Ideally located only 120 km from Buenos Aires and close to San Antonio de Areco in the heart of the Pampa, one of the oldest estancias in Argentina, recently renovated with great care as a boutique hotel, successfully combines luxurious comfort and colonial elegance.

The feeling of being welcomed into a private home, into a property steeped in history and tradition makes this hotel a special and timeless place for relaxation. Exquisite cuisine, refined service, gaucho traditions and equestrian sports add to the unique magic of La Bamba.

La Bamba, whose origins date back to 1830 when it formed one of the post houses on the “Camino Real” (Royal Road) that linked Buenos Aires to the north of the country, is one of the oldest Argentinian colonial style estancias.

With its main building and its guard tower which served to defend against native attacks, its former stables (La Pulperia) and its 200 years old park, it is rooted in Argentine and Gaucho history.

Transformed into an estancia in the early twentieth century, it retained its name, derived from the Celtic word “Bahamba” which means “place of rest and hospitality”, and was listed by the City of San Antonio de Areco in 1970.

One of the first estancias to open its doors to the public in the 1980s and completely renovated in 2009 in the pure tradition, La Bamba has today regained its exceptional charm and original grandeur.

Estancia

Located at the end of an avenue lined with century-old plane trees, the master house at La Bamba is built around the main courtyard, with a well-endowed library in the guard tower and a panoramic gallery opening onto the park.

The cottage, the house sheltered by a vine arbour, the stables, the summer dining room and the former inn make up the majority of the buildings that surround the casco.

Nestling in the midst of a magnificent park, this typical colonial style ensemble houses rooms and suites spread over three buildings, with several reception rooms, a billiard room, a bar, a massage room and a boutique.

A regional and refined culinary tradition, outstanding service, charm and character make La Bamba de Areco an essential stopping place in the province of Buenos Aires.

Rooms and suites

In the eleven rooms and suites at La Bamba, dark wooden floors, antique colonial furniture, art works, local textiles and modern art combine to create understated elegance and harmonious luxury.

Mariposa, Lalabai … each room is named after a famous polo horse. All non-smoking and air-conditioned, the rooms look out onto the park, shaded patios, the imposing pampa or the polo fields.

King-sized beds, fine Egyptian linen, safes for valuables and amenities for the discerning traveller are part of the hotel intuitive service. However, you will look in vain in the bedrooms for televisions or telephones that would disturb the romantic atmosphere of La Bamba…

Activites

Excursions on horseback, by carriage, or mountain bike, Argentinian bowls game, hot stone massages, the large swimming pool and the numerous relaxation areas offer the traveller an unforgettable restful experience and an incomparable way to restore energy.

La Bamba de Areco also serves as the base for the international polo team that bears its name. The property includes two polo fields and the guest can also watch games during the season, with practice sessions and matches taking place almost daily.

Although it is not intended to be a polo school, arrangements can be made on request for guests who are experienced polo players.

San Antonio de Areco, one of the oldest towns in Argentina, is located only 13km away and invites you to return to the eighteenth century with its narrow colonial streets, church, bars and museums.

Explore the soul and character of the gaucho at the Ricardo Guiraldes Gaucho Museum, whom the famous Argentine writer brought to life in his cult novel Don Segundo Sombra (1926).

Admire the master silversmiths at work in their workshop and marvel at the skill of the leather craftsmen. Heirs to Argentine tradition, these artists perpetuate the international fame of San Antonio de Areco.

Tradition & folklore

An active part of Argentine and especially gaucho heritage, La Bamba de Areco is proud to offer authentic gaucho traditions such as asados and mate tasting, and organizes as an option several gaucho shows which are private and unique: musical entertainment with folk dances, Indian horse-whispering, games of equestrian skill: patos, boleadors and sortija.

La Semana de la Fiesta de la Tradicion:
At the beginning of November, San Antonio de Areco welcomes thousands of gauchos from all over Argentina: this event, a real journey into Argentine history and heritage, is a unique opportunity to discover the Gaucho culture: equestrian parades, rodeos, horse-breaking demonstrations, folk dancing and concerts, craft markets.

FILMING IN LA BAMBA
Numerous films have been shot at La Bamba, including the Maria Luisa Bemberg’s masterpiece, Camila, which won the nomination for best foreign film in 1984.

El Gourmet has also been hosted at La Bamba for the programme Amigos x la Cocina, a culinary reality show involving a dozen famous chefs under the leadership of the eminent South American chef Francis Malman.
