Historic Neo-Gothic Estonian knight-castle Keila-Joa Schloss Fall Castle, woke to a new life in 2013 when, after extensive renovation, it reopened its doors to guests. Three years later the boutique hotel was opened, with time-true and stylishly furnished luxury suites, an excellent restaurant and a winery with well-chosen wines.

A fascinating museum where many art exhibitions are displayed and beautiful castle halls where concerts and theatres are held. Just 32 kilometers from Tallinn, near the sea, there is a beautiful park, which has been made unique by the Keila waterfall. Because of the falling water, the gem of this protected area was called Schloss Fall.

Knight’s Castle Keila-Joa Schloss Fall, which emerged already in the 19th century next to Keila River and one of Estonia’s most beautiful waterfall, has seen different times throughout history: it has been grand and glorious, but also forgotten…

The castle’s history is a fascinating and lively snapshot of Estonian history, linking it to the mighty empires, shiny rulers and big personalities. According to the legend, it was here in 1833 that the future imperial Russian national anthem was first performed during a visit of the Russian Emperor Nikolai I.

The castle, that was asleep like a Sleeping Beauty for decades, finally found new owners in 2010. Their dream – to awaken the Neo-Gothic style castle to a new life, became a reality three years later, when in honour of the castle’s 180th anniversary first restored former Volkonsky and Benckendorff living quarters were opened to the public.

In 2016 the second floor, with luxurious suites in the style of the era, was completed. Today, Keila-Joa Schloss Fall Castle has a beautiful boutique hotel, a cozy restaurant, a museum, an exhibition hall and a wine cellar. There are many fascinating exhibitions, concerts, seminars and private events held in Keila-Joa castle.

PALDISKI HARBOUR
Paldiski harbour was destined to become an important stronghold in the Russian defence system, and Czar Peter the Great designed the Dutch type fortifications himself. The fortress with five bastions, located on Pakri peninsula, was cut into the high limestone as one solid construction; the earth walls were 4 m high and 17 m above the sea level. In 1790, the fortress had over 40 cannons.

Between 1939 and 1940, oil storages were built in the moat and a railway branch was extended to the fortress; however, the branch was destroyed during the war. During post-war period, gravel was taken from the earth walls for construction and roads, thus destroying walls between the east and south-east bastions. Bastions afford a wonderful view of the sea.

PAKRI LIGHTHOUSE
This lighthouse is situated on the north-western tip of the Pakri peninsula on a high slate bluff marking the water’s edge of a very important shipping lane along the northern coast. A similar structure has stood here since the time of Swedish rule.

A new slate lighthouse was ordered to be erected here by Peter I in 1724. Another, even bigger (48-foot) lighthouse replaced it in 1760 – possibly a reconstruction of the original. A new stone lighthouse was completed 80 metres from its predecessor in 1889. Due to natural collapse of the cliff face, the old structure had ended up too close to the edge and had to be demolished.

TURISALU KLINT
Türisalu klint is one of the most impressive nature object on the Northern Estonian limestone coast, towering up to 31 metres. Platform of the Türisalu klint with its romantic sea view and easy access is a popular destination among the citizens of Tallinn; the high vantage point affords a breathtaking view of the sea and Vääna-Jõesuu beach.

During a windy day, you can enjoy the view without leaving your car in the car park by the platform. If you would like to get closer to waves, then you should use a trail descending along the klint. Trails go in both directions from the platform; if you go east, or to the right, you can see the wonderful limestone klint from underneath.

TURISALU CLIFF
It is possible to perform a variety of tricks on the Türisalu cliff – push yourself as far as you can from the fall and you will softly land back. You can also run on the cliff and go for a 360-degree spin around your own axis.

It is easier than it seems. The two slopes are approximately 5 meters away from each other, which means that you can go down with a friend and try to perform the same tricks at the same time.

VAANA JOESUU BEACH
Vääna-Jõesuu beach, frequented visited by several thousand people during hot summer days, has a swimming area with the maximum depth of 1.8 m, surrounded by buoys. In addition, information about the quality of water is displayed during the summer season. The beach is comfortably sandy, and the water gets deep fast, is clean and forms fun bow waves with western winds.

VAANA MANOR
Vääna manor, its park and ancillary buildings have a special value due to their interesting cultural history and works of art dating from various eras. The earliest information about Vääna manor dates back to 1325. Until 1919, it used to belong to von Stackelbergs who constructed one of the most peculiar late Baroque manor buildings here.

From 1920 until today, the manor has housed a kindergarten and a primary school; during the last two decades, restoration work has been performed in the building. Interesting to know: in the 19th century, artificial ruins, which still stand here, were constructed in the park in order to create a romantic atmosphere.

SUURUPI LIGHTHOUSES
The upper Suurupi lighthouse is open from May 2017! The cylinder-shaped lighthouse made from limestone was built in 1760 to make it possible for ships to find shelter from storms between Naissaar Island and Suurupi.

The lighthouse is surrounded by a walled campus from the 1890s. The lighthouses and campuses are under state protection as cultural monuments and together, they show the way to the ports in Tallinn.

The bottom Suurupi lighthouse is currently closed for visitors and can only be observed from the outside. The gable-roofed tetrahedral wooden lighthouse, shaped like the frustum of a pyramid, was completed in 1859. The lighthouse is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

ARVO PART CENTER
The world famous Estonian composer Arvo Pärt Centre was founded in 2010, at the initiative of Arvo Pärt and his family, with the aim to create opportunities for preserving and studying the composer’s creative heritage in his home country and native environment.

The centre is located in Laulasmaa, 35 kilometres from the capital, on the scenic peninsula, near the sea, on the edge of a pine forest. The centre house is named Aliina – a name that stands as a symbol of Pärt’s music, and in the context means new beginnings. Piano piece “For Aliina” marked the start of the unique tintinnabuli style in music.
