History
At the turn of the century hotels dotted the New England coastline, inviting guests to escape the heat of the cities and spend their summers by the sea. Famously known for its warm yellow facade and stunning views of the Atlantic, the Rhode Island Ocean House opened in 1868 just after the Civil War.

For those who could afford the luxury of travel, Ocean House became the quintessential summer home attracting many distinguished guests in the early 1900s.

The grand Victorian hotel was a genteel resort on the beach where generations of families and guests from across America came “to summer.” In fact, in 1916 Ocean House was immortalized in the silent movie American Aristocracy, starring Douglas Fairbanks.

Ocean House welcomed guests for 135 years, but as with many historic hotels, over time, neglect took its toll. The Ocean House was closed in 2003 when it was deemed beyond feasible repair. In 2004 a new structure replicating the original exterior design was conceived.

Today, this much-loved beach hotel has been recreated to convey the romance of its storied past and the rich character of Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The new resort features 49 rooms and 18 Signature Suites, providing more spacious accommodations than the original structure, which offered 159 rooms.

Viewed from the outside, all of the resort’s 247 windows remain in their original positions. More than 5,000 salvageable artifacts and furnishing elements were lovingly harvested from the original structure’s historic interior.

Ocean House’s 13 acres of beautiful oceanfront landscape overlook a 650-foot private white-sand beach with views of Montauk, Block Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Within the expansive grounds of the hotel, you’ll find much to enjoy.

Accommodations
Each of the Ocean House’s 49 guestrooms and 20 Signature Suites is inspired by our Rhode Island resort’s magnificent oceanfront setting, high atop a bluff overlooking Block Island Sound.

Comfortable, soothing and spacious, our accommodations are beautifully appointed with turn-of-the-20th-century décor complete with custom wooden furnishings, a muted color scheme and early New England artwork.

Up Up & Away Cottage

A short drive from Ocean House, Up Up & Away is a bright, airy, multi-level retreat that provides renters complete privacy.

This custom-built 7 bedroom, 8 full and 2 half-bath home (plus bunk room with four twin beds) features luxurious furnishings, spacious accommodations, and impressive outdoor living space, with a heated infinity pool and seasonal, outdoor fireplace and grill to be enjoyed on summer nights.

The first floor begins with an intimate entrance, leading to an inviting living space with coffered ceilings and built-in bookshelves, as well as a formal dining room. This leads into a large eat-in kitchen, den and wet bar area.

The chef-inspired kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances, a large pantry, gorgeous stone countertops, and an oversized island, with a large eat-in dining area and wet bar complimenting the space. A grand adjoining living area is equipped with an integrated sound system, seasonal, gas fireplace, and abundant seating

The first-floor master bedroom features a king-size bed, en suite bathroom, and a stunning walk-in closet, plus laundry. The second floor has four bedrooms with king-size beds, a bunk room with four twin beds, convenient laundry room, and excellent closet space—all accessible by elevator.

The large lower level provides both entertaining and lodging space, with a pool table with a sitting area, a media room and two additional bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as additional laundry facilities.

Signature Suites
Our studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom Signature Suites at our Rhode Island beach hotel go above and beyond to offer you the ultimate in coastal New England luxury. Every luxurious suite is individually decorated, each one offering a unique take on seaside sophistication.

Beach Stone Suite

The Beach Stone Suite, with soothing neutral tones and relaxed feel, is a welcoming retreat from the moment you enter. This expansive and peaceful Rhode Island resort space features oversized picture windows offering majestic, uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The living room features a beach stone, floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and skylight ceiling. In the kitchen, state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances complement a breakfast bar that seats three and a generous dining room table, making it perfect for in-suite dining and entertaining.

This hotel suite includes multiple bedrooms. The master bedroom features a king-size bed, a full bathroom with double vanity, and large walk-in shower with beach stone floor. French doors in the master bedroom lead to the outdoor terrace.

The guest room also includes a king-size bed, as well as a full bathroom finished with marble-surrounded combination shower and bathtub.

A sleeping alcove, with a pocket door to separate it from the main living room, has two twin beds, a television, closet storage and an additional third full bathroom with a walk-in shower with built-in seat and beach stone floor. This room offers suitable accommodations for adults as well as children.

The suite has a large terrace with beautiful, direct ocean views, and is perfect for entertaining or just relaxing. It offers private access to the beach path and is equipped with its own private outdoor shower. There is a laundry closet with washer and dryer in the suite.

A more spacious alternative to our standard guestrooms, each of our luxury hotel suites offers elegant accommodation and fine touches including beds with 400-thread count embroidered linens, Alashan throw blankets, and foam and 100% goose down pillows.

