In the Sanremo hinterland, San Romolo Natural Park – Monte Bignone offers perfect mountain bike trails. The spring climate, twelve months a year, allows excursions on flower-covered hills in every season.

SANREMO CASINO
In the heart of Sanremo, near the Hotel de Paris, just 2 minutes walk away, stands the Casino, an impressive Liberty style building. The Casino of Sanremo is one of the 4 casinos in Italy and, inaugurated in 1905, boasts of being the oldest in Italy. In the Belle Époque it constituted the place to spend days among various parties for the rich guests, especially foreigners.

The old Salone delle Feste has been remodelled to house the slot machines, while on the first floor there are the rooms dedicated to traditional French and American games, where you can relive the emotions of the great figures who attended  Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo, Vittorio De Sica, King Gustav of Sweden, King Leopold of Belgium, the Ranieri Princes and Grace of Monaco and King Faruq of Egypt.

ARISTON THEATRE
“There are places in the world where feelings are mysteriously multiplied by those which have already passed through in the same place”, according to the writer Cees Nooteboom.

The description seems made for the Ariston Theatre of Sanremo, inaugurated in 1963, which owes its fame especially to the Italian Song Festival. Think of the green room, located just below the stage, where the singers in the contest await their turn to perform.

The main hall, from which the Festival is broadcast, includes 1909 seats amongst the stalls, gallery and side boxes; the stage is 15 metres deep and 24 metres high; the orchestra with up to 100 members; and the ceiling is adorned with the valuable frescoes by the painter Carlo Cuneo.

The Ariston Tour is a guided tour to discover the over 30 dressing rooms, followed by a make-up room, tailor shop and machine room, the latter fundamental for the operation of the lights, and audio and simultaneous translations in the case of foreign super guests.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
The Russian Orthodox church, built in the 1910s, is another symbol of Sanremo: it was commissioned by the Russian community, present in Sanremo thanks to the arrival of the Czarina Maria Alexandrovna, who stayed there in 1874 and gave the city the palm trees on Corso Imperatrice, dedicated to her.

Pietro Agosti, the designer who also built the Hotel de Paris, was inspired by the church of SaInt Basil in Moscow. The eccentric style triumphs: the characteristic five bulb-shaped domes and the large spire are all covered with majolica.

Inside, until 1989, were the tombs of Nicholas I of Montenegro and his wife Milena, parents of Queen Helena of Savoy. Now the bodies have been transferred to Montenegro.

PASSEGGIATA IMPERATRICE
Corso Imperatrice owes its name to the Empress of Russia Maria Alexandrovna who, in 1874, after having stayed in Sanremo, donated the palms still present along this splendid promenade that runs along the sea.

Overlooking the beaches, with its row of majestic palm trees, Corso Imperatrice allows you to stroll through one of the most elegant and evocative settings of Sanremo, enjoying the sea and the Liberty style of the buildings.

PIAZZA BRESCA
A few steps from the old port of Sanremo, right in the centre, we find Piazza Bresca, with its characteristic palm trees and orange trees. The location near the port is particularly favourable for restaurants in the area that are stocked with fresh fish every morning: lovers of good food will find the ideal stop to taste seafood specialities in the restaurants of Piazza Bresca.

Initially named Piazza dei Missionari, in memory of a small community residing there with a church and convent, it was later dedicated to the Bresca family, famous for having won the supply of palm trees to the Vatican on the occasion of the annual liturgical feast preceding Easter.

Legend has it that Captain Bresca proved to be fundamental in the success of raising the great Egyptian obelisk in St. Peter’s Square and for this he was rewarded by Pope Sixtus V.

PORTOSOLE
The Tourist Port of Portosole, just 10 minutes from the Hotel de Paris Sanremo, with 806 berths has become a reference point for national and international boating.

The structure accommodates various businesses, in particular two important shipyards, a mechanics workshop, a brokerage centre, nautical agencies, ships chandlers, qualified points for on-board electronics, nautical upholstery and a specialized boat laundry: all qualifying aspects for recreational boating tourism.

In Portosole there is the operational centre of the Tethys institute, an association that deals with the study of Mediterranean cetaceans. Finally, a weather centre, the only one on the Riviera, gives maximum prestige to the tourist port.

