Cliveden House is a privately owned 5 Red Star award-winning hotel, and sister to the world-renowned Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa in Hampshire. Our story is one of over 350 years of powerful personalities, iconic parties and scandalous affairs. Built in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, as a gift to his mistress, Cliveden House has remained a pinnacle of intrigue and glamour for the elite.

Enriched with antique furniture and period features, it has stayed true to its roots whilst also providing a luxurious setting to rest, meet and play. Now, our Grade I stately home set upon 376 acres of National Trust grounds is a luxurious five-star hotel, ready and waiting to welcome you in.

ESTATE & GARDENS
Sprawling out beyond our five-star country estate lies 376 acres of magnificent Grade I listed formal gardens and woodlands. Standing majestically upon the chalk cliffs which lend the house its name, the house commands panoramic views over the Berkshire countryside.

Owned, managed and lovingly cared for by the National Trust, the gardens feature the celebrated Parterre, season-long floral displays, distinctive topiary and a collection of exceptional sculptures. The finer details:

  • Works of art on the grounds including the Fountain of Love and the Roman sarcophagi
  • The famous Parterre laid out in 1855 by John Fleming
  • The Maze, which opened in 2011 and is perfect for big and little kids alike
  • Woodlands which features a wealth of walks including a Fitness Trail
  • Storybook Play Den or the paddock with goal posts for sport-lovers and families
  • Giant games in the water garden
  • Octagonal temple
  • The Pavilion built to commemorate the Battle of Blenheim
  • Amphitheatre where the first recital of “Rule Britannia” was played.

THE PROFUMO AFFAIR
With a history peppered with intrigue, our Grade I listed stately home’s most infamous scandal shook the British parliament and played out on these very grounds. The year was 1961.

While the Cold War was slowly chilling British politics, Cliveden House was engulfed in a sultry summer of sweltering heat. Cooling off in the now famous outdoor pool, was Christine Keeler, a nineteen year old mistress of a suspected Russian spy.

Attending a hot mid summer’s party hosted by the then owner Lord Astor, the young woman was one of a few exclusive guests enjoying the luxurious celebrations held within Cliveden House’s magnificent gardens. Also in attendance was John Profumo, an up-and-coming Conservative Secretary of State for War and husband of well-known actress, Valerie Hobson.

Profumo and Keeler embarked on an illicit affair following their chance meeting at Cliveden House; an affair which was to force his resignation, irrevocably damage the Prime Minister’s reputation, and impact on the course of British politics forever.

50 years has passed since that fateful meeting which was to alter Britain’s political landscape. Discover the scurrilous secrets of the time with our Profumo Affair Break and find out all about how the political establishment finally thawed out.

THE ASTOR GRILL
Please be advised that the latest sitting available will be 8pm and the restaurant will close at 10pm until further notice, due to the current Government guidelines. Located in the charming old stable block, which once housed Lord Astor’s most prized fillies. Adopting an equestrian theme in its décor, The Astor Grill is full of character offering a simple and informal approach to dining at Cliveden.

The menu is overseen by our Executive Chef and it focusses on a mixture of classic American and British dishes, many reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents. The name – The Astor Grill – recalls the Astor family, who owned the house from the early 1900s.

William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest citizen, then gave the house to his son and daughter-in-law, Nancy Astor, in 1906 and Cliveden became a vibrant social hub for guests as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and Winston Churchill.

The Astor Grill today is a cosmopolitan venue which is steeped in history, its romantic setting offers all the style and legendary hospitality that Cliveden is famous for, and it is the perfect place to escape and enjoy lunch or a relaxed supper.

SPA & WELLNESS
We currently live and work within challenging, fast paced, busy and uncertain times and practising mindfulness enables us to develop a new set of skills to stay steady in the midst of all this.

Mindfulness is a way of training our minds to be in the present moment, through mind body meditation practices, rather than dwelling in the past or being caught up in the future. Over time it becomes a way of life, enabling us how to be more compassionate towards ourselves and others.

YOGA
Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental well-being. So step away from the meeting room and take time for yourself and your team.
