The Lasala Plaza Hotel is housed in a building dating back to 1917, completely renovated yet preserving its original architectural characteristics. TABERNA LA JARANA
Not only does it sound like fun, it’s also an invitation to party: jarana (meaning ‘shindig’). “San Sebastián has things you won’t find anywhere else the world”, goes the song. It even has a district going by the name of “de la Jarana”.
And not just any old district: its port. The spot where San Sebastián is at its most playful, intriguing and entertaining. A port where all of the different “Donostias” come together. A port which has served down the years as the door for the coming and going of goods, ideas and, above all, people.
It’s from here that the whalers would leave and where the ships bringing the new goods from America, like chocolate and potato, would arrive. It’s the space where the arrantzales (fishermen in Basque) would unload their catches and where the women would repair their nets.
Today locals and tourists mingle there as they take a stroll. The port looks out over the bay as an essential picture postcard feature, yet maintains its own, rebellious personality.
And in September it turns into a platform for the longboat races, the rowing Olympics converting San Sebastián into the most beautiful of regatta settings.
Jarana. It sounds like fun. Enjoyment, meeting people, partying, freedom, friends, the promise of happiness. And, from that jarana packed with history, to that never-ending jarana, a bar is born, an open Jarana where you can eat, drink, meet people and, above all, be happy. Or at least, you can try.
