Vintry & Mercer is nestled at the heart of the City, among the livery halls, guilds and narrow streets that line the banks of the Thames. This is where past and present intersect, where the long traditions of trade and commerce come to life in the contemporary style of the 92 bespoke rooms and suites.

Our inspiration comes from the historic trading guilds of the area. Vintry was the centre for London wine merchants; Mercer was for noble textile sellers who specialised in fine silks and damasks. In the narrow streets near our hotel, this history perseveres.

Yet the locale is now a destination for the modern traveller. It’s a place where architectural wonders share the cityscape with global powerhouses, alive with the bustle of commerce and conversation that reflect our first-class location at the centre of a turning world.

Vintry & Mercer is in the heart of the city. Whether you are looking for a historical tour of London or a weekend shopping getaway, the neighbourhood has something for everyone.

The hotel is walking distance to the Museum of London, Guildhall and Tate Modern. For those who are looking for a relaxing shopping getaway, the likes of Leadenhall Market and The Royal Exchange are a short walk from the hotel.

THE HISTORY
Vintry & Mercer is set in London’s Vintry Ward, among the livery halls, guilds and narrow streets that line the banks of the Thames. This is where past and present intersect, where the long traditions of trade and commerce come to life in the contemporary style of the hotel’s 92 bespoke rooms and suites.

Our name was inspired by the historic trading guilds of the area; Vintry, established in 1364, was the centre for London wine merchants, and Mercer, established in 1304, was for noble textile sellers who specialised in fine silks and damasks.

The nearby street names — Wine, Honey, Saffron, Garlic(k), Cinnamon — pay tribute to the exotic ingredients that once arrived on the shores of the Thames, filling the city with colour.

Today, this historic locale is a destination for the modern traveller. It’s a place where architectural wonders like St Paul’s Cathedral share the cityscape with global powerhouses, from the Bank of England to the Bloomberg Media Group.

In the narrow streets near Vintry & Mercer’s Garlick Hill location, history perseveres. Yet guests are connected to the rest of the capital via the extensive rail and underground network, accessible from Mansion House, Bank and Cannon Street Station. Explore with Vintry & Mercer.

At Vintry & Mercer, we take our responsibilities to the planet seriously. We are running on 100 per cent renewable electricity, sourced from wind, solar and biomass generators. We are also using solar panelling, heat pump technology in our air-conditioning system, and a ‘Combined Heating and Power’ system to ensure minimal environmental output.

ROOMS & SUITES
Plush velvet curtains, bespoke fabrics, leather door handles — each design detail in our rooms and suites has been inspired by the merchant taylors who touted their wares on the nearby streets.

There are historic navigation maps, and palm leaf wall-coverings, made-to-measure velvet headboards and soft carpets. But alongside these elegant references to the past, rooms are equipped with modern luxuries, from Nespresso machines to Marshall speakers.

STUDIO SUITES
Vintry & Mercer Suites are as contemporary as they are elegant. Balcony Suites have external terraces spanning the width of the room, while Corner Suites offer views of the cityscape through floor-to-ceiling windows.

In both, guests can relax on the king-sized beds, lounge in the upholstered sofas, and soak in the bathtub, complete with an in-built television. Suites can be interconnected with Superior Rooms on request.

DELUXE STUDIO
Deluxe Studios have all the luxury touches guests will find in Deluxe Rooms — king-sized beds, velvet headboards, a chaise longue or plump armchair — but with even more space to relax. Deluxe Studios also have dramatic views of the city, either from external balconies or through floor-to-ceiling windows lining the walls.

STANDARD
Vintry & Mercer’s Standard Rooms offer a stylish, contemporary space to spend the night. Guests can fall back onto the soft double beds, backed by large ochre-coloured headboards with matching cotton velvet curtains. Feature wallpaper depicts abstract maps of the city. These rooms can be interconnected on request.

DINING IN THE CITY

Mercer Roof Terrace can be hired exclusively for breakfast meetings of up to 36 people until 10am and is also available for private hire on request.

