The historic hospitality of the Hotel Splendide Royal since 1887 blends with the sunny welcome of the city of Lugano, to give you a stay that is suspended between past and future. Overlooking the shores of Lake Ceresio, the Splendide welcomes you with all the comforts of a modern Urban Resort that combines a traditional atmosphere and innovative services.

The family-run Splendide will make you feel at home, thanks to the attention to detail that we reserve for each guest, transforming a simple stay into an experience to enjoy and remember. Enjoy your stay, we will welcome you with a smile!

Presidential Suite
After the Medici, the Colonna, the Orsini, you. The vastness of the first room does not impress you until you see the vaulted ceiling and its frescoes. How high? Six meters? Higher. Armchairs and sofa display a patina only acquired by decades of care provided by craftsmen too modest to let anyone call them artists.

The wardrobe despite its oversized volume fits perfectly to the proportions of the place. Walnut, geometrical marquetry work and golden ormolus make that wardrobe a conversation piece. The twelve branch gilded bronze chandelier emits Renaissance vibes, as it should. Paintings, views of Venice, are a sophisticated hint of treasures to come.

Walk to your bedroom. Murano’s artists crafted a unique crystal masterpiece worthy of only the richest Venetian palazzo. Its lights cast a soft aura on an extra large bed. De luxe bedding and embroidered monograms are de rigueur. Pieces of exquisite antique furniture await your praises. You are a connoisseur.

Any of your four French windows open to give you way. A terrace where twenty people could easily party offers dining table, coffee table, armchairs. From there you own a unique, unparalleled, unchallenged view of the Lake of Lugano, its water fountain and of the Italian Alps so close on the other shore.

The view is a third floor view: Nothing is impossible for guests saying at “l’Etage Noble”, the floor reserved to Nobility. Well, the hotel is built on a hill. Your bathrooms are vast and modern. Pay heed, Her Imperial Highness Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary impressed your very own mirror with her beauty? Romy Schneider was a guest.

In the same pane of reflecting glass, a number of royalties checked that their white tie complied with the stringent rules of Etiquette. They are solid; they resisted the most powerful vocalizations of Luciano Pavarotti.

Your Personal Assistant will be pleased. The geeky stuff is there and the coffee machine as advertised by George Clooney. Are you seduced by the elegant grace of the Presidential Suite, The Hotel Splendide Royal finest?

Junior Suite Palace
All suites, in their own style, display a wealth of finely crafted furniture. Some dare the fragile elegance of silk; some prefer the warmer comfort of velvet. Elegant settees, large armchairs gather around a small high table or a lower one with a marble top the colour of onyx or some exquisite marquetry.

The rippled appearance of precious walnut graces your chest of drawers or another piece of similar furniture. That moiré effect makes you notice a bespoke cabinet containing hard to resist temptations It is the minibar.

Some unexpected charming Belle Epoque conversation piece may appear in the form of a coiffeuse, a mirror, a huge wardrobe that would overpower a smaller apartment.
Enter in that wardrobe. Can you hear the roars of the wise white lion of Narnia’s fame?

If your suite has no such gate to the world of legends find solace and explore your walk in wardrobe. All suites have their own secrets. Some are found in the bathroom. Some behind the impressive curtains framing you windows. Some on the ceiling.

Some include that firmly locked door opening to a forbidden universe. You can get access and transform your suite into a two-bedroom suite. Some gold coins (or another swipe of your credit card) are necessary. Uniformity and standardization are anathema. You are staying in a Palace.

Still, each junior suite provides an enchanting view of the Lugano lake framed by the sharp peaks of the Alps. Back from an excursion, a shopping spree or before diner, what you want is an invigorating shower or a relaxing bath.

A battalion of little bottles awaits your review. Gels, shampoos, hair conditioners, bath salts, ….Wrap yourself in pure cotton bathrobes and on dry land, use your hairdryer. Be careful.

Wi-fi and entertainment system are up to scratch and regularly updated. Your children are also protected. You chose the daring elegance of uniqueness. Life is Royal. You are staying at the Hotel Splendide Royal.

