ACCOMMODATION
As you enter your room or suite at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, you feel the ancient stillness of Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park wash over you. Our 56 guest rooms including five suites are located throughout the classic volcanic stone lodge, either in a two-storey block overlooking the water hole, a series of charming cottages, or in a lodging of luxury suites.

Offering views of the water hole or Chyulu Hills, our exceptionally spacious accommodations are beautifully appointed with natural stone walls and locally inspired furnishings, fabrics and artwork.

All accommodations at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge are designed to meet the needs of families, couples and large groups with complimentary high-speed Internet, private balconies, deluxe Penhaligon’s bath amenities and 24-hour room service.

DINING
The central dining room and the alfresco rock-built bar at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge were beautifully designed and decorated in the local style to offer an unforgettable dining experience. The dining room features a stone terrace overlooking the wildlife-filled water hole and the bar offers comfortable day beds with majestic views of the rolling Chyulu Hills.

Each dish is crafted from the finest meats, dairy products, fruits and vegetables sourced from the communities bordering Tsavo Park. Breakfast is complimentary to all hotel guests. In typical safari-style, we offer a ‘full English breakfast’ as well as European options.

Breakfast and lunch are presented in buffet-style and feature a wide range of international choices encompassing meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian selections. Our table d’hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee.

Guests may also enjoy theme nights with specialties ranging from pasta and Mongolian-style stir-fry, BBQ and spiced roast to Kenyan favourites like “Nyama Choma” (traditionally roasted meats), “Sukuma” (local kale cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and coriander), “Posho” (maize) and other local delicacies.

Kindly note that our restaurant caters to any special dietary requirements our guests may have.

BREAKFAST ON LION ROCK
A vast embankment of volcanic rock, which rises from the plains and offers unique views, Lion Rock is so-called because it used to be a favourite lion haunt, including the famous man-eating lions of Tsavo. Today, the rock is used exclusively by the Lodge as a breakfast spot.

Setting off early from the lodge, guests can enjoy a gentle game drive en route to the rock, arriving to find that a full English breakfast has been laid out for them on its summit. (Simple bathroom facilities are provided.)

SUNDOWNERS ON LION ROCK
The Sundowner is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920s when elegant cocktails were always served while guests watched the magnificent spectacle of the African sunset.

Timed to commence as the sun starts its descent, the Tsavo Serena Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at Lion Rock just as the evening sky turns golden-pink to enjoy full bar service and cocktail snacks. Musical entertainment can also be provided. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner.

BUSH DINNER
Dine in the wild and taste safari life at its best, accompanied by a group of scarlet-clad Maasai morans (warriors) or Akamba drummers. Located in a grove of acacia trees immediately adjacent to the lodge, your lantern-lit dinner begins with cocktails around the campfire.

Dinner will then be cooked on a blazing BBQ, accompanied by a wide range of salads and vegetables. While dessert and coffee are served, our cultural entertainers will provide you with songs, chants and dance displays.

24-HOUR ROOM SERVICE
From breakfast in bed to a romantic dinner to a late-evening snack, Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge offers around-the-clock in-room dining so that you may enjoy a private, peaceful meal in the comfort of your room or on the balcony whenever you desire.

EXPERIENCES
Experience the breathtaking beauty and exhilarating adventures of the “Land of Lions and Lava” with an array of activities designed to stir your soul. From a variety of recreational excursions to visits to nearby landmarks to breakfast or cocktails in the bush, allow the staff at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge to create an itinerary tailored specifically to your interests.

BUSH BBQ DINNER
When the food couldn’t get any better, throw in a view to die for! Adjacent to the Lodge is our dedicated bush barbeque area, which overlooks the Chyulu Hills and is traditionally lit with safari lanterns. Reached by a winding, lantern-lit pathway from the lodge, it features a stone-built buffet-area, bush bar and a glowing charcoal barbeque.

Here, our chefs prepare a lavish 7-course banquet, which is served to individual tables gathered around a blazing fire-pit. At the end of dinner, our guitarist entertains you as drinks are served around the bonfire. A special cultural dancing troup may also be at hand to entertain you.

VISIT TO MZIMA SPRINGS
“Mzima,” meaning alive in Kiswahili, is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to a unique ecosystem at only 40 kilometres away from the Chyulu Hills.

With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green. It’s a haven for fishes, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos. The main attractions are the two nature trails leading to an underwater viewing tank built to allow visitors to watch hippos!

ROARING ROCKS
Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs.

Over the plain called Rhino Valley and the Ngulia, the Roaring Rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has long been an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. The eerie Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of cicadas that inhabit them and the howl of wind that hits the bare rocks.

VISIT TO THE SHETANI CAVES AND LAVA FLOWS
A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions.

They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow “shetani,” meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old. Climbing the flow isn’t an easy task as the thick, black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.

GAME DRIVES
Experience the daily drama that unfolds in the Kenyan Savannah! Tsavo National Park consists of a diverse ecosystem where numerous species of wildlife are spotted on any game drive.

From the tenacious elephant herds to buffalos and the big cats, a game drive in Tsavo is a must-have experience! Both night and daytime game drives are possible to give guests the opportunity to view both diurnal and nocturnal animals.

LION ROCK BREAKFAST WITH BUBBLY
Not many experiences are more memorable, or as typically Kenyan, as breakfast on the “Lion Rock.” One cannot resist the charming “Jambo” from the chefs as they welcome you to our wonderfully set breakfast buffet of cold cuts, fruits, cereals and hot dishes with eggs made to your specifications as you wait. A great setting for wildlife watching, you’re welcome to relax and only say “Kwaheri” (goodbye) after you’ve had enough.

BUBBLY SUNDOWNER AT LION ROCK
The ‘sun-downer’ is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920s when elegant cocktails were always served while watching the spectacle of the African sunset. Timed to begin as the sun starts its descent, the Sundowner opens with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at the site just as the evening sky turns a gold-pink.

WATERING HOLE
The watering hole is located adjacent to the main building, where you can wine and dine while taking in the great view of the green Chyulu Hills and watching a spectacular wide range of wildlife stop by to quench their thirst.
