Martin Wells and Alejandra Umaña were looking for a new challenge. As an Architect and Biologist, respectively, Martin and Alè wanted to introduce a new architectural concept to Costa Rica.
Something that had never been done in Costa Rica. And they wanted to do it in an extreme tropical setting. Where Alè’s biology expertise would blend seamlessly with Martin’s architectural vision.
Alè and Martin’s first concept was to build an extreme Hostel. A dynamic place with skateboards, bikes and daredevil trails. But when they were brought to the top of a mountain in Uvita, they instantly fell in love with the spectacular view. The plan changed. It was the perfect sunset, the perfect day, the perfect timing.
And they did. The result is Alè and Martin’s stunning expression of tropical minimalist design. The clean lines. Lush native gardens. Extraordinary views. You’ll feel Alè and Martin’s fearless and forward-thinking spirit here.

Master Suites
Master Suites are our most exclusive suite category with 140sq.m (1500sq.ft) of private living space. Located high on the mountain top, removed from the others, the Master Suites boast maximum space, Kura-style plunge pools, and the most impressive of ocean views.

Suites are 85sq.m (915sq.ft) of high-design heaven. With extra-wide terraces, expansive glass walls, and views so mesmerizing, you’ll want to sleep with the curtains open.
Junior Suites
Junior Suites are 68sq.m (740sq.ft) of luxury jungle living. Located at canopy level, Junior Suites are front-row tickets to tropical jungle action. Get comfortable on your oversized hammock. You’ll be in for a show of toucans and exotic birds against a blue ocean backdrop.

Dining is a highlight at Kura. Our menus are colorful and diverse, distinctive and flavorsome. Our cooking philosophy revolves around pure, organic and responsibly-sourced ingredients. With a focus on local produce, we even grow our greens at the hotel.
You’ll find a focus on super fresh, local seafood too. From fish carpaccios to spiced ceviche. Whatever the catch of the day, it’ll always be sustainably sourced. Our meat dishes are hormone-free, grass-fed and all ethically-raised from farmers just down the road.

Uvita
Escape to your luxury hideaway on the South Pacific Coast. Perched in the jungle-covered hills, Kura overlooks the little village of Uvita and the Marino Ballena National Park.
Uvita is distinctly low-profile. This closely guarded secret is famous for its iconic Whale’s Tail sandbar, migrating pods of Humpback Whales that visit seasonally, 35km of tropical coastline, and a growing international food scene.
Only 60 minutes south, but a world away from Manuel Antonio, Uvita is situated on the stunning South Pacific coast of Costa Rica’s wild Osa. Named “one of the most biologically intense regions on earth” by National Geographic, the area is one of raw, untamed beauty. One still largely unexplored.
A village of waterfalls, wildlife, and slow sustainable living, Uvita offers an authentic slice of real Costa Rica. From chic eateries and farmers markets to whale-watching, there’s plenty to explore and experience for even the most well-travelled.
The Whale Coast Beaches
The Costa Ballena, or “Whale Coast”, is a truly untouched part of Costa Rica that only few have come to explore. Take your pick of beaches: Uvita Beach, Ballena & Arco, Piñuela, Ventanas, Dominical and Hermosa Beach.
And with 35km of Pacific coastline known for migrating Humpback Whales, don’t be surprised if you find yourself blissfully alone on the sands. Every day we offer complimentary beach shuttles for our guests.
And any time you hit the beach, we’ll provide you with ice water and towels. We also have portable beach chairs available and we can even pack a picnic for you!
So walk the length of the famous Whale’s Tail at low tide. Grab an ‘agua de pipa’ (coconut water) and enjoy the people watching at Playa Hermosa. Or perhaps take a surf lesson in our warm waters. Beach bliss is just a short drive from Kura.
Nauyaca Waterfalls Hike
The spectacular natural wonder known as Nauyaca comprises two impressive waterfalls. Hike over a 4km route to reach the first waterfall which stands at 45m in free fall, and a second tiered waterfall standing at 20m.
Together they form a 1,000sqm pool perfect for swimming, and a number of small natural pools for paddling.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding & Snorkeling
Paddle out to the Whale’s Tail to snorkel amongst the colourful fish that call the calm waters and corals of the Marina Ballena National Park home.
We’ll have some refreshments ready for you to enjoy post swim while you dry off on the shore. After a relaxing break, we’ll get you back on your board for a scenic paddle back to Uvita Beach.
Horseback-Riding
