THE HISTORY
It was 1940 and I was 20 years old. It was a beautiful evening in autumn and I was walking along the road that from Praiano leads to Positano, with my brother in law Andrea, when I stopped at the point where the Tritone Hotel would eventually rise.

We both looked down the mountain out to sea and all we could observe were bushes and trees, but lit by the evening sun looked mesmerizing.

The view was delightfully comforting and whilst we looked out in silence I said to Andrea: “It would be a dream come true to build something right here, in this very spot”. My brother in law just nodded his head not saying a single word.

1957 – first steps
I went to see the owner of the mountain, Lady Raffaella De Luise to enquire if she would be interested in selling a part of it. The lovely lady who had always liked me didn’t hesitate for a second and we bought a strip of the mountain for 1 million Lire.

The thing that shocked yet motivated me the most was how encouraging and positive Lady Raffaella was towards me. We bought the land from the lovely lady (where the swimming pool now is), the following year.

1958 – my dream starts to take shape
It was August 1958. It was a fantastic month with lots of people. The Hotel still needed a few finishing touches but my wife Anna and I couldn’t wait to open, even if we still had people working in a few of the rooms, we needed to start making some money.

We started with an outside and an inside dining room, the kitchens and 27 rooms, we knew we were only at the beginning as our dream was to have a much bigger hotel.

1970 – the impossible staircase
The staircase was made without any planning because what we had in mind was hard to put into writing. To be honest, it was considered impossible. I knew that to make it happen I would have to direct the builders myself and in that way, we started building, one step at a time.

When we finally arrived at sea level the satisfaction was so overwhelming that I built the last step myself.

1980 – diving into the pool
The big swimming pool was 15 metres long and more than 7 metres deep. In those days the depuration systems we have today didn’t exist, and to change the water and clean the pool would take more than 36 hours, a real task.

Around the pool area we managed to build another 11 rooms all with one thing in common, they were dug into the mountain.

FRAGMENTS OF PARADISE
Some areas of The Grand Hotel Tritone really are unique. Take for example the Limonaia, a peaceful place where our guests can take a pleasant stroll and enjoy the fragrances of local citrus fruits that are characteristic to many terraces on the Amalfi Coast.

A little further down the pathway is the Uliveto, equipped with comfortable benches where you can sit and read, enjoy a drink or simply relax and take in the view. You can also book a massage in the Uliveto for a truly regenerating experience.

Right above the sea on the mountain’s peak is the “Belvedere del Professore”, an extraordinary breathtaking spot that can be reserved for a romantic candlelit dinner where you can admire the stars meet the horizon. Numerous wedding proposals have taken place here.

You can go for a swim near the natural arch. The excursion will then carry on to Amalfi, Atrani and Minori returning to the beach club at the hotel later on in the day.

THE PATH OF THE GODS
The path of the gods allows us to go back in time to the era of the ancient Greeks. The trek can start from the centre of Praiano and goes upwards towards the convent of San Domenico, crossing Nocelle and carrying on through the antique pathway of the Hellenic colonists, once dominated by temples until Positano.

This fascinating location has inspired lots of poets and writers. Italo Calvino described the path of the gods as a pathway suspended in mid-air on the magic golf of the “mermaids” furrowed to this day from the memory of the myth. It is with this quotation, impressed in ceramic that the pathway, a proud monument of the coast, starts.

The path of the gods hasn’t been touched by man, no one has dared profane the beauty of the location, not even the weather has been able to corrode the rocks that jealously guard the history of the people that once lived there.

The more sensitive souls can let themselves be transported and imagine themselves being in the era of the ancient Greeks. Imagine hearing the ship Ulysses sailed on reach the splendid waters of the Tyrrhenian sea.

Only the odour of the plants and vegetation could bring you back to the present.

THE WINE TOUR
Try our wine and savour the authenticity of an extraordinary territory. The divine coast offers patches of fertile land that have miraculously allowed the passion and love for viticulture be passed on, generation after generation.

You can try fresh whites and lively reds all transmitting flavours and perfumes of the Amalfi Coast. Vineyards and gardens, terraces and pergolas, hills and valleys that slope into the sea.

Vertigo of panoramas immersed in a surreal fable of sunlight, sea and passion. Excursions to the best wine producers of the area are available to fully emerge yourself into the life of art, passion and poetry.

THE LEMON TOUR
The Amalfi Coast from above the mountains, images you have only ever seen in photos.Imagine walking on the terraces that, through the centuries have endured excruciating work from local farmers, characterising and modelling the scenery making it unique, just like the Sfusato Amalfitano.

The Amalfitan lemon. One of the most prestigious in the world arrived here from the Orient centuries ago and is now recognised by the protected Europe Geographical Indication. Feel the breeze on your skin and the shade of the lemon gardens protect you from the beating Mediterranean sun.

During the tour, you will discover the phases of the production line: from lemon cultivation to the production of all the wonders we produce, of which the main ingredient is the Sfusato Amalfitano.

In this fascinating journey, you will meet locals that love and admire our wonderful territory, day after day. Strolling in the lemon gardens of the Amalfi Coast you will be able to admire the farmers at work and visit their laboratories, discovering the secrets of our typical products, from limoncello to marmalades. An emotional day full of tasty treats and rich perfumes.

The village of Torre Lungo is where the path of lemons is hidden and is one of the most fascinating places on the Amalfi Coast, kissed by the sun in a panoramic location on the promontory that divides the two villages of Maiori and Minori.

If for a second, we decide to go off route and descend to their beaches we’ll discover a place where times slows down and we are submerged by the odours and rocks that suggest how life once was.

The antique road that connects Maiori and Minori was one of the busiest on the Amalfi Coast thanks to the cultivation of lemons.

At the peak of the pathway is where the intensity and quality of the lemons increase, old documents of the 17th century remind us, that the lemons and limoncelli are the most prestigious and abundant fruit of this territory.

The path of the lemons will allow you to observe first hand, the traditions and history that our lemon gardens have given us, giving you the opportunity to see how much hard work and sweat goes into creating the Sfusato Amalfitano.
