading to the narrow walkway on the outskirts of the Dome.

The remarkable architecture of the hexagonal dome, built of matching stones and topped by a faceted decorative knob. A simple flight of stone steps lead to the top floor of the staircase, the guard’s platform, from where they surveyed the road from Montpellier to Alès.

Gargoyles and cannons
Large stone gargoyles spring from the crowns of each tower. Positioned on the exposed faces, they give the impression of large guns in defense of the Monument.

In fact, their implementation in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries seem to be lacking a reason, it could have been part of a deterrent strategy or a reminder of a glorious warlike past.

They certainly contribute to the overall decoration of the Castle with their motifs of carved ferns and their decorative placing. The Donjon, equipped with a circular walkway, has 8 intimidating cannons defending the castle.

Aliasing and Brattice
The lord of the nineteenth century, Marquis de Montlaur, was motivated by elements of military architrave. The construction of an aliasing at the top of the north wing, and the installation of a brattice, significantly modified the appearance of the facade. Back in the days when the Chateau de Pondres was a stronghold.

The Chapel
Painting on canvas, animated by a deep symbolism carried by the Angels of the Annunciation. A coat of arms recalling the nobility of the owners of the Domaine and a fully-restored altarpiece

Ornamental ceilings
The first floor of the Chateau comprises of fifteen main rooms, staterooms for the most part. The decorated French ceilings in 8 of these rooms are made up of a rigorously ordered network of beams, joists and staves.

The ceilings of the General States Hall, dating back to the 19th century, exalt the Art of Building. The carved decoration of the Reception Hall, dating from the 19th century, have been totally restored.

Fireplaces
Used to dress-up each of the living rooms of the castle. Despite those destroyed by the collapses, those that were stolen, many magnificent works still remain in place.

The monumental stone chimney carved from the General States Hall, bears the inscription “Beatus on est esse se qui non putat” Various works of lesser importance were removed and repositioned decoratively in the rooms of the Castle.

Plasterwork
The plasterwork decoration reproduces the classical models illustrating the Arts and Nature. The instruments in the music room are attributed to Joseph Isidore de Montlaur, a lover of music, Marquis de Montlaur, owner of the Château de Pondres in 1820.
