On floor -1 (in the living and reading room) a section of the Fernandina Wall , ordered to be built by King Fernando, in 1373, is preserved.

In fact, there are few places that have such a unique and secular history as this room. During the works for the installation of the Hotel do Corpo Santo, pieces of Lisbon’s history of incalculable importance were discovered.

The archaeological excavations made it possible to expose a set of ruins that take us back to a Medieval Lisbon , in continuous transformation from the 14th to the 21st century.

Thus, it was possible to identify traces of a Lisbon lost in time, formerly the capital of a vast maritime empire, pioneer of globalization, which brought people and cultures together and made known, in Camões’ immortal verses, “new worlds to the world”. ( The Lusiads, Canto II)

In these excavations, pieces from different epochs, from many sources, were discovered, which tell us a history of almost 700 years, and show us how this metropolis, which was Lisbon, was one of the most important cities in the world.

Allied to natural causes such as the ruin caused by the 1755 earthquake and the subsequent reconstruction, they hid this piece of the city’s history, which is now revealed and is once again visible.

The integration and musealization of this unique set undoubtedly contributes to the knowledge of Medieval and Modern Lisbon and its defensive structures, making Corpo Santo Hotel a magical place that leads us on a passionate journey in the memory of Lisbon and the World.

The route starts inside the Hotel, in the Fernandina wall and in the museum space, continuing through the streets of Lisbon.
