“When we first considered Kenya’s Maasai Mara as a Great Plains destination, I actually verbalised “Agh…all those people” but then looked at the map more carefully and the location for Mara Plains Camp became apparent.

WILD STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI
Our camps are perfect for any level of photographer from professional to committed hobbyist to novice. From the Selinda Reserve’s herds of elephants, to sunrises over the Zambezi River at Sapi Explorers Camp to ol Donyo’s Lodge two photographic hides, perfectly placed in front of a water hole that draws some of the regions last “big tusker” elephants, our camps are a photographers dream!

Our vehicles are open 4x4s with a maximum of 6 guests (private vehicles available), many of which come with stabilizing bean bags and camera mounts. Duba Plains is even home to a specialist photographic boat for exploring the Okavango Delta.

THE GREAT MIGRATION
Between July and October each year the Maasai Mara Reserve and the private conservancies that surround it are the best place to witness the power of this natural phenomenon. Mara Expedition Camp, Mara Plains Camp are perfectly positioned to put guests in the middle of the action.

Spend the whole day out with a packed lunch and cameras ready to capture a river-crossing or retreat to the calm of the conservancies and experience the herds without the crowds.

Outside of the July and October period not only is the resident game in the Maasai Mara outstanding year-round but the area is home to Kenya’s best-kept wildlife secret, a second migration!

Each year between late November and June more than 200,000 wildebeest move east to west from the Loita plains to the Mara traversing the Naibosho, Olare Motorogi and Mara North Conservancies, home to Mara Expedition, Mara Plains and soon Mara Nyika.

This means that almost 95% of the year the Great Plains camps in the Mara are at the heart of one of these two wildlife migration paths.

FLYING SAFARI
Not only are the majority of our properties from Zimbabwe to Kenya to Botswana accessed by air, via “hopper” flights between the camps, booking an additional aerial experience is always a thrilling addition to a stay with us.

At Mpala Jena Camp in Zambezi National Park or at any of our camps in Botswana guests can book a scenic helicopter flight to capture stunning aerial shots of Victoria Falls, the Okavango Delta or the wildlife-rich banks of the Selinda Spillway.

In Botswana you can even combine your scenic helicopter flight with our Life with Elephants tour, a cultural tour of the village of Eresha developed in partnership with the local community.

YOUNG EXPLORERS
Safaris with kids are much the same – a time to stimulate all the senses. Safaris open up a whole new world to us all, but for kids it is magical.

While new animals are a huge part of the excitement of safari, stepping away from everyday life in favor of spotting animal tracks and practicing your newly learnt traditional bush survival skills is an experience that kids and parents alike will cherish.

The Great Plains Young Explorers Program blends fun with conservation learning. On arrival each child receives a Young Explorers pack full of all that is needed for them to become a Conservation Ambassador.

The pack includes an activity book full of interesting information including animal tracks, seTswana or Kiswahili vocabulary, facts on flora, fauna and stars, word games and a safari journal. Great Plains guides and staff seamlessly modify the level of activities according to age.

Sustainability is at the heart of the Great Plains Conservation ethos, and sustainable technologies and systems are in place throughout our camps. With the opening of Zarafa 2008, we pioneered the concept of providing a luxury safari experience sustained entirely on solar power.

A decade later, we continue to innovate with, for example, the state-of-the-art Tesla solar battery system in place at Tembo Plains Camp.

Mount Kilimanjaro or just Kilimanjaro, with its three volcanic cones is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. In Our Tsavo, you’ll find our Red Elephants, with a resident herd of over 12,000 strong. Dubbed the “Green Hills of Africa,” the Chyulu Hills rise to 2,188 metres.

With their spotted coats, the Kenyan leopard is easily mistaken for a jaguar. Leopards are found in sub-Saharan Africa, whereas the Jaguar lives in the Americas. The lava flow from Shetani are only a few hundred years old.

Tsavo is Kenya’s oldest and largest national park. Dating to 1948 and totalling nearly 22,000 square kilometres, it is six times the size of the Maasai Mara and larger than a number of European countries.

THE TSAVO
The park borders Kenya’s Chyulu National Park and Tanzania’s Mkomazi National Park, as well as various sanctuaries, conservancies and group ranches. When you stand on our viewing deck, everything you see is protected ground.

Tsavo’s immense size makes it home to more landscapes, ecosystems, fauna and flora than you could ever witness in a single visit. Its rainforests and semi-arid scrublands beg for exploration, while its volcanic lava fields, Jurassic-age granite monoliths and ancient caves offer endless opportunities for walks and hikes.