VINTRY IZAKAYA
Vintry Izakaya is an Asian tapas eatery on the ground floor, with a menu that pulses with fresh, bold Asian flavours from morning to night. Wine is central to our approach — close to the hotel, merchant sailors landing from Bordeaux used to store their wines.

At Vintry Izakaya, our wine is tapped straight from the large barrels lining the gantry, and can be enjoyed at the bar or with a meal.

Our dishes incorporate the flavours of Asia, from the salty tang of miso and the fiery kick of kimchi, to the freshness of yuzu and gentle heat of wasabi — each dish served on small plates, perfect for sharing.

MERCER ROOF TERRACE
In one sweep, the view from Mercer Roof Terrace takes in London’s skyline, from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral to the glass tip of The Shard. Here, guests can dine al fresco or enjoy a drink at the bar above the city lights. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and convivial, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening wide to bring the outdoors in.

DO NOT DISTURB COCKTAIL BAR
Enjoy 2 for 1 on a selection of our barrel-aged and house cocktails, available everyday from 5pm to 7pm! DND, Do not Disturb is a discreet, underground and sophisticated speakeasy cocktail bar takes inspiration from the clandestine bars of 1920s New York with hand-beaded images of Ziegfeld Follies girls lining the walls, beckoning guests into this secret bar through a darkened entrance tucked back on Garlick Hill.

DND offers guests speciality barrel-aged and house cocktails alongside a menu of small plates, while relaxing on plush velvet chairs and leather banquette seating. The bar is open to guests over the age of 18.

MEETINGS & EVENTS
At Vintry & Mercer, we are following government guidelines closely – so we wanted to make clear that we can still accommodate private business meeting & weddings celebrations up to 15 people in the Library.

Please contact our events team for more information. We have three private rooms on the lower ground floor, each inflected with individual character and style, in a part of the hotel that is secluded and quiet.

Rooms include audio and visual equipment, mini-bar fridges, Nespresso machines, television screens and high-speed internet. Whether guests choose our Library, Drawing Room or Music Room, they can be guaranteed an original and quiet venue for dinner, drinks, or business meetings.

THE DRAWING ROOM
In the Drawing Room, the history of the hotel’s location is played out in the design — wine red walls and a bold, limited edition map of the city. There’s also a French panelled ceiling and a copper mesh chandelier. It can be interconnected with the Library for larger dinners or drinks parties.

THE LIBRARY
The Library is elegant and chic – a reflection of London’s history as a trading entrepôt, with the ceiling decked in an enormous map. Daylight floods through a skyline into our largest meeting room at Vintry & Mercer. For those needing an even bigger space, we can throw open the doors for guests to spill into the interconnected Drawing Room.

THE MUSIC ROOM
Meeting rooms in London don’t come more stylish than our Music Room, with eclectic teal blue wall panels, wooden writing tables and a bespoke carpet inspired by the British Regimental tiles.

Colourful, iconic British album covers decorate the walls. It’s a place where guests can meet, dine and listen to music — using the room’s collection of records, or their own favourite vinyls.

FITNESS & FACILITIES
Vintry & Mercer is a place to unwind, in a modern environment inflected with notes of the past. On the lower ground floor, the fitness studio is kitted out with the latest Life Fitness workout equipment — a treadmill, exercise bike, cross trainer and rowing machine, as well as an integrated digital screen with Internet access and iPhone dock.

NEIGHBOURHOOD
Vintry & Mercer has the tools to help you plan the perfect London weekend. Here you will find our top picks of things to do in and around the hotel, as well as unbeatable offers to take advantage of while you are staying with us.

ARTS & CULTURE
The buildings around Vintry & Mercer have stood the test of time, enduring the Great Fire of 1666 and the Blitz of 1940 and 1941. On the church of St. James Garlickhythe, Vintry & Mercer’s closest neighbour, hangs the capital’s oldest clock — housing a mechanism which has been ticking since 1682.

Today it’s also home to the patriotic Royal Bells that pealed across the city for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Across the Thames sits Shakespeare’s Globe, where visitors can watch the Great Bard’s plays performed in the theatre dedicated to his work.

