As soon as you are going up the Salève, you are impressed by the mysterious scenery. Taking the winding road, going along the row of century-old trees while approaching the estate, then seeing the castle standing out against the sky, overlooking the valley.

With the sparkling, majestic Mont Blanc to the East and the blue waters of lake Annecy to the South. The terrace of the Château des Avenières offers a magnificent
view on the alpine mountains! You could spend hours admiring the breathtaking panorama that meets your eyes…

Nestled in unspoilt greenery at more than 1,000 metres above sea level, in the heart of 62 ha of woodland and meadows, the stone colossus watches over the estate and its inhabitants.

Everything here is calm and serenity… Only a handful of kilometres from Switzerland and the cosmopolitan city of Geneva! Welcome to an exceptional place, out of time, in the heart of nature…

At a pink sunrise above Mont Blanc… A fox cub pointing its nose out of its burrow… A doe and its fawn quietly grazing at the edge of the forest… The ballet of bees round their hives, the cackling of hens in the estate, the quivering of ferns and wheat ears rocked by a light morning breeze…

And suddenly, out of nowhere, a majestic silhouette and a shrill squeal spreading in a deep blue sky… A snowy owl takes flight. What do you mean? A Siberian owl here? Really? Nature has a secret. And what a secret…

MARY & ASSAN
Mary married Assan Farid Dina who laid out the gardens and built the chapel in 1917. Assan Dina was poised to become a mainstay of technological and tourist development in the Salève region.

As soon as the Great War came to an end, he financed an electrification programme in the district of Cruseilles and the supply of drinking water to some villages and hamlets.

In 1918, he began to redevelop the old “Jacquet mills” on the river the Usses, in the place known as “Les Chosals”, which he transformed into a hydroelectric power station.

Dina was planning to build an astronomical and meteorological observatory on the Salève, which he wanted to equip with the most powerful telescope ever designed. This project could not be completed, but Dina bought the Vallot observatory in Chamonix in 1925.

Assan died mysteriously on 24 June 1928, while he was celebrating his fifteenth wedding anniversary on a liner in the Red sea. In 1930 Mary married Ernest Britt, a pianist who squandered her fortune. She died in 1938 following an accident, one year after her divorce with Ernest Britt.

The estate was sold to Mr. Guillermin, departmental councillor of Savoy in 1936. Six months later, he put up for auction furniture and some works of art.

JUILLY PRIVATE SCHOOL
In 1942, the estate was let to an organization run by the Swiss Red Cross: “Le Secours suisse aux enfants victimes de guerre.”

In 1949, the non-trading real estate companysold the property to the Oratorians who established in the castle a first-rate private school, the Collège de Juilly, welcoming future important people such as Jean-Jacques Debout, Claude Brasseur, Jacques Mesrine and many others, until 1970.

A CONTROVERSIAL ARCHITECT HAUSERMANN
Allowed by Mr. Duvernay to fall into decay for ten years, the castle was bought by Mr. Hausermann in 1981. He started refurbishing it, but could not finally complete the ambitious and highly controversial urbanization plan he had envisaged.

THE ODIN FAMILY
Taking up the challenge, Nicolas Odin and his family, natives from the Abergement, 3 km below, embarked on the adventure. Caterer by trade, he took control of it. Eager toexpand his business and to increase the value of the property while preserving this exceptional site, he transformed the estate into a hotel-restaurant.

A NEW IMPETUS
Laurence and Nicolas Odin have ensured for 22 years the smooth running of the gourmet restaurant of Les Avenières and, as members of Relais et Châteaux, they have always ardently defended the values of the association.

After this experience of high gastronomy, they decided to turn the page in 2016 to create the M, a new gourmet bistro in line with the “chic and trendy” brasseries which are very popular at the moment.

This concept perfectly illustrates their state of mind and their views on their job. They consider the customer’s satisfaction to be a central issue and the object of all attentions at all times.

Simple, convivial, almost friendly relationships… And the hosts never miss the chance to be deeply involved with their guests when telling them the story of the castle and trying to share with them, the time of a stay or a meal, their passion for this timeless and mysterious place.

ROOMS WITH UNIQUE CHARACTER
As an exceptional place, the Château des Avenières offers stays outside the codes of the traditional hotel industry. Each room in this magnificent residence, with its architecture worthy of the most beautiful fairy tale castles, has its own story to tell.

12 rooms furnished with care to give them the character and personality they deserve. Discover our cocoons with refined style and comfort guaranteed, for a stay filled with emotions. And as each stay is supposed to be a unique experience, you will have the chance to test each of our rooms during your visits!

RESTAURANT THE M
Take a few walls and old woodwork from the Château des Avenières, add a little salt of modernity, a touch of passion for the land, a hint of refinement, all topped with a good dose of friendliness and simplicity and you will get the “M” of the Avenières. A new concept which is meant to be unpretentious and resolutely affordable to everyone, after 20 years of “pure gastronomy”.

The M atmosphere cheerfully plays the register of bistronomy, combining simple and refined country cooking, in a retro-chic 1920s décor with its large cosy wall seats in warm tones in accordance with traditional brasserie design.

Here reigns a spirit of lightness, an energy driven by laughter, exchanges between customers and staff of the gourmet bistro, a friendly and family atmosphere which, we hope, will make you want to come back and share the experience with your loved ones.

GOURMET FOOD AS GENEROUS AS ITS CHEF
The chef of the M of the Avenières, deserves to be looked at for a moment: La Tour d’ Argent, Lucas Carton, La Maison d’ Alsace, l’ Hôtel de Ville de Crissier, does that ring a bell? Anthony gained experience in these prestigious restaurants for more than 15 years and eventually deided to get with it in Annecy area.

He set up there as a caterer in 2014, choosing to put his culinary talents at the service of private individuals. His ambition? Making gastronomy within reach for the greatest number of people.

In 2017, Anthony meets Laurence and Nicolas Odin, owners of the Château des Avenières, which clears the way to a new and attractive project for him: the Domaine des Avenières is looking for a Chef to open a new restaurant in tune with the human and friendly values of land that Anthony has always defended.

It is the beginning of a beautiful venture and we are delighted to invite you to join us, the time of a dinner or a lunch.

PRODUCE GROWN IN THE ESTATE
Our Chef has a talent for enhancing simple and tasty traditional recipes based on ingredients and produce locally grown, and even in our estate for some of them. This is why the Château’s gardener, Étienne Châtel, is one of the key resources of the M!

Early in the morning, near the sunny vegetable garden, Étienne shared his secrets with us… Since 2011, he has been in charge of the Château’s vegetable production.

Ubiquitous in the greenhouse and on the two gardens of the Château, he sows, digs over, hoes, harvests and looks after its rows of fruits, vegetables and herbs for the needs of the restaurant. Thanks to this laborious work, most of the vegetables on your plates come from our estate!

A production completed by honey from our hives and eggs from our hens, housed in a 5-star henhouse near the greenhouses of the Château.