Over 12,000 elephants roam Tsavo’s plains, as well the largest population of red elephant in East Africa. Gaze upwards and you will find 500 species of bird native to the area, making Tsavo a twitcher’s paradise.

In the distance, Kilimanjaro’s peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, only visible from Tsavo National Park, are omniscient, immense and silent. Given Tsavo’s sheer enormity and its unique eco-system, it has a very diverse landscape.

From the cloud forest on the Chyulu Hills, semi-arid scrub, volcanic lava fields, Jurassic age granite monoliths and the cliffs of the Yatta plateau, one of the world’s largest at roughly 290km long, one can spend days and days and barely scratch the surface of what Tsavo has to offer.

Finch Hattons is located in close proximity to several Maasai community ranches, and we employ both local Maasai and Kamba people in key roles in camp management and as safari guides.

All of our camp’s water comes from the pristine, clean and clear natural springs that surround us. We draw it directly from source, and purify and bottle it at the camp. We cherish this life-giving force, and the vitality it brings to our often harsh and unforgiving environment.

Tsavo features prominently in the world-famous book and film, Out of Africa. In the film, Robert Redford plays Denys Finch Hatton, and Meryl Streep his lover, Baroness Karen Blixen.

Denys Finch Hatton loved Tsavo, and lived and died here. At our camp, we have preserved the ideals that he lived by: a passion for the Kenyan wilderness coupled with a dedication to elegance and style.

We take our name from Denys Finch Hatton, the English aristocrat who, in the early 20th century, became the pioneer of the most opulent safaris East Africa had ever seen. He was the lover of Danish noblewoman Karen Blixen and features in her memoir, Out of Africa.

It was the combination of Denys Finch Hattons’ love for the wilderness and his refined tastes that inspired renowned hotelier Peter Frank and the Gehlot family to establish Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp in 1993.

When it came to creating luxury safaris, Denys Finch Hatton left no piece of silver cutlery unturned. His camps were quite literally fit for British royalty, and were defined by absolute opulence, total seclusion, romance and mystery.

Deep in the heart of the Kenyan wilderness, he served his guests exquisite dinners on fine bone china and offered them the chance to toast the stars with crystal glasses. Today, at the camp that is his namesake, his legacy is borne out in everything we do.

Peter Frank chose the site himself after flying around Tsavo National Park. He was drawn to the natural springs around which today’s camp is located.

The years that followed were a labour of love for both families as they set about creating a space that quickly became synonymous with outstanding hospitality amid majestic splendour. We set the standard for Kenya Luxury and then we revamped in 2015.

In the early years, Finch Hattons was known for its seven-course dinners, served with bone china and crystal (just like Denys’ original camps), and earned itself a reputation for the best fine dining in the bush.

At the time, our staff was trained by a Swiss cordon bleu chef. But times and tastes changed, and without altering the quality of our food and service, we have since stripped away some of these out-dated traditions to create an environment that is inviting, relaxed and still – quite undeniably – world class.

THE REBUILD
After the rebuild, a new chapter began at Finch Hattons. We appointed South African architect Francois Theron to see our vision through, as well as various project managers, construction workers and interior experts.

Of course, every member of our team had to have extensive experience working in logistically demanding and ecologically sensitive areas. The preservation of Tsavo was our prime concern.

The new design was different from the original in several important ways. Previously, for example, the layout of the camp interrupted animals’ access to the water. The new layout addressed this, while also prioritising the privacy of each tent.

Trees were considered a sacred commodity during construction and as many as possible were spared. The sustainability of our processes and infrastructure was also considered critical, and every measure was taken to make the camp as eco-friendly as possible.

The refurbished camp has retained the essence of the original Finch Hattons camp – and indeed Finch Hatton himself – while introducing an elegant and modern feel that is in harmony with our environment. When the new camp was reopened in 2015, it immediately won the award for Best New Safari Camp by Architectural Digest.

At Sanctuary Olonana, game viewing starts from the camp. A pod of hippos lives permanently in the river just below camp and many other species come to drink there. The Mara’s rich eco-system includes acacia-studded savannah, riparian forest and woodland which attract more than 300 bird species and a stunning variety of animal life all year round.

HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARI
Your balloon is inflated against the first rays of sunrise and once aloft floats gently over the plains and the plethora of game. The balloon lands around one hour after taking off with breakfast being prepared nearby.

CULTURAL VISIT TO MAASAI VILLAGE
Get an insight into the vibrant and still traditional way of life of the Maasai. Learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respected elder.

Accompanied by an experienced Maasai guide you are invited to visit the village which is built along traditional lines; complete with cattle enclosure, outer palisade and mud and cow dung huts.

