The estate underwent a large restauration process as off 2012 and was opened at the end of 2016; easy accessible and centrally located from all sides of the country as well as Belgium, Germany, UK etc.

HISTORY
The history of the iconic Broekhuizen estate takes centuries back. Broekhuizen Castle has been serving as a knight’s city, country house and estate in Leersum for a long time. Parc Broekhuizen has become a large three-storey building, the protruding middle section of which is dominated by a monumental peristilium formed by four iconic columns.

The façade bears the coat of arms (a red and gold variegated cross in silver) of the Van Broeckhuysen family from Utrecht. In 1906, the Main House was destroyed by fire and then a direct reconstruction.

The building has known many different residents and functions. A rich merchant, Cornelis Jan van Nellesteyn, lived there and he died in 1832. Fron 1971 till 1996, Parc Broekhuizen was a National Institute for Nature Conservation.

SUITES
Boutique hotel Parc Broekhuizen offers 7 suites and 7 loft rooms in the Main House and 8 beautiful rooms in the Carriage House. Both historical buildings offer a comfortable stay including fresh white linens, comfortable beds, art, magazines and amenities such as free Wi-Fi, a wide range of tv channels, and a complementary minibar.

The Grand Suite
The Grand Suite is the largest and most luxurious suite we offer in the Main House at Parc Broekhuizen. The Grand Suite is an excellent choice when you want accommodation that offers beautiful views of the Estate pond, a four-poster king-size bed and a stand-alone bath tub, along with other pieces of tailor-made designer furniture and innovative design.

You will also find amenities such as the smart lighting system, a bathroom with walk-in rain shower and Grown Alchemist skincare. Climate control, Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a complementary mini-bar are included. Accessible by elevator.

The Terrace Suite
Offering breath taking 180 degrees views of the Estate, the Terrace Suite provides for that extra touch of luxury. Come rain or shine, you can enjoy the wonderful views either outside on the terrace or inside the Suite from the large windows.

Inside the bright and elegant room, the interior offers a blend of functionality and comfort. It features a king-size bed with Italian linen, tailor-made designer furniture and a large bathroom with a bath tub and walk-in rain shower with Grown Alchemist skincare.

The Family Room
In the Family Suite it is possible to convert the comfortable lounge sofa into an extra bed. This makes the suite perfect for a family of four (two adults and two children) or for a couple who wish to relax and watch TV together. The Family Suite offers a walk-in rain shower with Grown Alchemist skincare, king-size bed, a generous lounge area, and wonderful views of the garden.

Medium Loft
The Medium Lofts are characteristic rooms located on the third floor of the Main House. We have three Medium Lofts and each of them have a unique interior and styling. The original wooden beams are visible and give the lofts a warm and cosy feel. You will also find unique design carpeting which will certainly draw your attention.

These lofts are slightly bigger than the Small Loft which provides space for a comfortable sitting area. The Medium Loft has a luxurious king-size bed with Italian linen, a bathroom with walk-in rain shower and Grown Alchemist skincare.

Carriage House Rooms
Wind down in an urban-inspired décor featuring dark wooden floors, original wooden beams, and green interior design. Located at a stone’s throw from the Main House, each of the eight rooms in the Carriage House can be found on the first floor and offer views of the Parc’s nature.

The hallway has a glass ceiling and botanical elements, creating a greenhouse feel. The Carriage House rooms are also ideal for groups or families so that you can all enjoy your stay at the Parc in the same building and on the same floor.

The Carriage House rooms have a luxurious king-size bed with Italian linen, a spacious bathroom with walk-in rain shower and Grown Alchemist skincare.

THE BREAKFAST
We serve a full à-la-carte breakfast experience daily from 08h00-10h00. Our Chef prepares an energizing, healthy breakfast with fresh and mainly local ingredients. A great start to your day!

Breakfast is served to all our in-house guests as well as all outside guests who would like to join us with their families, friends or business associates. In case you wish to book a private breakfast meeting or presentation we will check the availability in our Salons for you and help you with the arrangements.

RESTAURANT VOLTAIRE
Restaurant Voltaire is part of Culinary Estate Parc Broekhuizen and is located together with the boutique hotel in the monumental Main House from 1408. On the outside the building breathes history.

On the inside, original details and modern styling blend seamlessly. Upon entering Restaurant Voltaire, you actually walk along the kitchen as we guide you to your table. Voltaire also has an informal bar and an outside terrace with breathtaking views.

On Fridays and Saturdays, dinner is only possible in combination with a hotel overnight stay. There are some possible exceptions, please consult the booking module for available dates. It is possible to be placed on the waiting list in case there is last-minute availability, please contact the front office for details.

At Restaurant Voltaire lunch is served starting from 4 courses. At dinner, we serve a 5-course Émilie menu or a 7-course Voltaire menu. If you would like the Voltaire menu please arrive no later than 20:00.

