WINE
How could we call ourselves Relais Paradiso if we didn’t have a strong divine element? In a dream like this, where you eat what you touch; in a land like this, where vines with the most refined aromas are born, even wine wants its part, and what a part!

The principle is the same: to take care of every bunch of grapes from when it appears on the tower to when it is placed in the box. In this we operate as the little peasant. Only we do it on a large scale, as there are more than 10 hectares surrounding our wellness relais that are cultivated with vines.

The winery we turn to cultivates these soils for us in the way it used to, collecting grapes by hand, not using sulphites and following the ancient wine-making recipes.

ROSSO DEL PODERE (IGT)
Produced from a skilful blend of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, fermentation takes place with the maceration of the skins and then refines in steel tanks. The final refinement is done in the bottle.

Intense red color with aromas of ripe red fruits and spicy notes, soft taste and high tannic structure. Suggested pairing: red meats, game and mature cheeses. Serving temperature: 18-20 ° C.

BIANCO DEL PODERE (IGT)
Elegant wine of great personality and structure, produced from white grapes. After fermentation, it is left to rest in steel barrels and then finally refined in the bottle. The color of this Umbria Bianco is straw yellow with golden notes. Suggested pairing: with appetizers, white meats and spicy or blue cheeses. Serving temperature 10-12 ° C.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
Wellness, the focus of our Health Project, is as smooth as oil with our appealing wholesome products. Of course our olives come from the park surrounding the hotel, and are cold-pressed in the mill to obtain a richer and more genuine product.

Oil is decanted the natural way in stainless steel tanks. Such process enhances the features of our light green, fruity scented, slightly bitter, extra virgin olive oil – the king of your diet.

UMBRIA
Our Relais is located in a green oasis in the heart of Umbria, not far from Perugia, Assisi and the other most beautiful towns. Our relais with outdoor swimming pool and Spa is situated in a peaceful natural oasis in the heart of Umbria, more precisely, in Via dei Castelli 5, in Gualdo Cattaneo (PG).

PERUGIA
There are so many reasons to visit Perugia, Umbria’s capital and cultural hub. Any time on your wellness holiday at Relais Paradiso is great for planning a relaxing day trip to visit Perugia and its countless treasures.

The town was founded, and rapidly developed thanks to its strategic position on a hilltop, in Etruscan days. Quick expansion and defensive needs called for mighty walls (still standing today) as early as in the 4th century BC.

Perugia is very famous also beyond the national boundaries. In fact, it is home to the longest-estabilished and most important Italian University for Foreigners, which endows the town with a multicultural atmosphere and lively day and nightlife.

Squares, monuments, museums and scenic views, Perugia deserves to be visited without rush:

  • Piazza IV Novembre square with the Fontana Maggiore fountain, surrounded by Palazzo dei Priori palace and San Lorenzo Cathedral.
  • The Etruscan walls and gates (Etruscan Arch, Marzia, Trasimena and Sole Gate), and the medieval walls and gates (Sant’Angelo, San Pietro, Santa Susanna)
  • Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo palace
  • Palazzo Gallenga Stuart palace (seat of the University for Foreigners)
  • Teatro Morlacchi theatre
  • Basilica of San Domenico, Umbria’s largest church
  • Corso Vannucci, Perugia’s most elegant street, which connects Piazza IV Novembre square to Piazza Italia square

ASSISI
From the devotion to St. Francis to the stunning centre: spending a day in Assisi. Just 40 km from our relais with swimming pool and Spa, Assisi is another opportunity you can add to your Umbrian holiday.

In addition to its wealth of gems, Assisi undoubtedly owes its international reputation to its most famous son: St. Francis of Assisi, the first Saint in the history of the Church and Patron Saint of Italy.

By far the most popular destination in Assisi. Since 1230 this church has enshrined the remains of St. Francis: another reason for deserving the UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The basilica is made up of two parts:

  • The Basilica Inferiore (Lower Basilica) with the crypt containing the remains of St. Francis
  • The Basilica Superiore (Upper Basilica) built after the Lower as an out-and-out pilgrimage destination. The mid level of the aisle is covered in remarkable and large depictions representing the Stories of St. Francis.

