The history and legend of Son Net

Legend has it that in the 17th century, the land surrounding Son Net was granted to a pirate turned nobleman by his King as a reward for his valiant service in fending off foreign marauders.

The prestigious estate extended from the mountains just outside of Palma, Mallorca’s capital, to the far side of the island’s North Coast. The knight, Don Francisco de Net, searched his vast estate for the optimum location upon which to build his family mansion.

He chose a site atop the crest of a prominent hill with commanding views over a tranquil, hidden valley surrounded by majestic mountains, yet close to Palma and the sea.

Net built his mansion to take advantage of the shelter provided by the mountains, the site’s extraordinary views, and the soft Mediterranean breezes that cooled this sundrenched elevated site.

The small medieval village of Puigpunyent at the base of the hill began to thrive while serving the expansive Net estate. And thus, Son Net’s history began. Over the following centuries, the manorial estate passed through the hands of several prominent families as it evolved into one of the most prestigious residential properties on the island.

Then, in the final days of the last century, the mansion and estate were painstakingly transformed into a luxury hotel; Gran Hotel Son Net. Thus, a new legend was born, and every guest who passes through Son Net’s doors becomes a part of our story.

A historic mansion becomes a luxury hotel

Architectural Digest: “With a project like Son Net, the architect has to listen to what the past has to say. Each of the Gran Hotel Son Net’s rooms follows an individual theme, with distinct color combinations and period furnishings.

Several suites are unusually spacious, with vaulted ceilings and private terraces as well as what must be the most luxurious baths in Europe.” At the end of the 20th century, Son Net, with its rich history as a gran residential estate, was transformed and has evolved into an internationally renowned five-star boutique hotel.

The imposing yet elegant exterior facade of the mansion was restored, and the magnificent interior of the building was renovated to assure that an intimate balance between classical Mallorcan tradition and modern contemporary comfort and elegance.

Throughout the renovation and conversion process, while Son Net was seamlessly being retrofitted with the latest features of modern comfort and technology, the mansion’s historic architectural features were restored, and its character preserved.

Original details such as rustic beams, carved wood ceilings, stone archways, antique tile and stone floors, original fireplaces, arched stone ceilings, a family chapel, a centuries-old olive press and a 17th-century interior courtyard with a spring-fed became treasured features of the hotel.

Son Net’s classic architecture and elegant beauty combined seamlessly with its contemporary comforts and services it offers its guests.

A new start

Soon after its opening, Gran Hotel Son Net was recognized by Conde Nast Traveler magazine as one of the 21 best international hotels for the 21st century.

Many prestigious awards followed as did guests from all over the world, including a long list of celebrities as European royalty and Heads of State and icons from the world of music, literature, fashion, business, and sport.

They were joined by Academy Award-winning actresses, actors, producers, and directors, all of whom mixed naturally with other guests who came from a multitude of cultures. All came to Son Net to share the same warm hospitality, comfort, and ambiance of a grand family estate.

The suites and rooms were restored by Mallorcan craftsman using traditional techniques and materials. Each unique room has been individually designed and decorated in a style and color. Every room has its own character and personality while maintaining its link to the traditional method of the building.

Son Net also houses an extensive private art collection that includes artists such as Marc Chagall, Frank Stella, David Hockney, Robert Longo, and Christo. These contemporary artists provide a lively contrast to Son Net’s collection of classical Mallorcan art and antiques.

The Estate and the picturesque village below

Son Net is located within the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, just a short drive from Mallorca’s capital city of Palma.

It is positioned on a hilltop overlooking the picturesque village of Puigpunyent, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and down the valley towards Palma. Access to Son Net is by a long, private, palm tree-lined drive that starts at the base of the hill in the village and rises to the grand circular entry of the hotel.

As in days past, Son Net’s privileged and protected position provides security, exclusivity, and privacy to those within its walls and grounds.

The quaint village below, built around a historic 13th-century church, is surrounded by vintage farms and vineyards. While only 20 minutes from Palma, the town offers its own amenities such as supermarkets, bakeries, bars, restaurants, and cafes. On Saturday there is a traditional open-air market in the village square.

Also within the village there is an extensive Nature Reserve with waterfalls, wild birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks. There you can enjoy a leisurely walk through wooded trails or the challenge of Mallorca’s longest zip line.

