Sliezsky Dom Mountain Hotel is the highest hotel with comprehensive facilities in Slovakia at an altitude of 1,670 m above sea level. It is located directly below Gerlach, the highest peak in Slovakia. It has a unique location offering comprehensive services that will satisfy even the most demanding clients.

Listen to the silence of the mountains, enjoy beautiful views of the Tatra countryside and “recharge your batteries” in the highest mountain hotel in Slovakia. Families with kids can use a baby cot, high chair, changing table, baby carrier for a hike, and mini children’s corner.

THE HISTORY
The history of Sliezsky Dom began in 1871 when the first stone building was erected on its site. However, it was swept away by a snow avalanche just three years later. A single-storey new building later replaced it with eight rooms, four for guests. The building included two storerooms, a kitchen and a stable for two cows, which supplied the operation with fresh milk. The building was inaugurated on 2 June 1895.

In 1907 and 1908, the original lodge was enlarged with a spacious extension, increasing the capacity of the Sliezsky Dom to 40 beds. It was open from 15 June to 15 September.

Sliezsky Dom was the venue for pioneering ski training and served as a training centre for mountain troops during the First World War. Over the years, the Velická Valley gradually gained in popularity, and Sliezsky Dom became an ideal starting point for climbing Gerlach Peak.

Thanks to this, it underwent further reconstruction, which lasted until 1959. The renovated lodge provided accommodation in simple dormitories for 12 people and more comfortable accommodation in 3- to 4-bedded rooms with wardrobes for 103 people.

Introducing hot and cold water, electricity, and central heating significantly enhanced the guests’ comfort. However, the renovated lodge did not serve the tourists for long. In 1962, it caught fire and burned down completely in one night.

In 1965, the construction of the “Palace under Gerlach” began. The new hotel was put into operation three years later. At its opening, the new Sliezsky Dom had a capacity of 130 beds, which was later increased to 148 beds. At the beginning of the 1990s, the hotel was privatised, but the new owner needed more money to run it, so the hotel doors often remained closed to guests.

Sliezsky Dom provided shelter for countless tourists, climbers and skiers, among whom there was no shortage of prominent personalities. In 1995, it was visited by Pope John Paul II, who consecrated a wooden cross during his visit. The cross is still erected above the Sliezsky Dom in his honour today.

Sliezsky Dom underwent a complete reconstruction between 2009 and 2011, and today, it is the site of the highest mountain hotel with a comprehensive range of services for individual and corporate clients.

Thanks to a sensitive architectural approach, the exterior and interior of the hotel have retained the traditional Tatra style, whose atmosphere is enhanced by using quality natural materials and photographs of the High Tatras by Ladislav Janiga.

The hotel has 44 rooms. The hotel also offers a wheelchair-accessible standard room. The high standard of accommodation services is complemented by unique gastronomy in the hotel’s à la carte restaurant and a wellness centre with an unrepeatable view of Velické Tarn.

The hotel tries to meet the needs of less demanding tourists, for whom it provides accommodation in a tourist hostel with a capacity of 12 beds. Thanks to its exceptional location and complexity of services, the Sliezsky Dom Mountain Hotel is suitable for anyone looking for relaxation and privacy away from traditional tourist centres.

It also provides excellent conditions for family celebrations, weddings and corporate events. In the summer season, a self-service restaurant and an outdoor terrace overlooking the Velická Valley are also available for guests.

Easy hikes, forest walks or climbing Gerlach Peak are undoubtedly the best ways to get acquainted with the beauty of the Tatra countryside and enjoy its diversity. The hiking trails are open from 1 June to 31 October. The most beautiful summer is in the mountains!

HIKING, FAUNA & FLORA
The picturesque surroundings of the High Tatras offer a myriad of activities you can do individually or in the company of family and friends. Go on a challenging alpine hike or a relaxing walk or discover the fascinating world of animals and plants.

If you choose hiking, you can walk through the Tatra Mountains on trails marked with signs (red, blue, green, yellow). They are divided into several groups according to the difficulty of each section.