Meet the elders, their wives and families and learn about the social structure of the homestead, the role of women in their society and many more aspects of their daily life. Interaction and discussion is encouraged, so whether the ladies are building a hut, the warriors are dancing or making fire with stones and sticks, guests are free to join in.

More and more popular are the visits organised by our guides to a variety of local schools during school term. These visits are free but we would recommend a donation to the school of anything upward of $15 per person.

KIDS’ ACTIVITIES
Our expert guides will take children out on special game drives and accompany them to the nearby Masai village where they will learn how to make and shoot a traditional bow and arrow, make a fire, build a hut, herding cattle to name a few.

Ololo Safari Lodge offers the warmth and comfort of a home with effortless style and personalized service. Originally an old Kenyan homestead and since converted to a small lodge, Ololo is perfectly situated, on the beautiful banks of the Mbagathi River which forms the southern border of the Nairobi National Park.

The lodge is a mere 45-minute drive through the park from Nairobi and both main airports, yet the lodge’s secluded location feels like a world away. Set on a productive 20 acre working farm, Ololo offers the joys of delicious ‘paddock to plate’ fresh ingredients. With our established and secluded gardens, guests are able to settle in and soak up a unique safari experience.

Wildlife is right on our doorstep and all can enjoy breathtaking views over the national park, to the famed Ngong Hills in the west, sundowner in hand. Ololo’s rooms are unique and diverse, each tastefully appointed with attention to historical detail. THE FAMILY WING
Ololo’s new, light filled Family Wing overlooks the Nairobi National Park and our gardens, with a private sunny stone terrace and potted leafy plants. The interior of the wing is light filled, relaxed and furnished with pieces of Ololo’s handcrafted furniture.

Upstairs is a king sized bedroom in a cosy mezzanine area, with a delightful en-suite bathroom and an old classic bath under makuti thatch. Downstairs at the end of the rondaval shaped living area, is a seperate sleeping space for family, with a second bathroom and kitchenette. The Family Wing comfortably sleeps five people, and an extra bed can be added downstairs.

TENTED COTTAGES
Our three tented cottages provide guests with a bush experience, sleeping under a traditional makuti thatch roof, with canvas and stone walls. These safari-style king-sized rooms are nestled amongst our gardens with it’s spreading and shady acacia trees. All have private terraces that overlook the national park.

Each tent is self-contained, with large beds, comfortable armchairs and modern bathrooms. Drift off to sleep to the sounds of Africa – the cough of a lion, the calls of monkeys and baboons, and the rustle of hundreds of species of birds.

THE STABLE COTTAGE
This delightful three-bedroom cottage is located at the end of the Stable Rooms and was once the farm’s hay shed. Now featuring modern, light-filled interiors the Stable Cottage sleeps a maximum of six guests, and has two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a large outdoor terrace. The cottage is perfect for families, groups, or extended stays.

THE OLD STABLE ROOMS
The original stone-walled stables of the property once housed the horses of the Ololo Farm. They have now been transformed into seven comfortable and cosy rooms with an average room size (including the bathroom) of 17.6 square metres. Each room is designed and furnished individually, with attention to historical detail.

The Stable Rooms have ensuite bathrooms and small pergola covered terraces at the front of the building. The terraces overlook our gardens, with it’s abundant birdlife. These charming rooms are popular with guests traveling as a group or for family members who wish to be accommodated close to each other.

THE GUEST MAIN LOUNGE 
After restoring and repurposing the original building, the Chapman’s opened Ololo as a safari lodge early in 2016. The lodge design and interiors are a blend of old and new, filled with an eclectic collection of handcrafted furniture, made by our skilful fundi carpenters with a backdrop of handprinted fabrics and artwork from both Kenya and Australia.

​Guests can relax in Ololo’s spacious living room in front of the cozy fireplace, with wine selected from the Ololo stone cellar, or sit in the quiet of the adjoining library.

​Our restaurant is open to the garden and the park, and often tables are set up on our vine-covered terrace, or under the old acacia trees in the garden. Evening drinks can be enjoyed with a brazier to ward off the cooler night air or guests can enjoy their ‘sundowner’ sitting by the

THE TOWER ROOM
Located in a stone-clad tower with a balcony and a private rooftop terrace, the Tower Room has extensive views right across the park, and to the famed Ngong Hills in the west. This contemporary suite is light and airy and furnished with pieces of furniture made by our clever fundi carpenters, in the Ololo workshop.

THE TERRACE ROOM
This spacious suite has a traditional living area with armchairs and an open fireplace, colonial furnishings, artworks, flowers from our garden and a marble bathroom with a classic roll-top bath. The suite’s private terrace is a cool and tranquil space to relax, or a setting for a romantic private dinner.

