Hotel Riviera & Maximilian

One day of 1855. While observing the steep and wild promontory over the Grignano bay, so tangled and thick that in some parts it became almost impenetrable, Maximilian of Habsburg, Imperial Prince and Archduke of Austria, future Emperor of Mexico, can already see something unique ahead.

He buys the land, knowing that the castle he will have built will make history. One day of 1992. While observing that hotel over the Grignano bay, Gilberto Benvenuti, Venetian, sees ahead. He knows that that Hotel, the Riviera, with some work done on it “à la Benvenuti”, will become something unique.

“This is the story. We inherited Gilberto’s unique style and passion. It continues growing, and we grow along with it every day, in everything we do”. Hedy, Alex and Susy. These are the Benvenutis that will welcome you today with family warmth and style at the Riviera & Maximilian’s.

PIAZZA UNITA’ D’ITALIA
The largest square facing the sea in Europe. When you arrive in Trieste by sea, the city seems to welcome you with open arms. The creation of the square was the final show of power, strength and solidity of a great empire that was drawing to an end.

It brings to mind the final act of a theatre performance, with a line-up of all of the leading players that made the city great: the Art Nouveau government building, the Assicurazioni Generali building and the Lloyd Triestino building, cornerstones of the commercial hub, and City Hall, which was the last to be built.

In the past, the old marina was located here – the blue lights on the pavement of the square indicate the former water’s edge. In addition, the square was closed off from the sea by a building that was located along the shore.

Over its history, it has often been the setting for events that shaped the destiny of the inhabitants of the city and beyond. Examples of just a few such events from the twentieth century follow.

On 2 July 1914, the boat decorated for mourning that transported the remains of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie landed at the quayside of this square, marking the end of a world.

On 3 November 1918, crowds of residents joyously awaited the beginning of a new chapter in the city’s history, with the arrival of the destroyer Audace and the birth of a new Italy.

In this same square, on 18 September 1938, Mussolini’s terrible words announced the enactment of the Racial Laws from a stage built for the occasion. The speech was transmitted by radio to squares throughout Italy and beyond.

In memory of this sad day, the city erected a bronze commemorative plaque on 18 September 2013. Finally, on 26 October 1954, crowds cheered the arrival of Italian troops once again.

Merchants, sailors, intellectuals, tourists and crowned heads of state have landed in this beautiful square – it is not by chance that the residents affectionately call it the city’s front parlour. It was and is a square for receiving guests!

Today, as in the past, people meet in the square to drink a coffee at the bar on a Sunday morning or enjoy an aperitif while watching the sunset. It is also here that children take their first steps, ride bicycles and chase after each other.

MIRAMARE CASTLE
The Strada Costiera (Coastal Road) from Duino village is the most scenic route to Trieste, passing by Miramare Castle. This majestic white castle, the beloved home of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg (brother of Emperor Franz Joseph), overlooks the sea and is surrounded by a huge park full of rare and exotic tree species collected by the Archduke himself in his scientific expeditions around the world aboard the frigate Novara.

The Castle was built for Maximilian, who fell in love with the view of the small bay and decided to build his home here, where he lived with his wife Charlotte of Belgium.

Maximilian and Charlotte were able to enjoy their beautiful castle for only four years or so before leaving for Mexico, where Maximilian was crownedEmperor Maximilian of Mexico, only to be executed by firing squad in 1867.

Legend has it that Charlotte, mad with grief, still wanders in the park calling his name. Their home, a splendid example of an aristocratic 19th century residence, retains all its original interior furnishings.

The beauty of the castle and the park, together with the sad and romantic story of the young imperial couple, still fascinates tourists all over the world and has made it one of the most visited destinations in Europe.

GIANT CAVE
What setting could be more fascinating for a child than an enormous cave (that is the meaning of its Italian name), where our prehistoric ancestors and terrifying cave bears lived during the remote Neolithic Era?

Located in Borgo Grotta, this cave is a perfect example of a subterranean Karst environment. It is listed by Guinness World Records as the tourist cave with the world’s largest hall.

Just to give an idea of the impressive size of this cavern: one of the chambers, the Grande Caverna, is 98.5 m high, 167.6 m long and 76.3 m wide. The maximum depth reached on the visitors’ path is 101.1 m. Impressive, isn’t it?

Visitors can take guided tours all year, descending to 100 m below ground level. Comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the constant temperature of 11°C are recommended.
