About St. Lucia
Make the most of your stay at Ladera Resort

Thanks to its mountainous terrain and lush flora, St. Lucia’s beauty is unmatched by other Caribbean islands. Its culture is a unique fusion of French, British and African traditions, and its population of approximately 160,000 people brings the island’s beauty and rich heritage to life.

St. Lucia is 27 miles long by 14 miles wide (238 square miles). It is an independent member of the British Commonwealth.

While the official language is English, the lingua franca is a mellifluous, French-based Patois that employs African vocabulary and structures. Similarly, the local cuisine blends French and Island tradition with the freshest island ingredients.

St. Lucia Events
The most evident and exciting expression of St. Lucia’s culture is its festivals. Carnival is by far the biggest event, which takes place each year from the end of May through mid-July. Colorfully animated parties, calypso contests and parades radiate throughout the island.

Each Friday night, Ladera guests are invited to travel by boat (weather permitting) to the quaint fishing village of Anse Le Raye to enjoy a traditional village Fish Fry – which showcases the skills of local fishermen and the abundance of their catch.

One of St. Lucia’s fastest-growing events is the annual, very hip, St. Lucia Jazz Festival, which takes place in Castries. In addition to these spirited happenings, there are also many other places to visit throughout the island all year long.

St. Lucia Attractions
With quaint towns, beautiful beaches and bays, mineral baths, and banana plantations, you won’t tire of exploring St. Lucia. You can even visit a volcano. Ladera’s tour desk will be happy to help you plan your explorations.

The UNESCO World Heritage Piton Mountains

These two 3,000-foot volcanic peaks rising skyward from the Caribbean Sea are named Gros Piton and Petit Piton. In addition to guided hiking and mountain climbing tours, you will also find an Interpretive Center on Gros Piton, which offers information on local geography, geology, and plant life.

Diamond Botanical Gardens and Waterfall
Located in a protected valley at the base of the Pitons, this 2,000-acre site is home to the oldest botanical gardens on St. Lucia.

In addition to exploring a nature trail, a historic mill and a waterwheel, you can take a dip in the warm King Louis XVI Mineral Baths, which are believed to possess therapeutic and curative powers.

Sulphur Springs

Known as the world’s only “drive-in” volcano, Sulphur Springs features a road running right through the crater of the Soufrière Volcano, which roils with steam and sulfur and boiling mud and water bubbling just meters away from your window.

Pigeon Island National Landmark & Museum

Located about 90 minutes from the resort, this 44-acre nature reserve has been home to Amerindian tribes, pirates, 18th century French and British soldiers and fisherman throughout its history.

Today, the site features 18th century ruins and military fortifications, a museum and interpretation center, two small beaches, hiking trails and a lookout point atop 330-foot Signal Peak, where the sea views extend all the way to Martinique.

Marigot Bay

This scenic natural harbor is a favorite stopping port for boaters and a relaxing destination for visitors, with a collection of cozy restaurants and a marina village with a snack shop, grocery store, bakery, and shopping boutiques.

Sustainability & Conservation at Ladera
Create moments of a lifetime at Ladera Resort in St. Lucia. Yes, we boast the ideal luxury spot for romance but we are equally proud of our eco-friendly philosophy and commitment to sustainability.

With our unique location on a volcano ridgeline, 1,000 feet above the Caribbean Sea, each of our suites features an open-air design – without a fourth wall – allowing for breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Pitons. We are also situated on a 17 acre UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Award-winning Dasheene Restaurant features authentic St. Lucian cuisine. Chef Nigel Mitchel and his culinary team create culinary delights with local ingredients and local organically grown produce including fresh seafood delivered from nearby waters to the restaurant each morning. 70% of what is created in the Dasheene kitchen is from the island.

Take the Ladera Garden Tour to experience the fauna of St. Lucia and the fruit and spices incorporated into the dishes.

With Green Globe Certification, Ladera is unique. A resort committed to luxury service and amenities plus environmental sustainability. Our General Manager, Christian Gandara, has empowered the staff to create the “Ladera Green Team”.

Led by our sustainability champions, Eustace and Vernette, the team meets weekly to plan local actions including planting trees at a local school and doing road cleanup. We also regularly donate furniture and appliances to local nonprofit organizations.

You cannot miss the furniture, panel, and sculpture creations here at Ladera. These “living works of art” are the work of our three master craftsmen, Boniface, Eustace, and Eustachius.

They use tropical wood, tiles, and stones found on St. Lucia to create them at our onsite carpentry shop. Eustace, our Property & Maintenance Manager and champion of sustainability, has been here at Ladera for over 30 years and we can say that he built the resort with his bare hands!

Eustachius designed most of the furniture, including the beds, making them rare treasures for our guests to enjoy and a showcase for our eco-friendly commitment.

Ray, the Ladera Head Gardener, is a master of landscaping and the growing of fruit trees and exotic flowers. He shares his vast knowledge of and passion for St. Lucian flora and fauna while conducting educational garden tours for our guests.

He also oversees the organic garden that provides produce and herbs used at Dasheene. We aim to use as much of each product as possible so our coconuts are used for fresh coconut water, coconut meat in pastries, and the shells as garden borders to protect from erosion.

Plus leftover fruit is fed to birds, leftover bread to fish, and much of the rest is composted.

Eliminating single-use plastic water bottles is a top priority here at Ladera. We’ve partnered with JUST Water to help us reduce the amount of plastic waste at the resort by over 80,000 bottles in a single year!

JUST Water is 100% spring water packaged in a recyclable paper carton made from FSC-certified forest trees which are responsibly harvested and the cap is made from sugarcane. We have also eliminated plastic straws and provide reusable items like cloth napkins and glass cups with food service.

In our accommodations, you will only find cruelty-free products and we use cleaning products from Ecolab. Even our yoga mats are eco-friendly!

Conserving water and energy are part of everyday practice here at Ladera. Our rain harvesting program captures and stores rainwater used for our landscape irrigation system. We use solar water heaters for the hot water in the suites and kitchen and have replaced bulbs with LED lights.

We also observe the global “Earth Hour” every March by turning off all non-essential lights at the resort for one hour. You can help us with this by being aware of your energy and water usage while staying in one of our luxury suites.

Discover the essence of the romantic paradise that is Ladera St. Lucia. It is in our lush garden and immaculate landscaping, our furniture made from local hardwoods, and our amazing staff with their passion for the island and sustaining it.

Experience it with a guided hike along the volcanic ridge, a visit to the market in Soufriere to pick up local ingredients, or a tour of the expansive garden. We can’t wait to welcome you and share our love of St. Lucia with you.
