It began in 2015, with a passion for the natural black beaches along the picturesque northern coast of São Miguel in the Azores: the unique, almost magical, green pastures and mountain hues that contrast with the azure blue oceans are the ideal backdrop for a calming resort retreat.
It was here, overlooking the grand beach of Santa Barbara, that the Azores’ first ecologically-friendly eco-beach resort was opened. Our inviting natural coastal landscape, the elegance of our modern luxury spaces and our commitment to a full-range of experiences epitomizes our passion for the art of hospitality, nature and, above all, the Azores.
Not just another hotel, but a dream given form by João Reis, an entrepreneur and enthusiastic surfer, who realized a vision on the northern coast of São Miguel. It began from a passion: a passion for the dark, sandy beach that bears its name; for the mysterious blue waters of the Atlantic; and mystic green pastures and forested-mountains of Ribeira Grande.
This environment mixed with a desire to transmit the same passions for nature, the sea and, above all, the Azores resulted in SANTA BÁRBARA. João Reis respected the natural beauty of the island and developed this resort to be in harmony with the island’s unique surroundings.
Built from scratch, and in perfect symbiosis with the coastal ecology, the eco-friendly beach resort is integrated into its environment. Its architecture, the materials and the framing of the landscape were the three main concerns of the project. What resulted was a site that breathes in the island and coastal ecosystem, providing its visitors with a tranquil stay.
ROOMS & SUITES
The resort offers a total of 14 studios, 7 one bedroom villas and 9 two bedroom villas, integrating Singular Properties group, also owned by João and Catarina Reis, which includes WHITE Exclusive Villas & Suites and La Maison, also on the island of São Miguel.
DINING
Our gastronomic concept is inspired by the historical routes of the Far East: it is an unexpected journey through the exotic spices and authentic tastes/flavors discovered in the lands from India to Japan.
Our chef, André Santos, has developed several dishes inspired by Indian, Thai, Korean and Japanese cuisines that combine local farm-fresh ingredients with savory, aromatic and exotic tastes.
Santa Bárbara offers an outstanding gastronomic concept, praising the quality of local products – the Azorean meat, fresh fish and seafood from the Atlantic, alongside the freshest vegetables, aromatic herbs and fruits that arrive from our farm with two greenhouses and more than 4000m2 of production.
A way to guarantee a zero kilometer products and extra quality in a true “farm to table” concept. It offers an extensive list of national wines (various Azorean options) and innovative cocktails with Santa Bárbara signature.

BAR & POOL BAR
In order to provide ingredients with maximum flavor and freshness, all vegetables and aromatics are grown by ourselves in our seasonal and sustainable farm, being harvested daily for you.
ROOM SERVICE
All Villas have a kitchenette equipped with all the necessary utensils to enjoy our gastronomy: the Room Service Menu features a selection of dishes from the Restaurant (7-10pm) or All day menu (11am to 7pm).
BEACH CLUB
Next to the beach, the relaxed Santa Bárbara Beach Club serves light meals and snacks, making it the ideal option for both a lunch between dives and a glass in the evening.
FARM-TO-TABLE
Our organic farm supports our commitment to cultivating ecological and socially-responsible farm-fresh, sustainable produce at competitive rates to sustain our restaurants. The goal of this project is to provide our visitors with tasty and healthy meals in all our restaurants, while reducing our footprint and environmental impact.
Santa Barbara is currently developing an organic farming project to grow our own produce. Our goal is to supply our restaurants with fresh organic products at competitive prices in exchange for a meal that is incredibly tasty and healthy, while promoting and developing an ecologically and socially responsible consumption, with the aim of integrating it into our entire consumption chain.
ORIGIN PROTECTION
We know who and which methods were used in the production based on the principles of proximity, quality and ecology. Some questions were raised at the origin of this project, like what is the origin of the food we serve? Are they the best products we can have? Who produces them ? How do they do it? Can we do it better, more cost-effective and different?
NO DIG
It uses organic materials as fertilizer, applied directly to the soil without digging as a cover at least 5-15 cm over a cardboard layer that helps in the prevention of weeds.