Attractions in Assisi also include:

  • Basilica of Santa Chiara. Home to the remains of the famous saint who followed in St. Francis’ footsteps and stood out as a charismatic figure in Assisi.
  • Rocca Maggiore. Built around 1173, it was the main fort defending Assis for centuries. It can still be visited and, with its view of the valley, is worth the effort to reach it.
  • Piazza del Comune square. Very interesting, as it is one of the few lay sites in Assisi.
  • Temple of Minerva. The so-called Temple of Minerva overlooks Piazza del Comune square. Built in Roman days, and probably dedicated to Hercules, nowadays, despite its name, it is a Catholic Church.

GUBBIO
Gubbio owes its popularity as one of Umbria’s most beautiful towns to its old quarter and picturesque streets, the sloping alleyways and the wealth of historical buildings. The atmosphere is so special that it has been chosen as main setting for “Don Matteo”, a famous Italian TV series.

SIGHTSEEING IN GUBBIO
There is so much beauty to see on your trip to Gubbio that you will probably not get round everything just in one day:

  • Duomo of Gubbio (also known as Basilica of Santi Mariano and Giacomo martiri). Its plain façade conceals a number of valuable works by local 16th century artists.
  • Opposite the Duomo stands Palazzo Ducale, a Renaissance-style building erected for Duke Federico of Montefeltro.
  • Piazza Grande square also boasts Palazzo dei Consoli palace, home to the municipal museum. Palazzo dei Consoli also showcases the famous Tavole Eugubine, the most outstanding document written in ancient Umbrian language.
  • A spectacular venue that, still nowadays, like in the 1st century BC when it was built, presents major events.
  • Combine culture with pleasure and take the cableway from the town centre to the mountain dominating Gubbio. Here you will find the Basilica of Sant’ Ubaldo, the local patron saint.

Wander along the narrow streets in the centre and you will be charmed by the variety of arts & crafts shops, including blacksmith workshops. In addition, Gubbio boasts Umbrian wine & food at its best, with typical products like crescia sul panaro (a special type of focaccia bread) and different truffle dishes.

TODI

  • One of Italy’s most beautiful medieval towns is awaiting you just 15km from Relais Paradiso. Todi’s enduring medieval spirit makes it one of Umbria’s most loved and visited towns. Its historical centre conceals little-known masterpieces, and you can plan your trip whenever you want on your holiday at Relais Paradiso, as it is just 15 km away.
  • Not far from Piazza del Popolo square you find the Church of San Fortunato, which is dedicated to the local patron saint and enshrines the relics of the blessed poet Jacopone da Todi, madly in love with Jesus, deemed one of the leading Italian poets of the Middle Age.
  • Still in the neighbourhood of Piazza del Popolo square, or better under the square itself, lie other interesting things. More precisely, Reservoirs built in Roman times to collect rainwater. It is estimated that the town’s intricate underground boasts over 5 kilometres of tunnels, more than 30 reservoirs, (pre-Roman, Roman and Medieval) and as many as 500 wells.
  • Piazza del Popolo square. A very special place, with a variety of medieval buildings that clearly mark the contrast between religious and secular rule. As a matter of fact, they include the Duomo of the Annunziata cathedral, as well as the Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Capitano and the Palazzo del Popolo palaces.
  • Co-Cathedral of Santissima Annunziata, Duomo of Todi, dating back to the 12th century.
  • Palazzo dei Priori, originally built in Gothic style, stands near Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo del Popolo, contributing to the wonder of the setting.
  • Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo del Popolo are the expression of political power in the communal age. They are situated one next to the other and now host the Town Hall and Todi Town Museum.
  • Outside the town walls stands the Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione church, a Renaissance architecture work of international renown. The identity of its creator is controversial: some say it may be attributed to Donato Bramante, the famous architect.

FOLIGNO
A lovely little town in green Umbria, ideal for a stroll or a bike ride. Located just 25 km from our relais with swimming pool and Spa, Foligno is a convenient and pleasant destination for a morning or afternoon trip.

Unlike the other Umbrian towns, which are all built uphill, Foligno is completely flat, so a walk around the old quarter and its outstanding historical and art gems is really easy-going.

