MORE THAN 500 YEARS OLD HISTORIC SPOT
The traditional character of the settlement of Oia is replicated in Fanari Villas. The history is preserved by the present-day patron of the resort, Emmanouil (Manolis) Darzentas, descendant of two historical families: of the Darzentas’ and Barbarigos’ families.

The roots of the Darzentas’ family are to be found in a branch of the Byzantine Argyros’ family. It made its appearance in the mid-9th century AD and as history unfold itself, it finds the D’Argenta family ruling the Castle of St Nicholas of Apanomeria (contemporary Oia) and its surrounding areas.

Since 1372, Nicholas III della Carceri, as Duke of the Archipelago, ceded it to the D’Argenta family. Members of the family also undertook positions as castellans in other regions of Santorini. They distinguished themselves in the nineteenth and twentieth century in the fields of arts, sciences and business.

The roots of the Barbarigos family start from Venice speaking about the Doge Marco Barbarigo (1483) and members of the family were to be found chiefly on Zakynthos and Santorini. Manolis Darzentas studied architecture in the 70’s in Athens.

After few years working in the capital of Greece and because of his love for Oia, he decided to return to his homeland. Still owning big part of his family’s property, he decided to create a resort on the cliff in the beginning of 90’s by restoring some of the remaining ruins of the tremendous earthquake of 1956 and adding few more premises.

The outcome of his work and love is the present resort of Fanari Villas. The origins of the name “Fanari” is the Greek translation of “lighthouse”. An extremely beautiful, stone and marble built lighthouse that was standing in this area and vanished after the earthquake in 1956.

Manolis gave life to whole area with respect to his legacy that is reflected through the one of the main landmarks, the family owned medieval, patriarchal, stavropegic church of 16th century, Ayia Ekaterina (St Catherine) which has remained “intact” down the ages…

This church is located on the top of the complex and dominates the whole area. Fanari Villas, established on 1991, is a traditionally-styled 4-star boutique hotel, with wonderful Cycladic features and a genuine ‘taste’ of Santorini Island.

It is a multi-level complex with steps, as are most places in picturesque Oia. Its location at the northern part of the island offers views such as directly facing island of Thirasia, the dramatic armful of Caldera and its volcano on the left and the open air unobstructed sunset on the right.

The hotel is painted in shades of white and lime green to match the natural setting of Oia. The Santorini-style cave-like suites, with handcrafted wooden furniture, built-in stone-tiled beds and sofas create charming comfortable corners all around the resort.

As the luxury suites are carved into the cliff, they provide natural climate control, keeping a pleasant temperature all year round. The outdoor areas are characterized by curved rooftops, arches and charming terraces that offer a marvelous sea and sunset view.

Part of the hotel’s outdoor swimming pool is carved into a whitewashed arched cavern. Along the stone-paved paths, there are touches of green and pink from the potted plants and bougainvillea flowers tucked away.

SECRET STEPS SUITE
WITH OUTDOOR WHIRLPOOL
Secret Steps Suite is a combination of two suites located on different levels (not interconnected). By definition, profoundly different to anything else you have experienced before, the Secret Steps Suite reflects all that expresses a sophisticated yet traditional quality in its interiors and outdoors.

Guests will have the opportunity to witness the light changing throughout the day providing the perfect atmosphere for family and friends, from its three balconies. A hidden gem located all the way at the bottom level of our hotel that involves many steep steps but is definitely worthy to walk down to.

The Secret Steps Suite can accommodate comfortably up to 7 adults in total (not suitable for children). The top unit for 5 guests features a master bedroom with double bed, a spacious living room area in charming eclectic style with dining area, “look like kitchenette” corner and a big dining table.

Furthermore, it consists of a folding double couch and separated additional single built bed. The cave style bathroom offers a rain shower.

The lower level unit is the best way to accommodate two additional guests in a separate suite, located right below the top unit which offers comfort and traditional style designed in open-plan style having a bedroom with double bed and a small sitting area. The bathroom is also mountain carved with rain shower.

The front patios of both suites blend the best outdoor assets, the top part manifested into the outdoor refreshing whirlpool, outdoor furniture, lounge sofa, sunbeds, private dining area, and the bottom part with outdoor furniture.

