Nestled in a cluster of small islands on Lake Tanganyika, Lupita Island is a remote, unspoiled private island occupying 110 acres of uninhabited space.

The resort offers luxurious, comfortable, mostly private accommodation that allows guests to relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. The resort offers top notch facilities like fine dining options, gymnasium, spa, swimming pool, games room, bar & lounge, boma and a beach shack.

There are many activities that cater to all interests and age groups including hiking, kayaking, swimming & snorkelling, watersports, fishing, etc. The nearby village and Kipili monastery allow guests to explore and experience the local culture.

Our Cottages
Lupita Island Resort has ten uniquely crafted cottages, which all benefit from breathtaking lake and mountain views seen from their open verandas, making the most of the balmy breezes and memorable sunsets.

Dotted amongst a tropical forest of indigenous trees, the property strives to leave as little mark on the natural environment as possible. Our smallest cottages are 1800 square feet and our two-bedroom, two-bath family suite is 2500 square feet.

The resort design features undulating roofs thatched from local grasses, and the lakeside of each room is completely open-air, so you can enjoy the lake breeze and soak in your natural surroundings.

As you relax under our refreshing waterfall showers, life’s stresses simply melt away. Each villa includes bathtubs and plunge pools on either the deck or terrace, as well as a bar and large living area, ideal for relaxation or entertaining.

Deluxe cottage
Each of our de luxe cottages boasts spacious living while you stay on Lupita Island. Completely private with open plan design, with a large bathroom and open air bath with a waterfall shower. The deluxe cottages have a king sized bed or two large singles.

They have the option of adding two smaller childrens beds or a bunk beds for a family of 4. Enjoy an ice cold wine from your private bar in your sitting room, while lying next to your plunge pool for those times when you want to relax alone or with your partner. All with amazing views across the lake.

Family cottage
Lupita Island Resort has a large family cottage with two bathrooms and 2 bedroom areas. Larger than the deluxe cottages it has a bedroom with a King sized bed and private bathroom and a second sleeping area away from the adults also with their own private bathroom.

A large open plan sitting room and bar and outdoor veranda and plunge pool. Meals can be delivered and served by waiters to the cottage for those special evenings when families may want to celebrate something special in the luxury of their own suite.

Our Island
In 2004 we acquired Lupita Island, a deserted island 5 kms off the mainland. It was thick bush and foliage with beautiful trees and not much more so we had a blank slate to work with. Construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2008.

Wherever possible, we have utilised locally-sourced thatching, wood products and African antiques. We brought in experienced tradesmen from the cities and worked closely with local people around the islands teaching them new trades of which today they are now the ones we call on to help with our maintenance.

We consider the lodge as rustic luxury. Straight lines and perfect symmetry are not part of the vocabulary here.

The Lodge Bar
Relax with a refreshing cocktail at our Dhow bar, made of boats once used on the water now a glorious setting for the sunset over the lake each day. Situated close to the main dining room, and just below the fabulous newly built viewing deck, high above the main areas.

Let our friendly bar staff mix you a cutomised Lupita cocktail of your choice. As the sun sets over the lake take a stroll to our boma just a stones throw from the bar, fire lit under the stars. Enjoy your evening under the stars before dinner with delicious canapes brought to you by one of our waiters.

Beach Bar
Our private beach and beach bar are a great hit with all ages. Sun loungers and umbrellas are set up throughout the day for guests to use whenever they feel they would like to enjoy the lake from a different place.

Cold drinks are readily available and kayaks and snorkeling equipment are easily on hand at any time. Enjoy an evening or lunchtime BBq organised on special balmy days and nights, while local fishing boats with their lanterns twinkle across the lake.

Pool
Just a short walk from the main area our large freshwater main pool can be found. Laze under thatched umbrellas soaking up the wonderful African sun, with an ice-cool cocktail of your choice, ordered from the pool bar.

Or swim up to the thatched water bar to cool down after relaxing in the heat. For privacy and tranquility, the pool is set away from the main area.

Spa
Set high on the hillside of Lupita Island, our spa and wellness centre has magnificent views of Lake Tanganyika and the neighbouring mountains. Balancing the rustic grace of the natural landscape with modern salon facilities, the spa offers classic aesthetic treatments using essential oils and trusted massage techniques.

Natural treatments with our experienced therapist will renew and hydrate your skin and feed your soul – a wonderful treat after a long day in the sun.

Our Food
Cooling breezes flow through Lupita’s open dining room, sitting at the highest point of the island. The calm ambiance and extraordinary view of the lake delights the eye, but it is our menu of fresh fish – delicious grilled Nile perch and a creatively seasoned Kuwe straight from the lake – that satisfies the palate.

Our chefs specialize in modern African cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients and always accompanied by our delicious desserts. One of the days we will organize a catered buffet on the beach a special treat enjoyed by all.

We can arrange a romantic dinner in your room or by your pool. Dine alfresco under the amazing canope of stars on the main pool deck. With no more than 28 guests on the island at any time, dining is always an intimate experience.