DINING
​’The Kitchen at Ololos’ chefs create delicious menus daily. Our bread, cakes and pastries are all baked in-house. Ololo’s menus are proudly created around produce on hand, grown here at the farm under organic farming practices.

We harvest our produce daily in the morning for the kitchen. All chicken and duck meat is grown at Ololo, as well as our fresh flavoured eggs. Mushrooms are also harvested daily from our mushroom house for your breakfast, or to top a delicious fillet of beef in the evening. All our ice creams and yoghurt is made from our own pasteurised milk, fresh from the farm.

Dine under the trees, on our terraces or on colder nights, in the restaurant with small braziers (jikos) to ward off the cold night air. You may wish to wile away the afternoon, enjoying a drink from our fully stocked bar, while relaxing and watching game pass by in our open lounge area overlooking the park.

BUSINESS IN THE BUSH 
Our bush setting is the ideal venue to hold a unique and memorable business meeting, retreat or team building event. Situated only a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi and it’s central business district, Ololo is the ideal ‘out of town’ destination with a bush difference.

Located on the southern border of the Nairobi National Park, and a mere 40 minutes from Nairobi, Ololo is able to provide a unique safari experience for conference delegates. It goes without saying that all our day conference guests are served an exquisite lunch, under the acacia trees as well as morning and afternoon tea on the conference terrace.

Your team are able to conduct meetings in in our beautiful, light-filled conference area overlooking Nairobi National Park, with all the privacy that is required. Delegates can choose to head out on a game-drive after a busy day, and if staying overnight enjoy a group bush dinner under the stars by our fire- pit.

Crossing the Ololo footbridge is the beginning of a unique, once in a life time experience with all of us at Ololo. You can choose to do as many …. or as little… of the adventures we have on offer. ​Relax around the pool with a sundowner and bitings or perhaps go on a wander to take a look at the Ololo farm or our furniture workshop.

We can take you on game drives into the only national park in the world on the edge of a capital city. Nairobi National Park is a surprise package and many of these birds and animals are visible from our terrace and restaurant as they move around the bush.

Ololo also takes guests to visit the renowned Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage without having to exit the national park. You are invited to take part on an excursion to Karen to visit the famed Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre or Kazuri Beads.

Or more to your inclination some shopping at local markets and boutique stores can be arranged. Anselm Hot Glass Studio and Kitengela Glass is a walk away across the neighboring farms to Ololo, with one of our Askari guides.

THE ORGANIC FARM
During your Ololo experience visit our farm which supplies our wonderful in-house restaurant, the ‘Kitchen at Ololo’, with fresh produce daily.

​Most of what appears on your plate comes directly from our thriving vegetable gardens, mushroom house and ever-expanding farm orchard. We produce fresh eggs and rear all the chicken as well as duck, enjoyed in your delicious meals. Ololo Farm is now selling our duck, chicken meat and eggs commercially, into the Nairobi market.

Even the milk on your table is sourced from Ololo Farm’s small dairy herd and is pasteurised and made into our delicious, fresh yoghurts and ice creams. Our chefs and kitchen hands – Kyeti, Nicholas, George , Maria and Shukri all love to experiment with the our seasonal produce, fresh from paddock to plate!

​Ololo is proud of it’s sustainable farming techniques, as well as our water recycling and composting systems. This includes the production of our natural fertiliser “Ololo Worm Tea” through worm composting. 100% of kitchen and food waste is either fed to the Ololo chickens or composted for use in the gardens.

Our water comes from our bore hole which we share with the local community, as well as filtered for guest’s drinking. A ‘grey water’ recycling and filtration unit treats all waste water that is then used in the Ololo gardens. The Ololo farm has recently been granted our organic status in April 2020 through Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN).

Our seasonal produce includes: Button-head and Oyster mushrooms, Thyme, Oregano, Sage, Mint, Basil, Sukuma (Collard Greens), Lemon grass, Rosemary, Kiwi, Lettuce mix, Rocket, Tarragon, Baby Leaf Spinach, Spinach, Eggplant, Celery, Leek, Cabbage, Beetroot, Coriander, Dill, Parsley, Fennel, Onions, Tomatoes, Sorrel, Potatoes, Mustard salad, Okra, Strawberry, Passion fruit, Courgette, Tree tomato, Radish, Garlic, Baby leaf lettuce, Spring onion, Rhubarb and Cucumber.

We’d love to take you on a tour during your visit and you are invited to help collect your breakfast eggs from one of our fat little hens! Egg collection happens between 11am and 2pm and the milking at 6:30am and 4:30am each day.