Both patios offer a panoramic and unobstructed view of caldera, surrounding islands, volcano, sunset and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. It is located on the lowest level of the Caldera and offers the possibility of walking down to “Ammoudi ‘s” picturesque Port via a trail with numerous steps.

Our unique Sunset Honeymoon Suite in Oia Santorini, is located on the top of the cliff, at the highest level, facing Oia’s Castle and offering some of the most spectacular views of the Caldera and all the Island. It is traditionally designed and decorated, offering guests a “taste” of Santorini ‘s Island lifestyle.

This suite provides guests with roominess and comfort, as well as that extra special touch of style and romanticism to match the occasion. In addition, the suite is decorated with lace bedspreads, candles, flowers and other special features that create a wonderful romantic atmosphere.

The Sunset Honeymoon Suite offers luxury accommodation having separately a main sleeping area with a double bed and a sitting area with a folding double leather couch easy to use for additional guests. HISTORY AFFICIONADO ? DON’T MISS…

Santorini features two of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece: the city of Ancient Thira and the Prehistoric Settlement of Akrotiri.

Ancient Thira is a spectacular archaeological site, situated a short distance from the settlements of Perissa and Kamari. It is comprised of the ruins of an entire city, including an agora, a theater, a, gymnasium, sanctuaries, and other structures.

Akrotiri is an extremely well-preserved ancient site, with houses, storage rooms, a very sophisticated ancient sewage system, staircases, and roads, all of which are in magnificent condition.

The entire settlement was covered in lava when the eruption of the volcano took place in the 17th century B.C. Before visiting Akrotiri, ask the reception desk of Fanari Villas for the opening hours of excavation area.

Of course the visit of the museum can not be neglected : Museum of Prehistoric Thira and Archaeological museum , both in the capital of the island Fira, as well as the Folklore museum Megaron Gyzi, etc.

WHAT TO SEE IN OIA AND SANTORINI

In Oia, we recommend strolling through the charming streets, going to the bay of Ammoudi with its quaint tavernas; and visiting the Oia Castle, Maritime Museum where you can admire the fine artefacts that outline the nautical tradition of Santorini and of course the four hundred years old church of Ayia Ekaterina which remains untouchable even passing through tremendous earthquakes and disasters.

An abundance of lovely churches are located in Oia (Panagia Platsani or Akathistou, Agios Spyridonas, Anastasi, Agios Sostis), as well as in other areas, including Ipapanti of Sotira in Fira, Panagia in Emporeio, Agios Georgios in Imerovigli, Eisodon of Panagia in Megalochori, Theotokaki in Pyrgos, and Panagia of Katefiani in Perissa.

While vacationing in Santorini Greece, don’t forget to visit the small, volcanic islands of Thirassia, Nea and Palea Kammeni, located off the western shore of the island, where you can swim in the thermal baths of the Caldera. From Ammoudi, a traditional boat departs for Thirassia Island, three times a day.

SANTORINI BEACHES…

Relax and have fun in the sun on some of the most unique beaches in Greece. In a cove, at the foot of the cliff where Fanari Villas is located, lies the picturesque pebble and rocky beach of Ammoudi, with its quaint fish tavernas and excellent swimming spot at the island of Aghios Nikolas.

Situated close to Ammoudi is another beautiful cove called Armeni, which is known for its small port and lovely pebble beach. While staying at Fanari Villas, you will have easy access to the beautiful Santorini beaches of Katharos, Baxedes, Paradissos and Koloumbos.

The black sandy beach, which extends along the eastern coast of Santorini, is also a popular place for sunbathers, avid swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

These black sands are located in the coastal settlements of Perissa, Kamari, Monolithos, and Perivolos. The Red Beach and the White Beach near Akrotiri, are also wonderful and offer a stunning Aegean Sea view.

LOCAL CUISINE OF SANTORINI

Like in most areas in Greece, cuisine plays an important role in learning about its culture and history. Centuries of poverty and occupation by enemies combined with the lack of water, the total absense of forests and animals, lead the habidants to discover new sources of proteins.