For a modern take on the city’s cultural scene, there’s The Barbican Centre, a mile from the hotel, known for pushing the boundaries of art in all its forms, regularly showing some of the best dance, music and theatre in Europe.

Nearby Somerset House is famed for its contemporary galleries and cultural programmes. There’s also Tate Modern on the opposite bank of the Thames — perhaps the UK’s best-known modern art institution

ARCHITECTURE
Vintry & Mercer is surrounded by London’s most iconic architectural treasures. From the roof terrace, guests can gaze at St. Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Christopher Wren. Not far from here is the Guildhall, a medieval treasure with an enormous Gothic Grand Hall.

Runners can take the Thames Path — a route which tracks along the banks of the Thames, past many of the world’s most recognisable buildings. East leads to the Victorian-built Tower Bridge and the infamous Tower of London, prison to Guy Fawkes and Rudolf Hess. West passes by Big Ben, the London Eye, and the nation’s seat of power, the Houses of Parliament.

As a hotel near London’s financial district, Vintry & Mercer is also surrounded by some of the most iconic new structures in Europe.

There’s The Shard — the tallest building in The UK — and 30 St Mary Axe, nicknamed ‘The Gherkin’. 20 Fenchurch Street, home to the landscaped ‘Sky Garden’, looks like it has blown sideways in the wind, with a gravity-defying, open-air terrace on the 35th floor.

The Millennium Bridge runs across the Thames near the hotel, offering views up to St Paul’s Cathedral on the north bank, and down to Tate Modern on the south.

EATING & DRINKING
Situated just a stone throw away from the hotel, the Bloomberg Arcade, is a pedestrianised public art and foodie haven featuring nine eateries. Caravan, celebrates menus that combine signature favourites with new creations, showcasing flavours from all around the world.

London’s finest Asian Restaurant, Kym’s, also situated in the arcade, serves innovative Chinese dishes and drinks which reflect the art of Hong Kong’s roasted meats. The neighbourhood around Vintry & Mercer also bustles with classic British gourmet experiences, from a full English shared with London cabbies, to that Cockney stalwart of smoked eels.

Since the Sixties, the family-run Maria’s Market Café in Borough Market has been serving the best bubble and squeak and mugs of tea in London. For lunch, there’s Sweetings on Queen Victoria Street, the oldest fish restaurant in the city, for oysters and lobster.

Beneath the cobblestones of Leadenhall Victorian market is Beadles, a wine bar which hosts tastings and private events.  There’s also Cheese at Leadenhall, offering over 200 cheeses from Britain and Europe.

Like Vintry & Mercer, the City of London savours tradition, but it also embraces innovation in its restaurants and bars. For the highest outdoor dining terrace in Europe, there’s SUSHISAMBA, delivering a unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine.

There’s also Michelin-starred Restaurant Story — Tom Seller’s debut eatery, which tells the story of seasonal British food through an endlessly evolving 10-course menu. For more casual dining experiences, Elliot’s Cafe in Borough Market offers simple, mindful cooking where fresh ingredients are done to perfection on a wood-fired grill.

SHOPPING IN LONDON
In the thirteenth-century, the first international company in the world began trading just a stone’s throw from where Vintry & Mercer now stands. This history has been memorialised by the cobbled bazaars and colourful markets that continue to weave a mercantile spirit through the City today.

One of the most famous is Leadenhall — a striking, Victorian covered market home to artisanal cafes and English food stores. There’s also the vintage fashion market of Petticoat Lane which twists through the narrow streets, not far from Old Spitalfields.

Borough Market, across the Thames, has been selling food for a millennium, from mead in the Middle Ages to the English cheeses of today. Alongside these classic London markets, the City has seen a retail revolution, turning sixteenth-century structures into first-class shopping destinations.

Royal Exchange, one of Britain’s best-known malls, is now filled with bespoke jewellers and designer labels. Cheapside, which sold the garlic brought up from the port on the Thames, now bustles with big-name restaurants and high street boutiques.

One New Change, built on the spot where bread and milk were traded in the thirteenth century, is one of the City’s newest and largest retail hotspots, offering three floors of shops and restaurants.
