BORROMEAN ISLANDS
Lake Maggiore is a place where relaxation and tranquillity find their most profound expression. For those planning a holiday on Lake Maggiore, we strongly recommend a tour of the Borromean Islands, of Isola Madre and Isola Bella, without forgetting the stunning Isola dei Pescatori.

Each island has its own story and features, and together they are one of the lake’s real jewels – because of both their unspoiled nature and their incomparable histories. Isola Madre is the largest and most unique of the islands. The Borromean Palace is magnificently furnished and its English-style garden is rich in exotic flowers and birds.

Isola Bella also offers enchanting splendour thanks to its impressive dwelling and well-cared for gardens. Isola dei Pescatori is the smallest of the islands, and is home to a fascinating hamlet full of restaurants and characteristic alleyways.

SACRO MONTE DI GHIFFA
Sacro Monte di Ghiffa (or Sacro Monte della Santa Trinità) is included in the Alpine ‘Sacri Monti’, or ‘Sacred Mountains’, added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2003.

Within the Ghiffa reserve, which sits like a jewel in the landscape between the lake and the woods, visitors can find the monumental baroque complex of Sacro Monte, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, which includes a sanctuary, three chapels, and the Via Crucis portico.

A site of ancient popular devotion, the current Sacro Monte di Ghiffa seems to be part of a wider and more complicated project that was never brought to completion, and which was originally supposed to depict episodes from the Old and New Testament. The complex consists of 3 chapels.

CANNOBIO
Situated on the north-western coast of Lake Maggiore, Cabbonio is the first town in Piedmont that is encountered from those travelling from Switzerland. Don’t miss the natural spectacle of the S. Anna gorge, formed by the erosive action of the waters of the Cannobio torrent.

MOTTARONE
Montarrone is located between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, between the province of Verbania and that of Novara. From its peak, the view extends from the Maritime Alps to Monviso, from the nearest Monte Rosa massif to the Swiss Alps, and as far as the Po Valley.

From here, the view becomes lost in infinity: with a clear sky, you can see from the Maritime Alps to Monviso, from the nearest Monte Rosa massif to the Swiss Alps, and as far as the Po Valley.  Biking, hiking, paragliding, climbing in summer and snowshoeing in winter are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed in the Mottarone Park.

Woods and paths offer the perfect natural gym, offering opportunities for sport right in the vicinity of the green mountainous landscape. Whether on two wheels, suspended from a carabiner, or on skis – enjoy a breath-taking view, far from the frenzy of the city. How do you get up there? With the picturesque funicular!

LAKE ORTA
Lake Orta, which is regarded as the smaller and calmer cousin of the majestic Lake Maggiore, is a true gem nestled in the green landscape of the Alps and the woodlands of Piedmont. The shores of the lake are full of picturesque little villages, historic hamlets and marinas that document the lives of fishermen, who were once the most numerous inhabitants of Lake Orta.

VILLA TARANTO
The most beautiful garden in the world is here in Italy: Villa Taranto in Verbania. In the gardens of Villa Taranto, visitors can find around 1,000 non-native plants and 20,000 varieties
and species of particular botanical significance. The park is open to the public from April until the end of October, and receives more than 150,000 visitors each year.

The botanical gardens of Villa Taranto are located on the western side of Lake Maggiore, in Pallanza. Villa Taranto can also be reached from the lake: Navigazione Lago Maggiore has a berth in front of the entrance to the gardens.

STRESA
The stunning town of Stresa is one of the most beautiful and frequently-visited tourist locations in northern Italy and on Lake Maggiore. Stresa is located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in Piedmont.

This enchanting lake-side hamlet has around five thousand inhabitants and is set within a unique landscape: Stresa offers excellent views of the Alps and the whole commune overlooks Lake Maggiore, which is home to the celebrated Borromean Islands.

The lakeside, which is perfect for a relaxing stroll, is flanked by historic dwellings and luxurious hotels in a Liberty style, set within a green landscape. Meeting points in Stresa include Piazza dell’Imbarcadero and Piazza Marconi, both of which are lively and bustling.

SHOPPING IN MILAN
Milan is Italy’s fashion capital! It can be conveniently reached by train from Verbania, allowing you to enjoy a day of shopping and fun. Its shopping streets can be divided into those where you can visit luxury boutiques, and those that are home to low-cost shops, making them more affordable in terms of prices. Among Milan’s shopping streets we can’t fail to mention Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni, and Corso Como.
