Originally built as Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle and his wife Zetta, it was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood elite. Legend has it that iconic actress Elizabeth Montgomery had her first marriage at the Red Barn.
The property also has had incarnations as Catalina Palms, El Rancho Lodge and now Sparrows Lodge. The Lodge was fully restored in 2013 and many of the original buildings are still in use with modern updates retaining the charm of the original Red Barn.
Sparrows Lodge is a completely restored 1950s retreat. You will be welcomed roadside with a simple hand-painted sign with two Sparrows.
The Lodge has a modern rustic vibe that carries through to our rooms, communal barn, outdoor fire pit and vegetable garden, accented by a collection of fine art including works by Ruscha, Kelly, Katz & Baldessari.
The 20 rooms feature exposed beam ceilings, russet red walls, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles and butterfly chairs. Swiss army blankets top plush mattresses, and instead of closets you’ll find a metal footlocker along with hooks and hangers.
Our bathrooms feature rain showers, and many include horse troughs as bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. All rooms have AC/Heat and ceiling fans. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.
Poolside Rooms
Poolside rooms are approx. 300 sq. feet. They feature a queen sized bed & open shower. All rooms feature unique artwork and a private patio. Bathrooms feature rain showers, Grown Alchemist toiletries, and some Poolside rooms feature steel horse trough bathtubs.
All rooms have AC/Heat and ceiling fans. Light continental breakfast, free wifi, and use of Sole townie bikes are available. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.
Garden Rooms
The Garden rooms are approx. 400 sq. feet, secluded, and located in the garden section of the property. All rooms feature a king size bed, rain showers, Grown Alchemist toiletries, and unique artwork.
Most rooms feature a private patio and steel horse trough bathtub. Light continental breakfast, free wifi, and use of Sole townie bikes are available. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.
The Cabin
The Cabin is our most secluded accommodation. The suite is approximately 500 sq. feet and features a full sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee brewer, and kitchen sink. It features a dining/living area separated from the bedroom.
The Cabin also features a king size bed, private patio, rain shower, AC/Heat and ceiling fan. Light continental breakfast, free wifi, and use of Sole townie bikes are available. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.
Owner’s Suite
The Owner’s Suite is our most exclusive accommodation. Size is approximately 800 sq. feet with high ceilings and an open loft like space. The suite features a separate living area, gas fireplace, king size bed and unique artwork.
The bathroom features a large steel horse trough bath tub and open shower with rain head. Light continental breakfast, free wifi, and use of Sole townie bikes are available. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.
The Barn Kitchen
The Barn Kitchen offers a refined take on rustic American cuisine. Focusing on influences from the nearby Coachella Valley, the Barn Kitchen brings small local farms and the unique aspects of the desert to classic American favorites.
We aim to create simple, uncomplicated cuisine by showcasing fresh California ingredients. By creating a communal dining atmosphere, we invite all of our guests to make meaningful connections and savor each experience.
We serve a simple to-go style breakfast for hotel guests only, which consists of banana bread, yogurt, granola, fruit, toast, and La Vittoria Coffee. The Barn Kitchen is open daily to the public for lunch from 11 am – 4 pm and dinner from 5pm – 8pm.
The bar remains open until 11 pm every day, serving a selection of microbrews, wine, and spirits. In the evening, gather around the fire pit for star gazing and smores.
Massage Tent
We have a humble massage tent with 2 treatment areas. It is an open-air massage tent designed to make the experience unique and feel like you are a part of our outdoor gardens. You will most likely hear birds chirping, fountains trickling, and the smell of burning sage.
That said, you may also hear noise from a neighbor (or their dog) or other guests enjoying the property. We love it, but know it might not be perfect for everyone. In-room massage is also available.
Weddings & Events
There is a certain magic that is present on Sparrows’ grounds, which make it an ideal location for weddings, events and corporate retreats. The communal setting and desert ranch backdrop provide an atmosphere that creates lasting memories for all who attend.
Sparrows Lodge can accommodate weddings and events for up to 100 guests. The Barn Kitchen, which is consistently considered one of the best restaurants in Palm Springs, will assure any of your culinary requests are being met.