Deluxe Palace
Each room is different. Who would want uniformity? In the Belle Epoque it was de rigueur. All provide the same feeling of vastness, the view to the shining lake and the peaks of the Southern Alps. Colour schemes were carefully selected to please the eyes and comply with the unique architecture of the Palace.

Thanks to many efforts, the charm of the past still radiates while amenities are very twenty first century. The Palace is no Sleeping Beauty. Wonderful bedding and absolute silence are guarantee of happy dreams and sound sleep.

A corner dedicated to two very large comfy armchairs and a coffee table is a perfect spot for you to relax. Early in the morning, well sited, you may watch through a large window small fishing boats following the white and red ferry cruising towards the Italian shore.

Wifi and TV, oops entertainment system, are as new and efficient as can be. The bathroom is all marble and mirrors. Complimentary amenities are so many that you would loose count of them if you tried. You will love the strength of the shower flow. Do not steal the towels as soft as a tender embrace!

You are a fashionista and you brought three suitcases full of your very modern and fresh cloth collections. You will appreciate the many wooden hangers and the neatness of the wardrobe. Would dust dare spoil your D&G number? A complimentary hanging travel bag is there for you.

You do not really need it. By eternal decree, there is never any dust in a 5 star Swiss hotel. You have your doubts? Look at the chandelier. Convinced? Life is very sweet. You are staying at the Splendide Royal.

Traditional Afternoon Tea
The Splendide Hotel once again offers in its lounge the appointment that has been upheld for over a century with its Traditional Afternoon Time. In pure English style, dedicated to the people of Lugano and all the Ticino inhabitants who love local products and traditional British delicacies.

At the beginning of the 20th century they were princes and monarchs, then entertainers and intellectuals. Today everyone can carve out an afternoon within these historic walls to savour an experience of yesteryear, with the skill and expertise of contemporary confectionery.

Also this year the Traditional Afternoon Tea returns to the panoramic tables of our Belle Epoque Bar, an unmissable event, especially in this season that encourages us to enjoy more intimate and family gatherings.

If, in fact, as British customs tell us, afternoon tea is a ritual to be consumed with friends, the armchairs and sofas of the Splendide Hotel invite you to an intimate afternoon filled with delightful treats.

For the Splendide, tea time is certainly not a novelty, but rather a real centuries-old tradition. In fact, the rite of tea combined with sweet and savoury flavours has been consumed on its sofas every autumn and winter since the early 1900s.

12 different types of tea, each with its own personality and originating from China, Japan, South Africa or the peaks of the Himalayas. All selected to ensure you enjoy a traditional experience worth remembering.

The Wine Cellar

For those who enjoy the nectar that is fine wine, a small corner of paradise awaits you at the Splendide – in the shape of the beautiful and vast wine cellar. The Hotel Splendide Royal’s ‘Wine Cellar’ is a jewel waiting to be discovered and is well-stocked with world class labels and the very best Ticino can offer.

Here you can experience Ticino’s foremost wine – Merlot – a shining example of what the region and its vast vineyards offer. With sommelier Simone Ragusa’s guidance, you will discover rare wines and renowned names.

Simone will recount for you the stories and anecdotes of the wines and their producers, making your experience a virtual journey into the world of wine. The cellar is an elegant and welcoming space, devoted to the art of wine, which demonstrates the region’s passion for and mastery of, the wine sector.

Wine & Dine Master Class
Do not miss the opportunity to get closer to the fascinating world of wine with the help of a great professional. The fabulous “Forziere del Vino”, Splendide Royal’s wine cellar with over 550 labels, is the suggestive location of the event.

Starting with the theoretical notions, a culinary path will follow where each of the wines to taste will be combined with a delicious course. During the evening you will learn about the peculiarities and the distinguishing features of the different wines and you will be guided by Simone Ragusa, already awarded Best Sommelier of Switzerland, to discover the secrets of the nectar of Bacchus.