GAME DRIVES AT NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK
Morning game-drives at Ololo typically start at 6am, returning for a late breakfast, and the afternoon drives begin at 4 – 4.30pm. We are able to do a wake-up call to your room with coffee, tea or hot chocolate & banana bread for the morning game-drives before you get going.

Your guide will be happy to discuss how long you hope to be out and what aspects of the park you are interested in. Game-drives occasionally may be on a shared basis and some groups or individuals may be asked to join others.

SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST “BABY ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE”
Founded in 1977 by Daphne Sheldrick in honour & in memory of her late husband & naturalist David Sheldrick, the trust is today one of the most successful orphan rehabilitation programmes in the world. Ololo is able to take all non-resident guests to Sheldrick’s exclusive of entry or adoption fees.

KITENGELA HOT GLASS
A glass-blowing workshop and shop located nearby Ololo which has been built into an iconic ‘Tolkien’ brick dome. Watch re- cycled glass being transformed into remarkable pieces with a lovely hand crafted look. Guests are welcome to walk to the workshop accompanied by Ololo staff.

GAMES & FITNESS
If you’re feeling energetic in between safaris, enjoy some games under the trees. Here you’ll find badminton, table tennis, bocce/boules, a frisbee, footballs and a bow, arrows and target (parental supervision required for this one). Or if you want to keep your fitness up, then we have a skipping rope, a stationary bicycle and yoga mats.

GUIDED BIRDING TOUR
There are over 500 bird species recorded in the park, including resident and migratory birds. Some of the most commonly spotted birds in the park include the African Fish Eagle, Crowned Crane, Secretary Bird, Marabou Stork, Southern Ground Hornbill, and Yellow-throated Sandgrouse.

​Around Ololo you’ll find many of the smaller (but just as pretty and fascinating) species. So take a walk with one of our guides, and learn about the birdlife, as well as the interesting trees and plants that grow in our gardens. ​It’s seriously one of the most diverse birding ecosystems in the world!

MAIN RESTAURANT

HIPPO POOL BREAKFAST

BUSH DINNER
For those who have dreamt of dining in the wilds of the Masai Mara, our bush dining experiences are incomparable. We are experts at arranging breakfasts, lunches, dinners and cocktails in a number of dedicated sites: by the hippo pool, on panoramic Look-out Hill or on the savannah plains.

SUNDOWNER
The “Sundowner” is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great game hunting safaris of the 1920s when cocktails were always served as the sun began its descent. Your experience opens with a gentle evening game drive, ideally timed to catch the wildlife as it emerges into the cool of the evening.

Arriving at our sundowner site as the light turns to gold (ideal for photography), you can sip your drink and enjoy our inspirational selection of canapés as the sun slowly drops below the horizon. It typically leaves the sky streaked in shades of lilac, pink and gold. This is a sight never to be forgotten and an event not to be missed.

Our sundowner bar, open for just an hour each day at sunset, is located high above the plains on Lookout Hill with magnificent panoramic views and equipped with a blazing campfire, a safari bar, a hot canapé-counter, seating, safari lanterns, Maasai warriors and a guitarist (plus bathroom facilities).

OLOLOOLO ESCARPMENT HIKE EXPEDITION
Ololoolo escarpment forms the western boundary of the Mara triangle running along a geological fault line forming the edge of a granite plateau that rises to a height of 400 meters from the bottom.

The escarpment receives more rain than the rest of the Mara triangle and lots of fresh water streams radiate from its face disappearing into the ground only to reappear in swamps lower down.

As a result of the rains a growth of thick vegetation is found to be growing along the escarpment This terrain of the escarpment ranges from rocky crags, boulders strewn slopes and well-watered wetlands. The icing on the cake has to be the ability to enjoy endless plains of grass of the Mara Plains which are a site to from atop the escarpment.

There are several tracks along the escarpment used by the Germans during WW1. These tracks create an edge for adventure seekers. The hiking trail starts at the Ngira-re rangers out post(1645m) and gently ascends up for 4 km to a height of 1935m to reach the top (vertical height 290 Metres). The hiking takes 1- 2.5 hours ascending and 1 hour descending.

Guests leave the lodge after breakfast (7:30am) drive for 1 hour to the foot of the escarpment. The entire hiking take approximately 3 hours and guests are driven back to the lodge for lunch.

MAASAI VILLAGE VISIT
The Maasai are undoubtedly one of the most famous traditional cultures on earth. In fact, the Manyatta are usually a circular encampment of long, low, rounded houses, created by daubing cattle dung over a framework of sticks. Visiting a Manyatta is a good way to learn more about the Maasai culture and everyday life. Many ceremonies involve the ritual slaughter of cattle or goats with meat being distributed among the community, according to social rank.