JACOB JAN BOERMA
Jacob Jan Boerma has been closely involved with Parc Broekhuizen for years as culinary advisor of Restaurant Voltaire. In 2014, his restaurant ‘De Leest’ in Vaassen was awarded with three Michelin stars.

Today Jacob Jan is nationally and internationally involved in a large number of culinary events, restaurants and concepts. Jacob Jan has a preference for fresh tones, acids and spices. He shared this love with Robert Poel, who was responsible for the kitchen from the opening until December 2021.

Robert worked in the kitchen of De Leest for many years before becoming Chef of Restaurant Voltaire. As of January 2022, Arturo Dalhuisen is in charge of the kitchen, who worked with Jacob Jan.

Jacob Jan mentioned: “Of course it is fantastic to be able to work with Arturo in this wonderful restaurant. I am very much looking forward to supporting him and taking the next step”.

ART AT THE PARC

Both inside the hotel and the surrounding buildings you will find historic and modern art treasures. This inspired to add an art program with various art exhibitions. As of March 2020, every 6-8 weeks we exhibite some selected collections of various artists. The name of this programme is ‘Art at the Parc’.

FESTIVAL OF HEARTS

From the 12th of February we will start a celebration of love at Parc Broekhuizen! For one month, the Parc is exhibiting the works of artist Michèl Poort. His special art is completely dedicated to the heart with heart-shaped creations such as ceramics, wood, glass, and digital works.

To Michèl the heart is his life’s work: “For me as an artist, the heart is the most beautiful shape which allows for many possibilities. It allows me to be present and that is what I wish to share”. Within this exhibition, explore his ‘heartbeats’, a retrospective of the heart which makes everything beat again.

Poort’s exhibition is part of the art programme Art at the Parc at Parc Broekhuizen. The works will be displayed in the Carriage House, the Hotel, Restaurant Voltaire, and Bistro LOF.

SCULPTURES AT THE PARC

For the coming year, an art route called Pastorale 2.0 is being organized on the Parc Broekhuizen estate. Originally organized from April 14 till begin 2023 , the outdoor exposition continues well into the new year (2023). The estate and surrounding land will feature sculptures that highlight the simple life of modern times.

A world of feeling and not thinking. The flight from the civilized world to the natural world. From the world of rules to the world where no rules apply. A place where you learn to see yourself and each other with different eyes.

Pastoralism is pastoral, you are led as a sheep, but in this day and age you really have to do it yourself. On the art route, puzzle pieces will be handed out that are scattered around and can give you insight. It is our goal to give you another framework, to look at Parc Broekhuizen with a new view and, after staying there, also the world and the time that lies before and behind you.

After the time of using nature, we move to a time of embracing nature to learn to see again. Together we will reconsider and look at the world with new eyes. We need nature and art, equally, to pick up the thread reborn. Not elitist, not pompous but approachable and nonchalant we let ourselves be led.

We flee temporarily in order to return with new energy, new insights and feeling. Modern city-dwellers who return to nature and culture in order to return as a better person and rebuild the world. Walking, talking, enjoying and using all our senses.

Who is the shepherd? Perhaps you are if you have visited the exhibition at Parc Broekhuizen and return enlightened. In love with the world. Leaving behind gloom and darkness and defeated. Original, old and new, young and old. Unbiased. No prior knowledge required. If you can feel you are ready.

Pastorale 2.0 is hopefully the beginning of a periodic visual arts event. Sculpture is the main focus of Pastorale 2.0, but through a side program attention will also be given to poetry, literature and music. During the special events there will also be attention for the inner human, food and drink, and celebrating life.

KITCHEN GARDEN
Looking at old pictures of our estate, we discovered a kitchengarden surrounding the pond, right next to the ancient stone wall and in front of the farmhouse. In the spring of 2020, on that exact spot, we planted our new kitchengarden.

Having their own kitchengarden has always been a great wish of our Chefs, Arturo Dalhuisen and Ewout Eleveld. Since the kitchengarden is a reality, every day the Chefs, or one of the teammembers, are bussy gathering herbs, fruits and ingrediënts for their beautiful dishes or homemade lemonade, tea or for breakfast purposes.

Passionate about bees, this couple living in Doorn has a great love of nature and honeybees. They installed two apiaries on the grounds of the estate. These bees, called Buckfast, produce honey for our Voltaire kitchen.

You can also find a botanical garden, called the Londotuin, named after the founder mr Ger Londo. This garden is managed by a group of vollunteers of the foundation Dorp en Natuur Leersum-Amerongen.

CULTURE & MUSEUMS

The municipality of the Utrecht Ridge, where action, relaxation and nature come together. There are several cycling and walking routes through the beautiful landscapes of forests and moors castles and estates. Also the authentic villages have an experience for each individual.

