The history of the Belles Rives begins with a discovery: the ‘Lost Generation’, composed of a disenchanted youth and artists broken by the First World War, heads to the South of France and invents the Côte d’Azur.

Heading up the American trend for between-the-wars literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, pack their bags in 1925 for the French Riviera and succumb to the charm of a dwelling called the « Villa Saint-Louis » in a cove on the Cap d’ Antibes.

It’s here that he writes his masterpiece, ‘Tender is The Night’, transforming Villa Saint Louis into a resort for wealthy Americans discovering the pleasures of wild partying and swimming in the sea.

His time spent on the Riviera provides him with the inspiration several years later for ‘The Great Gatsby’, in which one imagines the extravagant couple throwing many parties on a terrace by the sea with celebrities such as Rudolph Valentino, Hemingway, Franck Jay Gould, Maurice Chevalier and Pablo Picasso, and where a green light always shines on the horizon…

A life lived at night, with Champagne, extravagance, sweet decadence…and the Fitzgeralds make Juan les Pins the place to be, in vogue, where the jet-set of the era like to slum it while cultivating a certain idea of modernity. It’s in 1929 that the villa, seeped in history, becomes the Belles Rives hotel.

At the same time, a thousand miles from the Mediterranean, Boma Estène breaks with his native Russia and goes off to discover the ‘City of Light’, Paris, and then Antibes, making his life-long dreams come true.

In 1929, accompanied by his wife, Simone, the daughter a of long-line of hoteliers from Antibes, Boma Estène takes over from the Fitzgeralds and metamorphoses the Villa Saint-Louis into a seaside resort.

The Belles Rives, the first hotel on the water along the Côte d’Azur, is born. In 1930 and 1931, Boma and Simone Estène add a wing and two floors to the building which boasts 42 rooms at the time.

Their marriage is blessed with three children, Georges, Raïna-Laure (Laurette) and Casimir. In 1970, following the death of Boma, Casimir Estène takes over the management of the hotel alongside his mother, and then runs it himself – masterfully.

In 2001, Marianne Estène-Chauvin, Boma and Simone’s granddaughter, buys out the Belles Rives from the other members of the family. In 2006, she buys the hotel Juana, another jewel in Juan les Pins, and creates the Belles Rives Group.

LA PASSAGÈRE RESTAURANT
Tucked away on Cap d’Antibes in the quaint town of Juan les Pins, Hôtel Belles Rives’ restaurant pays homage to its location with a focus on local seafood.

Designer Olivier Antoine, known for his work at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, redesigned the space to include contemporary pieces that speak to the restaurant’s sophisticated, imaginative and airy setting while conserving its Art Deco roots.

A Carrara white marble floor with a vibrant mosaic center ushers guests into the main entrance. Magnificent chandeliers illuminate the room filled with art from the 1930’s and hand-painted Bernardaud porcelain plates, featuring scenes from the hotel’s surroundings.

Colorful hand-blown glass created by artisans from the nearby city of Biot enhance the warmth of the space, while ceramic rosettes and oversized mirror panels hang from the ceiling, allowing bright colors to ricochet and reflect throughout.

Additional design features include a mix of green and blue fabric benches, custom Ruhlmann chairs covered with celadon leather, tall white pillars with intricate hand-painted designs and oversized windows.

At the beginning of the thirties, water skiing became a new and very popular sport for the elite few who came to the Côte d’Azur. The Belles Rives Ski Nautique is today one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, with lessons starting from the age of three.

WATER SKI
In 1932, Leo Roman and Emil Petersen ( associated with Major Howard ) contribute to the development of the water-ski by creating the first Water-Ski Club and making incredible demonstrations in the Golfe Juan bay.

At the beginning, they used very heavy snow skis. It was immediately a success and they did the same in Cannes and Nice. As it was really fashionable, people like Errol Flynn and David Niven, in Monaco, said that they were themselves the inventors of the water-ski…

The Juan-les-Pins Water-Ski Club was sponsored by the American millionaire Frank Jay Gould; Florence, his famous wife, was the Water-Ski Club President. The first fabric which realize water-skis was called ‘Toche & Lahupe ’, and was situated between Juan-les-Pins and Golfe-Juan.

The first worldwide water-ski champion ship happened in 1949 in the Juan-les-Pins bay, in the historic channel of the hotels Provençal and Belles Rives ; the champions were French : Peter Goin, Pierre Jourdan-Gassin, Madeleine Bouteiller.

From 1950 to 1960, all the competitions were dominated by the Water-Ski Club of Juan-les-Pins : Maxime Vazeille, Christian Malinet, Jean Jacques Pottier and Philippe Logut. All these episodes explained why Juan-les-Pins is internationally known as the birthplace of the water-skiing.