At other times, live cattle are bled by opening a vein on the neck or flank with the point of an arrow. The blood is collected in a gourd and the wound closed with ashes. Then the blood is either drunk immediately while fresh or mixed with milk. Even at slaughter, blood is collected and mixed with milk to be drunk later. Sour milk is also considered a delicacy.

From Italy to Kenya, with love. We moved to Kenya in February 2006 to follow the construction of the Lonno Lodge, which opened to the public early 2009. Since the beginning of its activity we focused our attention particularly on the level of service we wanted to provide to our guests.

Here at Lonno Lodge you can receive, if you wish so, the personalized service you can expect from an hotel of our level, mixing service with attention to the customer’s needs, and maximum privacy with the beauty of a life on the sea side.

Rooms & Suites
The Charming Lonno Lodge is very cozy, but also very small, with only four rooms and four suites to guarantee everybody with silence and privacy.

The four rooms are in the Observation Tower, while each one of the four suites is on two floors, with independent access. Rooms and Suites mainly differ in size, and bedding, while several of the features they offer are common to every unit, such as:

The Tower Rooms
The Tower Rooms range from the cozy 42 sqm Deluxe Room, to the huge 72 sqm Top Tower Room with private and exclusive roof-top terrace; you’ll never ever miss the ocean view and the sea breeze, they’re just in front of you. Every room can accomodate 2 guests, plus a baby cot.

The Historical Suites
Suites with one bedroom or Family Suite with two bedrooms, from 90 up to 133 sqm, independent and with all the room you need to feel at home. A small indulgence for a well deserved holiday. Patio plus terraces are standard in our suites, they’re all facing the ocean except the GrandSuite, more secluded and facing the mature tropical garden.

Bedroom(s) and bathroom are on the first floor, living room is on the ground floor overlooking the natural garden, amid a cozy patio and frangipani’s fragrances. Suites can accomodate from 2 to 5 guests, plus a baby cot.

Dining
Our restaurant is very small and, more important, is reserved to our guests only. This means that it will never be crowded and that every guest will get proper attention. Not only for the service, but for the menu as well!

We’re ready to take care of specific dietary needs, from allergies to vegetarians, from gluten-free meals to vegan diets, but in any case our chefs will prepare wonderful lunches and dinners with local fresh ingredients, for both local kenyan dishes and international cuisine. And you’re not limited to a standard menu, simply because we do not have a “standard” menu.

Sure, we have dishes that are part of our daily cooking simply because they’re yummy and tasty, and for sure we’ll suggest you dishes from the swahili tradition, but you’re also invited to let us know your requests, your needs or simply preferences, and we’ll do our best to satisfy your wishes.

Gluten-free Restaurant
The small size of our restaurant, and a strict control on food preparation, allow us to cook even gluten-free food as bread, pasta, cookies and muffins. Gluten-free cereals suitable for coeliacs customers. Please notify us that you require gluten free food during the booking process.

The Swimmingpool
Our pool is right at the centre of Lonno Lodge, adjacent the restaurant and with its infinity edge facing the Indian Ocean: almost 200,000 litres of water, it’s surface is amplified by the absence of corners and by the harmony of its curving lines. The pool is never crowded, even at peak turnout, and there are always plenty of comfortable lounge chairs available.

We love devoting the utmost care to our pool so that you’ll always find the water perfect, but with great respect for the environment. In fact, the pre-filtered water coming from our desalination plant is regularly controlled and maintained to ensure minimal use of chemical products.

But, to tell the truth, all this is really just complicating things since, due to the conviviality of the sea breeze, the closeness of the bar, and the silence and tranquility that sets our structure apart, our guests tend to stick to the lounge chairs in complete and total relaxation. Don’t worry: none of us will attempt to fix this problem.

Swimming with Dolphins
Watching dolphins jump and play is always a unique and unforgettable experience. Get a boat, go looking for them. Swimming with dolphins is definitely not a great idea, sorry about that. Dolphins are lovely, incredible, beautiful but wild animals, and very protective of their young.

But watching them swimming and jumping and playing around your boat is a magical experience worth trying, to bring home in memories and pictures. Dolphin families have lived in Watamu’s Protected Park and Reserve in Kenya for as long as people can remember.

Watamu Marine Association have been studying these highly intelligent marine mammals since 2010, and have so far found that over 100 different animals inhabit this area, many of them mothers and young calves.

There are three species of dolphin that you can see in Watamu; the Indo Pacific Bottlenose dolphin, the rare Indo Pacific Humpback dolphin and the off shore acrobats the Spinner dolphins. Whoever you see please enjoy them naturally but do remain in the boat.