Sunday Jazz Brunch
This plated, à la carte menu changes every week, with all the abundance and flair that guests expect from the Ocean House Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Start with an impressive tower of charcuterie and raw bar offerings for the table, then choose from breakfast dishes and savory lunch preparations, including eggs Benedict, specialty pancakes, country link sausage, and omelets with an imaginative twist. Plus unlimited sparkling wine.

The Bistro
At Ocean House, our classic American Bistro menu invites guests and visitors to enjoy casual, seasonally inspired dishes. Cuisine
Our restaurant has a classic American brasserie menu with an emphasis on featured seasonal ingredients found in our local Westerly and the surrounding area. We offer traditional club specialty items including grilled meats and inspired sides.

Gondola Village
Our winter private dining experience opened to coverage from Food & Wine, Departures and Forbes magazines—plus millions of impressions on social media.

This season, this luxuriously cozy private dining venue has been reimagined to transport guests to the French Alps, with delightful in-gondola lunch, dinner and “après ski” pre-dinner menus.

Also new this season is the addition of “Celebration du Soleil,” a cozy fireside sunset experience featuring truffle popcorn and other morsels along with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne.

The Experience

For lunch, dinner and après ski, guests will arrive on Ocean House’s North Lawn to enter one of our fully restored vintage ski gondolas for a private dining experience with a personal server.

Each gondola has been outfitted with warm woods, fine textiles, chandeliers and sophisticated Le Creuset tableware, surrounded by an enchanting winter wonderland.

For “Celebration du Soleil,” guests will be led to the their reserved chairs by the fire, overlooking the sunset. Each of theses unforgettable experiences is perfect for a romantic rendezvous for two or a warm gathering of friends.

In-Gondola Dining

Enjoy a warming four-course meal with a selection of French cuisine, including brie cheese flambé, boeuf bourguignon or white mushroom stew, among other dishes. Each guest is welcomed with a signature Veuve Clicquot cocktail.

Après Ski
This perfect pre-dinner experience allows guests to enjoy a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne alongside delicacies from a specially crafted menu of light bites, including local oysters with caviar.

Celebration du Soleil
An inviting experience with reserved chair seating around the fire pit and sunset views, featuring savory truffle popcorn, warm marinated olives and salted almonds with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne.

The Verandah Raw Bar
A favorite area for visiting guests during the summer, The Verandah sweeps across the south facade of Ocean House. The outdoor terrace of this Rhode Island seafood restaurant overlooks the pristine croquet court, which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Little Narragansett Bay.

Fresh shellfish from nearby waters — succulent oysters, clams and crab claws — are shucked to order at our traditional New England raw oyster bar. The menu also includes savory light items such as a daily ceviche and an assortment of delicious sandwiches.

With oversized chairs and low tables, The Verandah beckons you to relax and enjoy a brisk cocktail paired with a heavenly bite as you watch the waves crash along the shoreline. A full raw bar and menu of traditional Rhode Island and New England specialties, including soups, salads and sandwiches.

Dune Cottage
This Rhode Island beach restaurant offers stunning ocean views from beneath a shaded pergola on our private beach—creating a dramatic setting for lunch on a seasonal basis.

Reserved for resort guests and members, the atmosphere at this beachside restaurant has a casual elegance and offers a simple, yet sophisticated Mediterranean–inspired menu. An outdoor kitchen offers fresh, brick-oven pizzas, salads, sandwiches and grilled skewers.

The Taco Shack
Head down to The Taco Shack on the Ocean House beach to experience our newest al fresco culinary adventure.

Pick up some delicious gourmet tacos—beef barbacoa or grilled jerk chicken—and an array of drinks and cocktails made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The best part? You’ll hop on one of our new blender bikes to blend up your own frozen “Tito Rita” or other delicious summer frozen cocktails!

Below Deck
Below Deck is a candy and ice cream shop that also serves a whimsical assortment of goods, merging our passion for sweets with sundries and all things summer.

Conveniently located along the walking path to the Ocean House beach, the indoor/outdoor Rhode Island dessert eatery and retail space offers 10 flavors of decadent gelato, over-the-top sundaes and milkshakes and old-fashioned candy.

On your way to the beach, browse a curated collection of retail items like luxury swimwear and cover-ups, sunscreen, reading material and more.

Secret Garden Crêperie
The Secret Garden experience has been reimagined as a delightful crêperie, seamlessly intertwining luxury, outdoor dining and a bit of whimsy.

Available for day guests and as a spectacular private dining and event space, the delectable menu—inspired by the distinctive yellow-golden hue of Veuve Clicquot’s trademark color—includes honeyed apricot & orange marmalade crêpes and peach, cinnamon and thyme crêpes.