Meals may be taken in our convivial open-air restaurant – a charming thatched dining room, which is lit by candles at night as we serve three or four course dinners. For a more casual affair, lunch or dinner may be set up by the pool or around the bar.

Activities
Lupita Island is an ideal place to relax and recharge before heading back into the real world, so the schedule is open here, allowing guests to spend the days however they like. There are many choices to do as much or as little as is desired.

Lake Tanganyika’s waters are clear and calm, providing the ultimate setting for water sport activities. Kayaks and canoes are available to guests to explore beaches around the islands.

Snorkeling and PADI-certified scuba diving is available to take you to the underwater world of Lake Tanganyika, teeming with hundreds of species of cichlids found nowhere else on earth.

Ancient Monastery
Visit the remains of a monastery in Kipili, built around the 1860’s by the ItalianWhite Fathers. Missionaries bought slaves to save and hide them and also adopted orphans.

The old Kipili monastery is an amazing feat of engineering. Every brick and every nail was made by hand and lovingly built to make a monastery church, dormitories, refectory and the missionary housing for the religious order.

It was not an easy life for these intrepid fathers, disease and malaria played a big part in reducing the numbers of the people at the settlement. Built on the hillside overlooking Kipili Bay, it can be seen tcked away in the thivk treeline. A fascinating visit just 15 minutes drive from the mianland jetty.

Beach Buffet
Join us for a wonderful fun-filled day on a private beach. Spend an afternoon relaxing on the sands or snorkelling around the nearby rocks. A fully catered beach buffet is laid out on white table cloths with wines of your choice or cocktails mixed to order by our experienced barman.

Laze in the crystal clear waters while you sip your sparkling wine. Watch the sun set on the horizon as you slowly make your way back to Lupita by wooden lake boat.

Sunset Cruise
Windsor Rose is our grand old lady of the lake. The 46 ft cruise boat was built in the early 1980s and brought to Lake Tanganyika overland from Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe.

Fish from the deck, dive into the mile-deep water, or simply enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails watching the sunset over the lake’s water. Ice cold drinks and canapes are brought to you by the boat stewards while you laze on board or swim in a mile of water off the bough.

Enjoy a sunset cruise on the top decks while slowly making your way around the island.

Kayaking
Our two-man kayaks make a great way to explore the islands from a different perspective, with amazing visibility into the depths. Why not paddle out to a beach picnic set out for you by our staff. Keep an eye out for sea otters!

Snorkeling, swimming, diving.
Take off for a leisurely swim in the warm shallows or snorkel along one of the island’s many hidden coves teeming with brightly coloured cichlids native to the lake. Currents are minimal and the visibility excellent. Snorkeling and PADI-certified scuba diving is available to take you to the underwater world of Lake Tanganyika.

Snorkelling in Lake Tanganyika is an experience like non other. No sticky salty water to wash off afterwards, just silky soft skin in temperatures that hover around 25 degrees all year round. Crystal clear water as far as the eye can see.

Fishing
Try your hand at fishing the old-fashioned way, with a hand line and an oar accompanied by an expert local fisherman in his wooden boat. Or, go all out on a speedboat and fish with rods and equipment.

Fresh water fish in Lake Tanganyika are probably the healthiest fish in the world. No pollution just big fat healthy fish.

Spa and Gym
High on the hillside of Lupita Island is the spa and wellness centre with magnificent views of Lake Tanganyika and the neighbouring mountains.

Balancing the rustic grace of the natural landscape with the relaxing salon facilities, the spa offers classic treatments using essential oils and trusted massage techniques. Natural treatments with our experienced therapist will renew and hydrate your skin and feed your soul – a wonderful treat after a long day in the sun.

For the more energetic, enjoy our strategically placed open sided gym at one of the higher points of the island. Allowing for wonderful breezes as you work out on our extensive gym equpment.

Games room
Our games room is a great hit with teenagers and adults alike. A pool table, a foosball table and table tennis, not to mention the darts are available for use at any time.

Plan a tournament with the family or just a knockabout with friends before dinner. A variety of board games are on hand for those quiet evenings when the day’s activities have mellowed your energy for the day.

Pool and pool bar
Laze around our lovely freshwater pool under the African skies, with an ice-cool cocktail of your choice, ordered from the pool bar. Or swim up to the water bar to cool down after relaxing in the sun. For privacy and tranquility, the pool is set away from the main area for privacy.

Village choir
Totally independent and proud of their singing, the Kipili church choir has been visiting Lupita since we first opened in 2008 . Between 20 and 30 men and women of varying ages sing traditional songs and perform African dances, choreographed by a lively leader.

Over the years they have managed to save enough donations to build up their church building in Kipili village. Their performance is a unique treat for our guests.

Safaris
We have been providing personalized luxury safaris in Tanzania since 1989. We can confidently recommend some great choices of luxury tented safari camps and lodges from all over the country.

Most of the camps have their own open sided customized safari vehicles affording fabulous game viewing of the African wildlife. Experience the thrill of finding huge herds of elephant and buffalo while game viewing.

Also see prides of lions lying in the shade of an acacia tree after a nights hunt. All part of the “big five” just waiting to be explored. Follow the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra on the Serengeti plains.