The selection of wines for the evening is top quality and the delicious dishes of the Chef Domenico Ruberto are perfectly paired with the tasting of the international wines. Simone Ragusa will accompany you throughout the evening and will be available to answer your questions and reveal some tricks of the trade.

Find out when the next Wine & Dine Master Class takes place by consulting the events page or organise an evening for you and your friends by contacting the events office .

Breakfast
This motto in Italian is the inspiration for the Splendide’s breakfast – an incentive to enjoy the day that has just begun. The buffet combines sweet and savoury delicacies, with a focus on local ingredients and fresh, seasonal produce.

For those who choose to start their day with energy, a special menu of egg dishes will help you choose what suits you best, from the simplest scrambled eggs to the most mouth-watering of Royal Eggs Benedict.

For those who like to pamper themselves with a healthy, light breakfast, there is a choice of fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli, cereals and freshly squeezed juices. The Baker’s Corner is dedicated entirely to bread, the star of the show in different shapes and types, so that you can sample a range of Swiss baked specialities.

Ample space is allocated to the preserves, with a variety of recipes made from Swiss fruit and, of course, Ticino honey, which is produced just a stone’s throw from the Splendide. These products come from the Otaf Foundation, which has been supporting people with disabilities in Ticino for over 100 years.

Be sure not to miss our national cured meats and cheeses, as well as the selection of hot dishes to get your day off to the best start. Particular attention is paid to pastries, featuring creations by the Splendide’s pastry chef, who offers freshly baked cakes, sweet little treats and the ever-present Tiramisù on a daily basis.

La Piazzetta

“Do more of what makes you happy!” La Piazzetta builds its concept around the joy of living and those who know the importance of a smile. Born as a panoramic lounge where signature cocktails can be enjoyed in a sophisticated and relaxing environment, from summer 2021, an exquisite novelty has been added to this spirit.

It is now on board a Piaggio Ape with a wooden oven that the real Neapolitan pizza is prepared and can be savoured in a classic or gourmet version on the terrace overlooking the lake.

Accompanying the Mediterranean dish par excellence, our head-barman Simone Romanò, has prepared a special cocktail list to pair beautifully with your pizza and offer a very contemporary combination of tastes.

Discovering the Italian part of Switzerland aboard a vintage car, amidst palm-lined avenues, 4-cylinder engines and 50s / 60s charm. It is only by enjoying the lake breeze on board a 1950s or 1960s Made in Italy convertible that Ticino will reveal its true Mediterranean soul.

Reliving the charm of the Dolce Vita will be natural, along the scenic routes between Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, driving one of the classic spiders that travelled the legendary roads of the Mille Miglia.

A stop for an ice cream and then off, in the shade of palm trees, between avenues and small Ticino villages: driving an ultralight two-seater of the Fiat Special Bodyworks or an Alfa Romeo signed by Pininfarina will be as simple as taking a train and in an instant you will disembark in sunny Lugano, where the Splendide has already thought of everything for you.

Family
Lugano has a friendly, warm and welcoming soul, especially when planning a family stay. Here’s how to plot the perfect family holiday between beautiful parks and picturesque lake sceneries, to spend pleasant, fun and relaxing moments for both older and younger children.

An adventurous day out

If you prefer to take life at a slightly slower place there are some easy to moderate walking paths suitable for all ages and the serious hikers will love the more challenging routes of Lema-Tamaro and Rivera-Alpe Foppa which offer scenery that is simply out of this world.

Even if you prefer a relaxing time altogether, it’s worth heading up Mount Tamaro for the fresh mountain air and views alone. On a warm sunny day, you can enjoy the terrace and sun loungers, a peaceful haven while the kids are at play. http://www.montetamaro.ch/en

Ride & Hike to the top
If you love culture then Monte San Salvatore is a must visit. Its fame extends far and wide. Pilgrims would make their way to the summit in order to pay homage to Christ who, according to ancient legend, stopped there briefly during his ascension to Heaven.