Dolphins are wild and have over 100 teeth! Here are some guidelines from Watamu Marine Association that will help you enjoy your experience and help protect our Watamu dolphins:

• Do not touch dolphins. As said swimming with dolphins is strongly not suggested, and clearly not touching dolphins as well.
• Do not feed dolphins or throw objects in the water to attract them.
• Do not make sudden or loud noises like banging on the boat or shouting. This can damage their hearing and interfere with their communication, navigation and prey location.
• Do not jump in and swim with dolphins unless they come to you first, and you are already in the water. Chasing dolphins to swim with them may place both you and the dolphins at risk. Especially if they have young.
• If you would like to watch our wild dolphins please contact reception, we can put you in touch with experienced captains that can take you on their boats safely, privately or on a shared group. Going on a Dhow Cruise is also a wonderful way to meet dolphins.

Your Safari in Kenya will leave directly from the Lodge. At 7am your driver will be waiting for you on a 4×4 Landcruiser, ready to take your party to explore and experience Tsavo. Pls remember that the 4×4 will be just for you, no sharing, and do not forget to fully charge your batteries the night before the Safari.

Hat, sunglasses and binoculars are warmly recommended, water is provided on board, and a light snack for breakfast too! Along the road of “Mariakani”, that crosses typical African villages and a beautiful palm grove, we will stop for a coffee before reaching the Tsavo National Park entrance, following meals will be served at the Safari Lodge. You’ll be back at Lonno Lodge the following day, late afternoon.

Tsavo National Park
With a total area of 21,812 square kilometres, Tsavo is the largest natural park in the country. The park was inaugurated in April 1948 and in May this year was subdivided for administrative purposes in Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park.

The park includes a variety of habitats. Tsavo East is predominantly flat. Penetrating a little further you are at the sight of the savannah and arid plain, where you can see antelopes, gazelles, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras … and about 500 species of birds that live there, including the beautiful fisherman eagle (haliaeetus vocifer) and the colourful kingfisher.

The main relief is the Yatta plateau which, with its 290 km, is the largest lava surface in the world created by the activity of the Ol Donyo Sabuk Volcano. You can also admire the Lugard Falls a system of waterfalls formed by the Galana, named after Frederick Lugard (explorer 1858-1945).

The Game Drives
Searching for wild animals with a Landcruiser, that’s what ‘Game Drives’ are all about during your safari in Kenya. Coupled with the African horizon and spectacular skies, a game drive through the Tsavo offers for an experience of a lifetime into the wild, greatly enhancing your chances of spotting the Big 5.

Wild animals are mostly active in the early mornings and late afternoons. That’s why the Game Drives always start early, around 6 o’clock in the morning, and last 3 to 4 hours to be back to the camp for lunch. At around 16 o’clock the afternoon game drive sets off, and also takes roughly 3 to 4 hours, to arrive back at lodge on time to freshen up before dinner.

Satao Camp
Satao Camp is in the heart of Tsavo East National Park. Its location is excellent. Several pools of water nearby attract wildlife and the identification of animals is easy because the park is in a horizontal position with the prairies of the savannah.

A Safari in Kenya: your Lodge
The camp boasts 20 authentic safari style en-suite tents, each with private verandas, nestled among the tamarind trees surrounding the camp’s very own watering hole.

The tents are carefully positioned to allow uninterrupted views of the visiting wildlife whilst ensuring total privacy. The tents interiors are simply exquisite. All are attractively furnished to a unique African design.

Sightseeing
Tsavo National Park is large, very large (actually, the largest in Kenya) and it’s not practical to see all of its hotspots in two days, you’d shrink too much of your Game Drives.

During your 2 days Safari you’ll have the opportunity to see a good chunk of these points of interest, selected by your professional driver according to weather and roads condition, and to the presence of wildlife in the season of your Safari, among the Aruba Dam, built on the Voi River, or the Mudanda Rock and the Yatta Plateau, or the Lugard Falls on the Galana River and the Galana River itself.

After breakfast, around 8:30am our private transfer will take you to the harbour to board a traditional lateen sail dhow that will cruise you the whole day off the Kenya coast and/or inside the Mida Creek. You’ll spend the time exploring desert beaches, looking for Humpback Whales or chasing Dolphins.

Snorkeling and lazily lying on board will also be part of your day, do not forget the sunscreen. Lunch will be served on board, and drink and fresh fruit will be available for the whole cruise, that will take you back to the departure harbour after a charming sundowner at sunset cruising the Mida Creek, just in time for a shower before dinner.

Sailing with the fishermen
From November to April, during the monsoon season when the sea is calm and the fishing season is also at its peak, it is the best moment to experience a day of fishing with the fishermen of Watamu.