CYCLING
Various cycling and walking routes can be found around the beautiful estate of Parc Broekhuizen in Leersum on the Utrecht Ridge. Every day a new experience through the winding paths and the historic beech avenues with ancient history. It is allowed to take the dog on a leash.

We attach great value to the preservation of nature including all flora and fauna. Staatsbosbeheer and Parc Broekhuizen want to contribute to this so that together we can ensure that we preserve the beautiful nature around us. THE HISTORY
Amsterdam’s 17th-century canal system is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The international recognition of the canals by UNESCO confirmed the exceptional value of the area and provided crucial support for listed buildings policy in Amsterdam’s city centre.

Amsterdam’s canals are unique as urban engineering and architectural artworks, and as the physical expression of the major economic, political and cultural fruition Amsterdam achieved during what is referred to as the Golden Age.

The building at 717 Prinsengracht was long inhabited by a wealthy sugar trader. He initially lived in the 17th-century rear house [achterhuis] which he expanded down to a residential building in 1810 by building a new house in front of it [voorhuis].

This enabled him to display his wealth to others. After the expansion, the rear house served solely as a ‘Suykermoolen’ or sugar mill. Hotel Seven one Seven opened its doors to its first guests on 8 May 1997.

Located in the heart of the Jordaan, the cultural centre of Amsterdam, Canal House is situated on the Keizersgracht (the King’s Canal) and is comprised of three seventeenth century merchants’ houses.

Canal House is a typical example of 17th Century Dutch architecture. Now a ‘monumented’ site, the building features intricate original features, carving and scrollwork as well as typically stately proportions, all signs of wealth in years gone by.

Our Great Room is a beautiful spot to enjoy a leisurely afternoon relaxing, with views over the private garden. The bar at Canal House is both chic and stylish, and is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or the famous Canal House G&T before heading out into the city.

Our stunning private garden is perfect to enjoy a quiet drink in after a day shopping in the boutiques and galleries. Also in the garden are the Summer House and Garden House – both of which are available for private hire. After you’ve shopped ‘till you dropped filling every last nook and cranny of your suitcase, our limo service is waiting to take you to Schiphol Airport in style.

Due to the limited space and desire to maintain a level of equality, the houses were rarely more than 30ft wide (9 metres) and characterised by large, narrow windows and decorative gable tops.

Very narrow stairs maximised space in the buildings, however this made moving furniture and goods difficult. Pulleys were used both inside and outside the buildings to transport larger objects to the upper floors. Canal House is still rich with these features – some of which were actively used during the restoration.

Canal House is extremely unusual in its scale and size. The Great Room which links the buildings together was designed for impressive entertainment. The triple width garden, likewise, is an extremely rare feature in Amsterdam.

Canal House also has a distinctive horse-shoe shape, enveloping a small house on each side, though this was not intentional. A previous owner installed his mistress in this part of the building which is why it is now missing.

Our buildings, numbers 148 and 152 were the home to several merchants and their businesses in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, before being turned into a hotel in the 1950s, by an eccentric and flamboyant American hotelier who was an avid collector of Dutch art and knick-knacks which were proudly displayed on walls, shelves and every other flat surface in the buildings in a traditional Dutch fashion. Many of these have been retained and re-used, providing continuity to the buildings that have stood on this spot for four hundred years.

Outside the entrance, you will see the name of St. Donatus, to whom the buildings were dedicated when they were built. He is the saint who guards against lightning, his cult is also linked with protecting the grape harvest.

Our vision for Canal House was all about exquisite materials, luxury and celebrating Dutch design. We have a weakness for Marcel Wanders’ contemporary gothic pieces, and so it felt right to bring him and renowned agency Concrete onto the project.

We stayed at Canal House in Amsterdam twenty years ago and had to pinch each other. In those days, it was a higgledy-piggledy property, slightly chaotic but oozing with charm.

Set on Amsterdam’s grandest canal, the Keizersgracht, the hotel is made up of three adjoining townhouses. But even amongst the astonishingly beautiful properties along the canals of the Venice of the North, it is unusual and unique.

For one thing, the heart of the building is a magnificent old ballroom that spans the width of all three houses – making it an extraordinary place to entertain and be entertained. For another, in a city where land is exceptionally valuable (because it is reclaimed from the sea), there is an enormous garden – with a tea house and a garden house too.

I remember squeezing my husband’s hand when we walked in for the first time. I knew that if we ever did a hotel in Holland, it would have to be here. When we got to know the owners and they decided to retire, we got on the first plane.

We spent three years rebuilding the houses from bottom to top (that’s the only way you can do things in Amsterdam). I wanted to capture the history of the buildings, but also of the trade that made the Netherlands so successful.

I wanted the hotel to reflect the glory of the Dutch Golden Age when Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals produced art that can make you cry with its beauty. At Canal House, I’ve played with a lot of the same themes that define Amsterdam in both the past and the present; it’s important not to create something that feels like a museum by mistake.