Amid lush boxwood hedges and unobstructed ocean vistas guests can also enjoy the jubilant Veuve Clicquot champagne cocktails that helped put the Secret Garden on the map as a magnifique dining destination unlike any other.

Lobster Boils & BBQs

Family-Style Picnic Menu
Ocean House is pleased to provide the option of a personalized three-course private picnic dinner.

Hotel guests and Ocean House Club Members may choose from a wonderful selection of starters, mains, sides and desserts–plus wine, beer and other beverages–to be delivered to their room or picked up at the Bistro for dinner nightly. Meet the Food Forager & Director of Culinary Education, Chef James McNamee
Chef James McNamee is the Director of the Culinary Center at Ocean House. In his position, he creates and leads culinary classes and activities for the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA) at Ocean House.

Chef James joins Ocean House with several years of international culinary experience. In 2018, Chef James was a Demi-Chef de Partie under the leadership of Sylvestre Wahid at Restaurant Sylvestre, the two-star Michelin establishment at Hôtel Thoumieux in Paris, France.

He later served as a chef at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée, a three-star Michelin restaurant in Hôtel Plaza Athénée. Chef James was also a private chef on the Island of Crete, creating daily breakfast, four-course lunch, and five-course dinner menus with produce from local farmers.

Chef James is a native of New England who attended The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

Meet the Director of Wine, Jonathan Feiler
Jonathan Feiler is Group Director of Wine for Ocean House Management Collection, including the Forbes Five-Star Ocean House, the award winning Weekapaug Inn, Watch Hill Inn and Inn at Hastings Park.

Under Feiler’s direction, the Ocean House wine collection includes selections from the most important growing regions and hidden gems from around the world, allowing Ocean House to offer a comprehensive hands-on wine experience that is both approachable and unpretentious for the casual wine drinker and the connoisseur alike.

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Feiler has extensive experience with food and a profound passion for wine. He began his professional career at Maison Robert in Boston where the world of wine first piqued his interest.

His career accelerated at the renowned Commanders Palace in New Orleans where he was quickly promoted from Captain to Sommelier of their sister restaurant, Café Adelaide. Feiler moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he took the position of Sommelier at Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare at the Wynn Resort, a Forbes Four-Star restaurant. When Encore Las Vegas opened, Feiler was promoted to Wine Manager at the Sinatra Restaurant.

There he received a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for his extensive Italian-focused wine list. After being away from the East Coast for more than 10 years, Feiler returned home to his roots.

Prior to his current position at Ocean House, he served as the Director of Wine Education, Head Sommelier and Director of Food & Beverage at Ocean House. He was also the fine wine business development manager for Rhode Island Distributing.

Feiler rejoined the Ocean House organization in October 2018, where he oversees the wine and beverage program and practices a wine philosophy centered on versatility and approachability. He also is responsible for a full program of beverage education classes for individuals and groups.

Pool
Facing Seaside Terrace’s sun deck, and the ocean beyond, the Ocean House’s heated, salt-water lap pool is located on the lower level of the hotel adjacent to the OH! Spa. The two-lane indoor pool is available 24 hours per day, year round.

Adult swim hours are from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week. Towels are provided in the pool area and goggles are available at the OH! Spa Reception desk for use. The pool is open to guests of all ages; guests under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Fitness Center
The Ocean House’s fitness facility offers a wide array of cardiovascular machines, strength-training options and inspiring fitness classes to discover your inner strength.

Featuring state-of-the-art TechnoGym cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, the luxury Fitness Center allows you to maintain your personal fitness regimen during your stay.

Each cardio machine is outfitted with individual media and music centers to captivate your mind during a vigorous workout. The Fitness Center of our Rhode Island beach resort is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Movement and Yoga Studio

Yachting
Experience the natural beauty of our coastline aboard our classic motor and sailing yachts. From late May to early October, Ocean House offers four extraordinary and very different boats for your New England yacht chartering experience.

Croquet
Ocean House’s championship croquet lawn overlooking the Atlantic Ocean offers a beautifully manicured course ideal for traditional six-wicket croquet. Our Croquet Lawn is championship quality bent grass greens and has been laser leveled and designed according to regulation standards.

With guidance from our on-site croquet professional, Stephen Morgan, our Croquet Lawn is a magical gathering space for family and friends to participate in this timeless Rhode Island activity that can be enjoyed at every age and skill level.

With the sea below you and the gentle ocean breezes to keep you cool, the Ocean House Croquet Lawn is the ideal location to practice or polish your croquet skills.