There are around 1,400 species of plants, among others, for example, the primrose, the Tatra fritillary, the alpine bearberry, the spicebush, the High Tatras spicebush, the eyebright, the glossy carnation and the Tatra poppy. Most of the area is covered with coniferous forests, with dwarf pine in the high altitudes; in the highest altitudes, no forests are left.

The Tatra Mountains are home to a number of animal species, among the rarest of which are the Tatra chamois, the mountain roe deer, the red deer, the Tatra marmot, the Tatra vole and the Tatra snow vole. The large carnivores are the lynx, the common wolf, the brown bear and the wild cat.

Birds include the golden eagle, common kestrel, peregrine falcon, sparrow hawk, Eurasian and wood owls. Among river animals, the river otter can be found here, and the river trout can also be found in the Tatra streams.

TRAIL RUNNING
The surroundings of Sliezsky Dom offer an ideal area for trail running activities. Trail running is becoming an increasingly popular sport not only among Slovaks. The sport is running in the open air, often on mountain or forest trails. Those who go trail running do it usually in all weather conditions.

The surroundings of Sliezsky Dom are a popular location for trail running, not only in summer but especially in winter; for both professional and recreational athletes, this location is ideal due to its altitude and superb climatic conditions.

If you go trail running in winter, we recommend you wear warm clothes and stretch to warm up your muscles before the actual run. Trail running, unlike traditional running on asphalt surfaces, doesn’t give runners time to do the same activities on the same route. The natural scenery dramatically enhances the enjoyment of running.

THE TATRAS IN WINTER
The surroundings of Sliezsky Dom offer exciting opportunities for sports and recreation during the winter months. Alpine hiking, tobogganing, ski mountaineering, icefalls, snowshoeing or climbing Gerlach Peak are just a small sample of what you can do in this magical winter environment.

WINTER HIKING
During the winter closure, you can enjoy easy hikes to either Hrebienok, Tatranská Polianka or Batizovské Tarn, as long as there is no continuous snow cover on the route. Approximately 20 km of marked trails are set out every winter in the alpine environment, only accessible to hikers up to the alpine huts.

Therefore, when visiting the Tatras, it is necessary to bear in mind that the hiking trails ending on the peaks of the Tatra peaks are closed, except for Slavkovský Peak, which, according to the TANAP visitor regulations, is accessible at times when there is no snow cover.

Before your tour, always inquire about the current weather and the condition of the trails at the Mountain Rescue Service or the Tourist Information Centre in Stary Smokovec. In winter, you can reach Sliezsky Dom by hiking trails from Tatranská Polianka, Starý Smokovec, and Tatranské Zruby.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING
Thanks to the location of Sliezsky Dom, ski mountaineering has never been easier. Behind the unique conditions that prevail in the Velická Valley during the winter, this sport is one of our guests’ most popular activities. Many guests even come up to us on the snowy road, have a delicious lunch and a coffee and go skiing again to Tatranská Polianka or Hrebienok.

Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced ski mountaineer, you will find opportunities for adequate enjoyment in both cases. The easy trails around Velické Tarn or the route to Hrebienok or Tatranská Polianka are ideal for recreational skiers new to ski mountaineering.

More athletic people who want to escape the crowded ski slopes can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside accompanied by a mountain guide and experience unforgettable downhill in pristine snow or climb to the peaks with spectacular views.

CLIMBING
Come and try climbing the white-blue splendour! Up to 6 icefalls freeze above Sliezsky Dom in winter – Orolin’s Ice, Nevestin Veil (Bride’s Veil), Večný dážď (Eternal Rain), the ice from the Veľká Crevice, the ice to the right of the Velická Próba and the well-known Sopel. The latter freezes up to 90 m long. For the ascent, you need special training or the company of a certified mountain guide, which we will happily arrange for you.

SLEDGING
Haven’t had a good laugh for a long time? When you go sledging, that is sure to happen, and the smile on your face won’t freeze from the cold. Return to your childhood on the 7 km long trail from Sliezský Dom to Tatranská Polianka. At the Sliezsky Dom reception, you can borrow classic wooden sledges and cheerful gliders.