Nowadays the mountain draws its many visitors because of what is arguably one of the best views in Switzerland. The panoramic views are outstanding, taking in Lake Lugano and the magnificent mountain ranges of the Swiss and Savoy Alps.

The Funicular railway here has been taking passengers to the top since 1888. Slowly climbing high amongst the trees it operates from morning to evening, March to November, with half-hourly departures. There are also excellent hiking trails that allow you to enjoy walking through the unspoilt countryside and gaze at the splendid scenery.

Culture lovers can also enjoy the museum which features exciting new exhibitions and information about the history of the mountain. After exploring you can sit back and relax with a glass of wine and a bite to eat in the Vetta restaurant which offers menus inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, with healthy products of the season.

On a balmy summer’s day, take a table on the terrace and admire the breathtaking views, you will truly feel on top of the world. The concierge team welcomes any questions you may have about any of the excursions and will be happy to help.

Splash and Spa
Set in beautiful gardens you can enjoy the great outdoors all from the comfort of your sun lounger at Splash and Spa, located at the feet of Mount Tamaro. As the name suggests, it is the perfect place for relaxation and play.

Children will love splashing around in the simulated wave pool, whizzing down the slides and playing amongst the fountains, in fact there’s a whole dedicated area for the kids to enjoy the aquatic fun. Adults, will love the various indoor and outdoor pools which provide stunning vistas over the mounts.

Try taking a dip in the Iodine saltwater pool, and feel its therapeutic properties and minerals help to relax and rejuvenate the body. On a bright sunny day, the terrace is the perfect place to unwind with a good book and the bar close to hand. Enjoy a cool drink overlooking the lush green countryside or if you prefer to stay in the pool there is also a swim up bar.

Whilst the children are having fun with dad why not let mum enjoy the ultimate indulgence, an exclusive Radio-frequency treatment at the spa, great for increasing the blood flow or simply wile away the hours in the relaxation rooms with the choice of four saunas, Turkish baths and even a hot pool playing under water music.

After the day’s enjoyable antics stay in relaxation mode with a sumptuous dinner, under the shade of plants and flowers, on the terrace of the Splendide Royal.

A tour of Switzerland in one hour
Ever wondered what it would be like to see the whole of one country in just an hour? Pay a visit to Swissminiatur. Swiss pioneer Pierre Vuigner had a dream to create not just a miniature village but the whole of Switzerland scaled down to size. Swissminiatur opened its doors to the public in 1959 and has been fascinating visitors from across the globe ever since.

Set in a beautiful park surrounded by mountains like Monte Generoso, Monte San Salvatore and Monte San Giorgio, one can marvel at more than 120 models which reproduce the most important buildings throughout Switzerland. Walking round the park is a magical experience for adults and children alike.

Trains run on tiny tracks, boats sail on the lakes and a cable car runs up and down the mountain. It really is a work of art and has to be seen to be believed. Swissminiatur is a spectacular day out for all the family to enjoy.

The little ones can take a ride on the passenger train and children of all ages will find lots of fun in the play area. The Hotel Splendide Royal features adjoining rooms that can accommodate families with children.

Goods smuggling across the lake
Wake up to the sun streaming into your luxury room and take a moment to enjoy a morning buffet breakfast with your family, before leaving for a fascinating place not too far away from the hotel. What makes this excursion so special is that you can begin and end this journey by boat, which will no doubt keep the children entertained.

Lake Lugano is perhaps not the most conventional place for a museum but what was once a Swiss border guard post is now home to a place of interest for visitors interested in gaining a glimpse into the roles of border guards and customs agents in Switzerland and learning all about goods smuggling, drug searches, economic crime, migration, precious metal control, the protection of cultural property and species protection.

Opened as a museum in 1949, you can view artefacts from 1848, when the Swiss Confederation was founded, right up to the present day. Although the actual Swiss border cannot be seen from here, there is a wonderful view of the lake and Monte Bré from the terrace.

A short boat ride around the shore line makes for a memorable day out for you and the little ones before returning for a cool drink and a bite to eat back at the Splendide.