Within the same 20 minutes’ drive you can reach marinas offering all kinds of watersports nautical activities, golf courses, tennis centers, and other sporting venues as well as Palma’s International Airport. Son Net’s treehouse, a first for Mallorca, is built around an ancient tree adjacent to Oleum restaurant’s terrace. The treehouse offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a private “birdseye view” of the village and countryside below and the mountains beyond.

It is available for exclusive use for up to ten guests for any number of purposes, from full dining experiences to champagne and caviar celebrations. In 2012 Son Net planted a vineyard of Malvasia, a traditional Mallorcan grape. The vineyard produces excellent ecological wine.

Also, using ecological farming methods, the hotel’s kitchen garden and orchard produce fresh products for the kitchen. Farm animals have also been re-introduced. Sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, ponies, and white Mallorcan donkeys now roam the land below the hotel’s formal gardens.

It has a master bedroom with a queen size bed, direct access to the pool, a separate sitting room and a marble bathroom with a walk-in shower. This exclusive enclave offers wonderful views of Tramuntana mountains. It can also be transformed into a two-bedroom suite with the addition of an adjourning bedroom.

Royal Suite
Our Royal suites are the true jewels of Gran Hotel Son Net. These apartment size suites are located in the western part of the hotel on the ground, first or second floor. They have a separate living area and bedroom; spacious private terrace or garden providing opulent seclusion in their own personal retreats within the hotel.

Presidential Suite
Without any doubt, the Presidential suite is the most impressive room of Gran Hotel Son Net. This 150 sqm room features a separate living room and bedroom and a magnificent large marble bathroom. The main bedroom offers 2 queen sized poster beds.

A bit of history behind the Son Net private vineyard and wine collection
In 2012 we started an ambitious project at Gran Hotel Son Net regarding the fascinating world of wine. Within the premises and next to our hotel, we planted a vineyard of white Malvasia grape, the traditional Mallorcan grape, which covers a half-hectare.

So our guests can experience our selection of local Son Net wines, we host wine tasting events either in our beautiful chimney bar at the hotel or in the splendid Pérgola area right in the middle of the vineyard.

Cycling

Mallorca is widely regarded as a cyclists’ paradise, and with good reason. With its year-round warm, sunny climate with 300 days of sunshine, long mid-gradient climbs and well-maintained roads relatively free of traffic, it is a clear top destination worldwide.

And don’t forget that for those who want to take it easier, we also offer e- bike options! For a small island, Mallorca is really diverse in the countryside it has to offer: there are rolling low hills, a pan-flat plain, and a mountain range of perfect proportions (high enough to excite the adventurous, not so high as to be closed to snow).

These elements are mixed beautifully in one island: there’s enough of each so that you can have a day on the plain, or a day purely in the mountains, and so on; but they are also arranged close together so that you can mix all three in one day’s riding every day.

Hiking

Mallorca, one of the most important tourist destinations on the Mediterranean, has a very attractive and well-preserved rural areas and an extensive network of trails. And the majority of them pass through Serra de Tramuntana, right where Son Net is located.

The majority of the trails pass through the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, the most emblematic nature reserve on the island, crossing crags, cliffs and waterfalls, following gravel paths or goat trails.

In the Serra de Tramuntana, there are mountains that rise from 0 m to 1,436 m in just a few kilometers, and almost all of the peaks are accessible, thanks to the roads leading to snow wells.

The rest of the island also has a significant network of trails that run along gentler contours than those of the Serra de Tramuntana, but which possess a surprisingly rich ethnological and cultural charm.

While hiking on Mallorca, one can discover places of fabulous beauty full of history and ancient legends. Roads originally created by smugglers that lead to the remotest spots on the coast, coastal watchtowers built in the 16th century to protect from Turkish pirate attacks, “marges” (stone terrace walls) and infrastructures used for farming and collecting water that have lasted since the Arab period

The hotel, surrounded by 5 hectares, aims to purposely grant you the unique feeling of experiencing luxury among an old estate with a direct contact of nature.

In order to fulfill this goal, we bring to our property an organic garden, vineyards, majestic and millennial olive trees and the most iconic and representative animals of the island; sheep, ponies and donkeys along with chickens, ducks and geese.