No engine boats, no deep-sea fishing, only wind, silence and hard work. You simply have to show up at the beach around 4pm, when the fishermen are back, to arrange for the following day.

Consider that for a day of fishing you’ll have to be around from 5am to 4pm because the fishermen go out 15-20 kilometers, and it is a 2 or 3 hours travel because of the little wind in the morning. Then they fish for three or so hours, and the moment comes to sail the wind back, for the return trip.

The experience is truly unique, and completely safe. There are always several boats fishing together, always helping each other, and even in case of a broken sail there is always another boat to safely take you back to Watamu. To the Watamu Beach, to sell your catch of the day.

The Do-Nothing Tour
The “Otium Tour”. That’s right: spending the whole day laying around. Have you overestimated your own strength? Changing your environment, seeing different places and people, and altering your schedule and diet is not only fulfilling, it is also quite exhausting.

So, don’t forget to include a place to relax. Holidays should be full of “otium” leisure, as classical age Romans knew well, far from the hassles, traffic, and mindfulness that are at the centre of daily life.

Because a real body-mind holiday is just taking in one’s surroundings without thinking of anything. We could really benefit from adopting our ancient fathers’ idea of “otium”, a break from action.

Try out the different beds at Lonno Lodge, take your time; don’t line up for the bed, it makes no sense, there are plenty of them. BREAKFAST ON LION ROCK
A vast embankment of volcanic rock, which rises from the plains and offers unique views, Lion Rock is so-called because it used to be a favourite lion haunt, including the famous man-eating lions of Tsavo. Today, the rock is used exclusively by the Lodge as a breakfast spot.

Setting off early from the lodge, guests can enjoy a gentle game drive en route to the rock, arriving to find that a full English breakfast has been laid out for them on its summit. (Simple bathroom facilities are provided.)

SUNDOWNERS ON LION ROCK
The Sundowner is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920s when elegant cocktails were always served while guests watched the magnificent spectacle of the African sunset.

Timed to commence as the sun starts its descent, the Tsavo Serena Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at Lion Rock just as the evening sky turns golden-pink to enjoy full bar service and cocktail snacks. Musical entertainment can also be provided. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner.

BUSH DINNER
Dine in the wild and taste safari life at its best, accompanied by a group of scarlet-clad Maasai morans (warriors) or Akamba drummers. Located in a grove of acacia trees immediately adjacent to the lodge, your lantern-lit dinner begins with cocktails around the campfire.

BUSH BBQ DINNER
When the food couldn’t get any better, throw in a view to die for! Adjacent to the Lodge is our dedicated bush barbeque area, which overlooks the Chyulu Hills and is traditionally lit with safari lanterns. Reached by a winding, lantern-lit pathway from the lodge, it features a stone-built buffet-area, bush bar and a glowing charcoal barbeque.

Here, our chefs prepare a lavish 7-course banquet, which is served to individual tables gathered around a blazing fire-pit. At the end of dinner, our guitarist entertains you as drinks are served around the bonfire. A special cultural dancing troup may also be at hand to entertain you.

VISIT TO MZIMA SPRINGS
“Mzima,” meaning alive in Kiswahili, is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to a unique ecosystem at only 40 kilometres away from the Chyulu Hills.

With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green. It’s a haven for fishes, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos. The main attractions are the two nature trails leading to an underwater viewing tank built to allow visitors to watch hippos!

ROARING ROCKS
Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs.

Over the plain called Rhino Valley and the Ngulia, the Roaring Rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has long been an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. The eerie Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of cicadas that inhabit them and the howl of wind that hits the bare rocks.

VISIT TO THE SHETANI CAVES AND LAVA FLOWS
A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions.

They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow “shetani,” meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old. Climbing the flow isn’t an easy task as the thick, black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.

GAME DRIVES
Experience the daily drama that unfolds in the Kenyan Savannah! Tsavo National Park consists of a diverse ecosystem where numerous species of wildlife are spotted on any game drive.

From the tenacious elephant herds to buffalos and the big cats, a game drive in Tsavo is a must-have experience! Both night and daytime game drives are possible to give guests the opportunity to view both diurnal and nocturnal animals.

LION ROCK BREAKFAST WITH BUBBLY
Not many experiences are more memorable, or as typically Kenyan, as breakfast on the “Lion Rock.” One cannot resist the charming “Jambo” from the chefs as they welcome you to our wonderfully set breakfast buffet of cold cuts, fruits, cereals and hot dishes with eggs made to your specifications as you wait. A great setting for wildlife watching, you’re welcome to relax and only say “Kwaheri” (goodbye) after you’ve had enough.