SHOPPING IN SANREMO
The lively and pulsing heart of Sanremo has always been Via Matteotti since the time of the Belle Époque when, with the name of Via Vittorio (in honour of the first king of Italy), it was the centre of the commercial life of the city.

Via Matteotti, just a few minutes from the Hotel de Paris, is a completely pedestrianized street that houses the most beautiful clothing, accessories and jewellery stores, perfumeries, bars…

In addition to the wonderful shops Via Matteotti hosts two cinemas, the Central cinema and the Ariston Theatre, immediately after which the promenade begins with the plaques with the songs and winners of the Sanremo Festival from 1951 to 2017. At the intersection with Via Escoffier we find also the statue of Mike Bongiorno, the historic presenter who presided over 11 editions.

BEACH
The hotel offers its guests a beach umbrella and two sunbeds at the private beach*, with every comfort and only 700 m from the hotel, accessible from the hotel in 10 minutes walk along the promenade.

CETACEAN SANCTUARY
The Cetacean Sanctuary is a protected marine area that includes the stretch of sea between France and Italy, established in Italy by the Ministry of the Environment and Territory Protection as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest.

Off the coast of Sanremo and Liguria it is possible to spot whales, dolphins and turtles of the Mediterranean by taking part in daily excursions departing from the Port of Sanremo.

Whale Watching is a unique and exciting experience that allows you to approach the great cetaceans in their natural habitat: the Ligurian Sea is home to as many as 21 different species of cetaceans!

YACHT CLUB SANREMO
One of the most renowned structures on the international scene regarding the sport of sailing is the Sanremo Yacht Club, born in 1956 from the reconstitution of the ancient Compagnia della Vela. (Sailing Company) It is located on the North Pier of Porto Vecchio, the beating heart of the city of flowers.

In addition to World, European and Italian Championships and events such as the prestigious Giraglia, a sailing regatta with departure from Sanremo and arrival in Saint Tropez (perhaps one of the most known and appreciated of the old continent), the Yacht Club Sanremo also organizes competitive sailing courses, summer and sailing college.

GOLF
Castellaro Golf Resort is located a few km from Sanremo and near the Hotel de Paris, immersed in the greenery of one of the most evocative settings of western Ligurian.

Experience the thrill of playing golf on the 9-hole par 34 scenic course, a total development of 2500 metres, surrounded by a climate that makes this sport practicable all year round. The driving range is accessible at any time of the day, thanks to night lighting.

Castellaro Golf Resort is the ideal place to satisfy both the soul of the purest golfer, and that of those who love to stay in touch with the most unspoiled nature. Here the difficulties caused by the undulation of the terrain, by the rather narrow fairways and by the presence of the wind are mitigated by the panoramic views – from the back tee of hole 9 you can see the sea.

It starts with an easy par 3, 120 metres, where the very large green is defended by a couple of bunkers on the right. The final is a grand finale with a more “technical” conclusion on the long par 5, 500 metres, of the 9th hole: the landing area is quite narrow and also the second shot, because of the body of water that separates the hole from the driving range it is not easy.

But once you get to the bottom, the satisfaction of the commitment and the energies expended will have the most total relaxation as reward.

THE HISTORY OF THE HOTEL
It was in 1897 when the Hotel Parigi appeared in San Remo, or rather the Hotel de Paris, as can be read on the old sign visible in photos of the period yellowed by time: it immediately became one of the most prestigious hotels in Sanremo, magnificent testimony to the Belle Epoque of European tourism on the Riviera at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Built in 1897, the Hotel de Paris was the first work of the civil engineer Pietro Agosti, a charismatic figure and absolute protagonist of the building renovation of Sanremo and its history in those years. The structure of the hotel de Paris was sober and linear, and it already showed the style, taste and great abilities of the architect Agosti.

The hotel was born as a large four-star establishment with restaurant, a building of noble majesty in pure Liberty style that, due to its location and beauty, became a place frequented by the rich and select Italian and above all foreign clientele that for several years now had been coming to stay in Sanremo.

The Hotel de Paris faced the beach and the sea and was in fact right on the Corso dell’Imperatrice, a beautiful public park full of palm trees and flowers. In 1904 Pietro Agosti oversaw the expansion of the right part of the ground floor, to enlarge the restaurant that was now in great demand, a sign of the growing success of the structure.

