Akrotiri
The ancient ruins of Akrotiri is a must-see attraction in Santorini as it offers visitors the opportunity to gain insight into the Minoan civilization, which flourished in the middle Bronze Age on the island.
This impressive archaeological site features ruins from one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean Sea. Akrotiri used to be a thriving port town, which was buried in ash by a devastating volcanic eruption that made the whole island uninhabitable more than 3,500 years ago.
After decades of excavations, archaeologists have managed to uncover a wonderful ancient city frozen in time that will certainly make you gaze in awe.
Ancient Thera
The archaeological site of majestic Ancient Thera lies at the top of a high rocky cliff called Mesa Vouno and is certainly a place not to be missed as it unravels the rich history of the island. Settled by the Dorians in the 9th century BC, Thera was the capital of the island thanks to its naturally fortified location and had commercial ties with all the important urban centres of the time.
It was also one of the first places to adopt the Phoenician alphabet, which played a major role in the evolution of the Greek alphabet. Today, a large part of this ancient settlement has been brought to light, featuring ruins from the Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine period.
People visiting Ancient Thera have the opportunity to learn about the history of the island, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and feel the pulse of this remarkable civilization.
Palea & Nea Kameni
Located in the centre of the basin of Santorini, the striking islets of Palea and Nea Kameni are regarded as the youngest islands in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Formed during the last two millennia by several eruptions of ash and lava, these two small islets are a major pole of attraction for tourists as they are home to hot springs, volcanoes and scenic walking paths.
You can book a volcano boat tour and explore the renowned volcano of Santorini wandering along the rocky sides of the steaming volcano, witnessing incredible lava formations and admiring spectacular views of the Santorini.