Squash
Dating back to the 1800s, squash is a fast-paced, two-player racquet sport that requires dexterity, strategy and a keen eye, and provides players with a great workout. At Ocean House, we offer two championship-level ASB squash courts, the worldwide specialist in high quality courts.

Open throughout the day, the luxurious Rhode Island squash room offers a comfortable seating area for resort guests and members to relax or watch a match.

During the summer, our weekly complimentary Intro to Squash class will give you all the instruction you need to learn the ins and outs of the game. Work on strokes, movements and techniques in this hands-on clinic.

Indoor squash courts are open year-round and available for rent through the OH! Spa. Racquets, goggles and shoes are also available for rent. Please note that proper squash attire is required.

Biking
Ocean House sits in the midst of one of the country’s most scenic coastal areas. With short distances between many points of interest, and easily ridden flat coastal planes as well as rolling New England hills, biking in Watch Hill provides a variety of routes for everyone to enjoy; from “casual” riders to “hammerhead” road cyclists.

Ocean House offers avid golfers the chance to play exclusive courses, all less than 30 minutes from the resort.

The Mountain Course at the Preserve Sporting Club
Guests of Ocean House have special access to golf and other experiences at the Preserve Sporting Club & Residences, a short drive inland from Watch Hill. This 3,500 acre, world-class sporting resort is the newest addition to the Ocean House Management Collection.

Experience golf on the championship Mountain Course. Carved from an untamed American wilderness that challenges your skills, engages your mind, and touches your heart, the course was designed by award-winning golf architect Robert McNeil and the Northeast Golf Company.

The 18-hole, par 3 course, along with its hybrid cross country par 34 configuration, stand as two of the most challenging yet playable executive courses in the Northeast.

Lake of Isles
Only a short drive away, Lake of Isles has been recognized by both professional and recreational golfers as one of the premiere golf courses in New England and has consistently been ranked among the top golf facilities in the country.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, this facility includes 36 unique holes carved from the natural topography that surrounds the 90-acre Lake of Isles.

Featuring a public 18-hole North Course and a private 18-hole South Course, Lake of Isles offers guests the opportunity to test their golf skills over two challenging layouts. Aside from the 7,300-yard private South Course, the 50,000-square-foot clubhouse at Lake of Isles is also open to Ocean House guests.

Cut deep into the side of a high hill overlooking the lake, the clubhouse showcases rustic Craftsman design with cedar shake siding, stone pillars and entry towers.

Fishing
With the Atlantic Ocean right in our backyard, we are able to offer exceptional opportunities for fishing in Rhode Island. From fishing charters with your family to fly fishing on the beach with your corporate group, there are options for every level of skill and interest.

On-Shore Fly Fishing
Ed Lombardo has been fly fishing in Rhode Island and Connecticut waters for more than 40 years and is the resident pro at Addieville East Hunting Club and Alton Jones.

He offers instruction in how to tie flies, how to cast, and what flies to use depending on season, tides and fish. He will tailor his instruction to the proficiency level of the guests, and guide them to nearby ocean waters for a three-hour, half-day or full-day fishing experience.

Private Fishing Charters
Spend a day with Captain Tom Pitasi of Coastal Fishing Charters and let him show you the best fishing Rhode Island has to offer. Target striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore.

From the famous Watch Hill Reefs to the rocky shores of Fishers Island and the white sandy beaches of the Rhode Island coast, you can enjoy great fishing within sight of Ocean House. Fly or light tackle, beginner to expert, all skill levels and children are welcome.

Fish in comfort aboard a 26-foot center–console powered by twin Yamaha 200 HPDIs and loaded with Raymarine E-Wide Hybrid Widescreen Multifunction Displays that include GPS Chart Plotter, Digital Fish Imaging and HD Digital Radar, Rhode Island’s Coastal Fishing Charters has all the tools to get you to the fish and back safely.

Tennis
Ocean House maintains an exclusive membership at Pond View Racquet and Paddle Club. At Pond View, just minutes from the resort, guests can enjoy four Har-Tru outdoor tennis courts, three hard indoor tennis courts, two outdoor paddle/platform tennis courts as well as private instruction.

Pro Shop
Pond View’s Pro Shop carries a full line of Wilson and Babolat racquet, grips, and accessories. We carry Nike, Lija, and Fila men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, as well as Babolat and K.Swiss adult and junior sneakers.

Demo racquets and ball hoppers are available for rent from the pro shop. Custom racquet stringing and new grips can be delivered within 24 hours.

Private Lessons and Clinics
Pond View offers one-on-one, half-hour or hour-long private lessons for adults and juniors. Group clinics are also offered, for groups of three or four players (adult or junior) with a teaching pro for half-hour or hour-long sessions. In addition, you may reserve your own court time.