To take a short step forward in the history of hotel changes, we arrive in 1936 when the doubling of the Corso dell’imperatrice made a change to the building necessary. In fact, the outer part of the restaurant was reduced in size and the original access staircase reduced, with the consequent creation of the diagonal staircase which still exists.

LThe long history of the hotel, which is intertwined with that of the city, makes us reflect on how many mysteries its walls can reveal. Few places are as full of emotions as a great and fascinating historic hotel, which sees thousands of lives intertwined every year.

Mr. Fernando Marro, the owner of the Hotel de Paris in the 1950s, preserves a curious historical find. Making some renovations he discovered some newspaper sheets inside a hole inside a wall.

The oldest newspaper is as old as the Hotel de Paris, and is an original copy dated November 7, 1897. According to an ancient custom a builder wanted to leave a message, emphasizing that present with a symbolic act: today we are here, this is my newspaper, this is today’s Hotel de Paris, also created with our hands.

The second copy is even more striking, because it is like moving the crank handle of a time machine. We arrive at 24th June 1918. The newspaper is Corriere della Sera. “Only” 21 years have passed since the first newspaper, but in the meanwhile there has been a world war, with destruction and millions of deaths all over Europe.

The first page of the newspaper is unmistakable in its title: “From the Supreme Command: From Montello to the sea the enemy, defeated and chased by our valiant troops, disrupts the Piave again. Diaz “

Precisely in the niche that contained the first newspaper, a hand, perhaps the same one as 21 years earlier, also hid the copy of Corriere della Sera, probably on the occasion of further work, closing these pages full of history behind a wall.

In Sanremo, before the world wars, the characters and the elite of countries who would fight to the death found themselves in the casino halls and in the streets, making friends and participating together at parties and banquets.

Even then communication was essential: in a city now full of high-end hotels it was essential to promote and publicize. Brochures were created and always in multiple languages even when, in the fascist period, the name of the hotel had been “Italianized” to the Hotel Parigi first and Hotel del Corso later.

In 1913, the Hotel de Paris appeared with its own advertising in a very important and well-followed guide, the Riviera Guide. Annuaire Complet published under the management of Giacomo Gandolfi, Sanremo, Corso umbert I.

We restart the time machine and make a leap forward of about 15 years, during which Sanremo had consolidated its reputation as a pearl of elite tourism, in Italy and in Europe.

Still with regard to magazines, it is with some emotion that we pick up some original copies of “San Remo au Pays du Soleil”, the country of the sun, with the subtitle of “Liste Gènèrale Officielle des Etrangers.” (“General Official List of Foreigners”).

We are between the two wars (in 1930), apparently still far from the new global upheaval that this time will also touch Sanremo, bombed several times during the Second World War with civilian victims and serious damage to its building and architectural heritage. An extraordinary list of guests, foreigners and Italians that confirms the international climate of previous years.

Meanwhile the years passed. World War II is approaching and there is a sort of limbo, trying to live events and carefree moments again despite the serious European tensions. On 25th July 1937 a guest of the hotel would have been able to attend the First Sanremo Grand Prix by looking out from one of the balconies.

In the second postwar period the Hotel de Paris was still a first-class hotel. Meanwhile, tourism in the 50s and 60s was transforming and began to be very different from that of the very particular period experienced by Sanremo, a destination for international tourism in an era during which very few people travelled for pleasure.

To respond to new demands, it undertook new promotional activities, such as the Sanremo Festival, which would bring the name of the city of flowers all around the world, exporting other emotions and other feelings to an increasingly large audience.

The Hotel de Paris hosted many famous people who left their indelible mark in the “Visitor’s Book”. The list of illustrious guests is truly remarkable. We recall S: A: R: Ferdinand of Savoy and the Duchess of Genoa, the then Hon.

Sandro Pertini, Prince Pietro Bruno of Belmonte, Prince Odescalchi and Comm. Giorgio Pirelli. The location and the panorama the Hotel de Paris offered (and offers!) made it an ideal setting for writers, like Bonaventura Tecchi who claimed to have written extensively from his room overlooking the sea.

Of course, to retrace in a few lines a hundred years of history of a building like the Hotel de Paris, proposing a succession of images and thoughts filled with emotions. The wonderful aura that Pietro Agosti infused into the building, that of a splendid holiday resort in which to live the holiday in one of the most beautiful places in the world, remains indelible.