  • Set between Porta Todi and Porta Romana gates, Parco dei Canapé park can be both the starting point and a spot for relaxing on your stroll in the centre.
  • Leaving Parco dei Canapé park and heading to the centre you first reach Piazza San Domenico square, where you can visit the Church of San Domenico and Santa Maria Infraportas.
  • The itinerary continues with Piazza della Repubblica square, which boasts one of the most beautiful views of Foligno: the architectural complex including the Duomo, Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Trinci.
  • Piazza Garibaldi, with the statue dedicated to him, marks the end of your tour of Foligno’s historical centre. In this square you can admire the Collegiate Church of San Salvatore and the Church of Sant’Agostino. Not far away, it is worth visiting the former Chiesa della Santissima Trinità in Annunziata church, which treasures one of the most controversial works of art of the twentieth century, namely the “Calamita Cosmica” (Cosmic Magnet) by Gino De Dominicis.

Food & Wine in Foligno reflect flavours from the hinterland, featuring mushrooms, beans and truffles, accompanied, of course, by good wine and, naturally,
by Umbrian extra virgin olive oil.

SPELLO
Just 30 km away from your wellness stay, here is the land of the “Infiorata” and of Pinturicchio’s masterpieces. Along the culture trail linking Assisi and Foligno, Spello is well worth a nice stop for an excursion dedicated to art and wonder.

Spello – which stands on a spur of Mount Subasio and is therefore characterized by typical narrow uphill alleyways – will surprise you with amazing views among its houses decorated with flowers.

THE INFIORATA
The Infiorata is an official event held once a year to celebrate Corpus Christi. It actually consists in the display of drawings and pictures created with skilfully intertwined flowers.

Yet, at any time of the year, according to season, all streets and buildings in Spello contribute to a true outdoor Infiorata. Your snapshots with tiny balconies and arches covered with flowers will make unforgettable Umbrian holiday memories.

PINTURICCHIO
In the Cappella Baglioni chapel – named after an influential Perugia family – , located inside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Spello, there are large and splendid frescoes by Bernardino di Betto Betti, known as Pinturicchio.

Along with Perugino and Raphael, Pinturicchio was one of the great fifteenth century Umbrian masters, hence a visit to Spello may be your chance to see some of his masterpieces.

In the Cappella Baglioni chapel you can admire the cycle of frescoes, dating from around 1501, depicting the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Dispute of Jesus with the Doctors.

Stop in a taverna and enjoy Spello’s typical products, which – how could it be different? – star extra virgin olive oil, also popular as Spello’s gold.

ORVIETO
The stunning “little gem” just 50 km from our countryside relais. Orvieto owes its popular nickname “città bomboniera” (little gem) to its really intricate and impressive layout. Built on the top of a tall tuff massif, Orvieto boasts very ancient origins as it was founded by the Etruscans around the 9th century BC.

UNDERGOUND ORVIETO
The tuff massif on which Orvieto stands was patiently carved by man over about 2500 years and is now a maze containing more than one thousand caves. The highlight of this incredible underground network is the Pozzo di San Patrizio well, dug around 1527 to help the town survive in case of a siege (it was the year of the sack of Rome).

The size of Orvieto’s Pozzo di San Patrizio is impressive: 62 meters deep with a diameter of 13.5 m, it is lined by two spiral staircases, where light flows in through 72 large windows. It is a unique site you must not miss on your trip to Orvieto!

Sightseeing in Orvieto

  • You start off visiting the Duomo, one of Central Italy’s Gothic architecture masterpieces. For its facade, which kept as many as 20 different artists busy, works went on for a stunning 3 centuries (from the thirteenth to the sixteenth).
  • Also the Duomo interior is full of treasures: the main attraction is the Cappella del Corporale chapel, which contains the Reliquiario del Corporale, a Gothic masterpiece made of silver, gold and translucent enamel by goldsmith Ugolino di Vieri from Siena between 1337 and 1338.
  • At this point the adventure does not continue “near” the Duomo, as usually happens in the average Italian town, but “under” it, with Underground Orvieto.

MONTEFALCO
One of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the heart of the Umbrian enology and the land of Sagrantino just 10 minutes drive from the Relais Paradiso.

Said Railing of Umbria for its position so panoramic, Montefalco represents a must for the visitor attentive to the typical food and wine of our region. Excellent opportunity for an excursion a few miles from our Resort with Spa.

LAND OF SAGRANTINO
Reference point of the wine production of the Region in which itproduces, among others, Sagrantino di Montefalco:DOCG red wine whose production is made with 100% Sagrantino grapes, is allowed only in the municipalities of Montefalco in full, and part of those of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell’Umbria in the province of Perugia.
