Take a deep breath of the fresh air and pinch yourself – no, you’re not dreaming…This is Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka offering a revolutionary and contemporary concept to the traditional warmth and hospitality that Sri Lanka is famous for.

Nestled on a picturesque tea plantation, on the Knuckles Mountain Range 1000 meters above sea level, Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge will treat travelers to magnificent views, top class facilities, friendly and courteous service and plenty of things to see and do.

Location

Located on a picturesque 25 acre tea plantation just 30 km away from Sri Lanka’s hill capital of Kandy and approximately 150 km away from Colombo, Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge commands a majestic view of the UNESCO World Heritage Knuckles Mountain Range – so called due to its shape similar to the knuckles of a clenched fist.

The quaint little hamlet of Madulkelle with it colourful and happy people is just 1.5 km away. The village is inhabited mainly by Tamils of Indian origin, originally brought down to Sri Lanka in the late 1800s by the British planters to help them with their tea plantations.

The Madulkelle village is a typical Sri Lankan town featuring a hospital, post office, schools and plenty of shops catering to the basic needs of its residents.

The close proximity of the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge to Kandy makes it an ideal location from which to explore not only the historic town of Kandy, but also attractions such as the Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya as well as the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela.

All lodges are made of high quality tarpaulin canvas specially imported from South Africa. This is the very same material used by many world renowned safari camps especially in campsites all over Africa. Each lodge at the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge can hold a maximum of 3 people

Kandy City
Sri Lanka’s hill capital of Kandy is nestled picturesquely surrounded by mountains and rivers just 115 km away from Colombo and just 30 km away from the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge.

Kandy features the most sacred of all Buddhist shrines – the temple of the tooth or The Dalada Maligawa, which holds the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha. This is also the location in which the annual Esala Perahera, one of the most sought after and popular cultural pageants in the world, takes place.

Other popular attractions in and around Kandy include the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the picturesque Victoria Golf Course and the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela.

Dambulla and Sigiriya
The historic city of Dambulla is just a 2 hour drive away from the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge and features the Golden Temple and the Dambulla Rock. The caves on this rock feature a mixture of religious and worldly paintings and sculptures.

A 3 hour drive from the Madullkelle Tea and Eco Lodge will take you to Sigiriya or the Lion Rock which is considered by many as the 8th wonder of the ancient world.

This magnificent rock fortress built in the 5th century A.D. by King Kasyapa is world-renowned for its ‘Mirror Wall’ consisting of poems and text carved by those who visited the rock many years ago and for its magnificent frescoes, similar to the Ajantha frescoes of India.

Tea Plantation/ Factory Visit
Unravel the mysteries and discover the secrets that go into making that perfect cup of Ceylon tea. Find out how the tea leaves plucked by the female estate workers are sorted and processed into making Sri Lanka’s favourite beverage.

Hiking and Trekking

More than 120 bird species have been sighted here including endemic species such as the Yellow-Fronted Barbet, Dusky-Blue Flycatcher, Ceylon Lorikeet, Ceylon Grackle, Yellow-Eared Bulbul and Layard’s Parakeet.