THE FARM
Our farm is divided into an area with 3 plots that makes up about 1 ha, with the following organization of spaces: plots of rotating plant, production greenhouse, hydroponics and aeroponics greenhouse, composting, mandala plot and a pond.
SUSTAINABILITY
The agricultural technical plan includes soil correction, composting, farmland creation and crop rotatio. At an economic level, this will certainly contribute to a lower cost and be more valuable in terms of more sustainable tourism.
WELLNESS & FITNESS
With a privileged view over the 3.3 acre property, our wellness centre is dedicated to relaxing the mind and stimulating the body, providing a wide-range of exclusive services and treatments, such as our signature rituals, relaxation massages, alternative therapies and supportive yoga classes.

The Invitation is to “allow yourself to disconnect”, to unite yourself with all the elements of Nature in an infinite discovery of celebrating the best that life has in its most valuable essence. With our selection of aromatic herbs, waxes, oils and salts that come from our farm or from small local producers, made with time and care, we are sure to awaken the your senses.
EXTERIOR SPACES
The compound is dominated by a huge saltwater pool with submerged stone lounges and a manicured patio that provides views of the ocean that promise to relax and delight.
Nearby, the wooden deck, which was built on top of the cliff overlooking the beach, is the perfect place to have a massage, while relaxing to the sound of the waves, wind and seabirds. Individual patios with thatch parasols provide personal spaces for meditation, leisure and peace.
WHY ECO?
LANDSCAPE AND ARCHITECTURE INTEGRATION
The Resort’s architecture and choice of materials has as main objective the harmonious integration of the buildings in the natural surroundings. The architecture of the buildings was adjusted to the morphology of the terrain, in order to minimize the landscape impact and volume of the buildings in the space.
The construction materials selected are natural and of local/national origin, such as cryptomeria wood, bamboo and cork, enhancing the integration of buildings in the natural environment. The work was carried out mainly by local companies.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
To ensure the buildings’ energy efficiency, natural materials such as expanded cork agglomerate and cryptomeria wood were used in the buildings’ exterior cladding for thermal insulation.
Wood was also used inside the buildings, especially in the Villas & Studios, enhancing thermal insulation. The windows of the central building are made of aluminum frames with a thermal cut-off system and double glazing, with energy rating A+.
The entire resort’s hot water (DHW) system is based on highly efficient heat pumps. All lighting in the Resort is provided by LED technology. The Villas are equipped with a key card that switches off the lighting and electrical appliances when guests leave the room, a measure that contributes to the management of energy consumption.
BEACH CLEANING
With the aim of maintaining the beauty of our coast, our maintenance team devotes time to gathering debris and pollution deposited along the dark sand beach of Santa Bárbara. It is a small gesture that aims to involve the local community and alert them to this problem: in 2019, 350 kg of garbage was collected from our beach.
LUXURY AMENITIES
A special highlight goes to the amenities line that now bears the seal of Voya, an organic Irish brand, based on algae, with confirmed therapeutic properties and whose products recreate the calming effects of a spa experience, presented here in what could not be more in accordance with the sustainable practices that characterize the Singular Properties units.
EXPERIENCES
When you get here, take a deep breath and enjoy! Santa Bárbara has several spaces where you can peacefully relax. The outdoor decks facing the sea are arranged in different corners, with chairs where you can simply sit and contemplate all the surrounding nature.
Take a dip in our pool or go down to the beach. In our restaurant / bar you can dine or simply try one of our snacks, cocktails and gins. You can also relax at our Wellness Retreat and book a massage for a moment of pure pleasure and relaxation.
DIVE IN NATURE
The Azores are group of active volcanic islands, and on São Miguel there are several examples of this activity, which can provide you unique moments of pleasure. There are thermal pools on different locations of the island, which are mandatory stops for nature lovers, as well as for those who want to feel the unique sensation of a warm outdoor bath.
DEEP BLUE
Do you feel like a fish in the water? You cannot miss these experiences! The Azores are a privileged place to spot whales, dolphins and the underwater wildlife. It is considered one of the best places in the world to do this kind of activities. The animals are respected during these interactions and the fun is guaranteed.
ADVENTURE