People can forget that the Dutch are immensely creative when it comes to textiles, furniture, and design. So you’ll see 18th century pieces sitting side by side with those by Marcel Wanders, antiques alongside items from the Droog movement.

I’ve used a lot of black around the hotel, but also used lots of mirrors to play with the light. I wanted Canal House to feel as luxurious as it would have been in the glorious 18th century when fabrics were being brought back from all over the world, so there is a lot of velvet to give that sense of softness.

I’m a big fan of the colour purple which in this context is dark, exotic, and sultry. I feel like a visitor from 300 years ago would be as excited to stay as one from today – though they might be surprised by some of the modern touches (like the minibars!)

I love sitting in one of the rooms that overlook the canal, watching pleasure boats go back and forth, and letting the sunlight stream through the windows. I am partly Dutch and I feel both contented and at home watching the world go by in the most ‘Canal House’ of the canal houses in the city. I’d love to live in Amsterdam one day.

THE SUMMER HOUSE
Adjacent to the Garden House, the Summer House is available throughout the spring and summer months. With space for just 2 people, it is an ideal spot to sit with a glass of wine and something to read.

A gardener’s dream, our garden is the largest in Amsterdam, boasting an impressive and enviable triple-width. Artfully designed by Rose and Laura of Dale & Heybrook, the garden is abundant with glorious white hydrangeas and furnished with the same care and attention as the interiors.

The signature purple of Canal House is evident in the ultra comfy all-weather sofas and is subtly carried through in the geometric paving design. The gentle trickling of the water features completes the sensory experience.

HOTEL HISTORY
The historic heart of Amsterdam is known for its beauty throughout the world. The canals with their stately seventeenth-century mansions contribute to Amsterdam’s traditional charm and are also appreciated as an important part of our cultural heritage.

In 2010 the canal district was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The placement on this list signifies international recognition of the unique value and beauty of the canal district. During both summer and winter, the enchantment of the canals attracts many visitors from all over the world.

“Cobra stole my heart… and, as always with the big loves of your life, it came like a bolt out of the blue. Suddenly, my breath was taken away by the sight of all these amazing things: the colours, the freedom, the playfulness, the unconventional, the experiment, the intuitive… I hardly knew where to look next.

It was overwhelming – all those hundreds of artworks in countless variations. Oil paintings, work on paper, sculptures of all types and sizes that dripped with passion… in forty years they had lost none of their power, on the contrary. I stood there rooted to the spot and had goosebumps all over.

That moment of amazement was at an exhibition in De Nieuwe Kerk, Dam Square in 1988, I was so inspired by all those art-pieces; at that moment Cobra gained my very interest.

I am grateful that our Ambassade Hotel Collection, including our signed books (over 5.000) and guest books, has found such a beautiful location on Amsterdam’s Herengracht and Singel, which is now accessible to a wide audience.”

AMBASSADE ART GALLERY
We warmly invite you to the Ambassade Art Gallery, a new cultural initiative of the Ambassade Hotel. At the Ambassade Hotel, art takes on a prominent role: the hotel owns an impressive CoBrA-art collection, with over 800 artworks on display in all public areas and in all rooms.

You are most welcome to attend the upcoming events in the Ambassade Art Gallery, part of the Ambassade Hotel, located in the heart of Amsterdam along the famous Herengracht canal.

Various exhibitions are planned to take place in this vibrant new venue, displaying works by Eugiène Brands and Hyland Mather, among others.

COBRA ART
Seized by the expression, the management of the Ambassade Hotel started with the collection of Cobra art in late 2001. At the time of writing the collection contains more than 800 works of art.

The goal is to allow the collection to grow into a comprehensive and complete overview of Cobra; a unique, post-war art movement with members throughout Europe, including Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky and Karel Appel.

In addition, the Ambassade Hotel owns some late 19th-century works by leading figures from the Amsterdam Impressionists movement: Isaac Israëls and George Hendrik Breitner.

LITERATURE
In the Library Bar you will find a unique collection of signed books by authors who have all stayed at the Ambassade Hotel: more than 5000 of them. The Ambassade Hotel has traditionally maintained close links with publishers in Amsterdam and the surrounding areas.

Many of these publishing houses, as well as some of Amsterdam’s best-known bookshops and authors’ cafés, are located within walking distance of the Ambassade Hotel. Although authors have long been staying at the Ambassade Hotel, the aforementioned collection of signed books was not started until the year 1986.

The Ambassade Hotel owes this interesting collection to the fact that Dutch publishers generally book their foreign authors into the Ambassade Hotel for the launch of the Dutch translation of their books.

THE LITERAIRE SALON
Since 2016, the Ambassade Hotel has been organizing the Literaire Salon @ Ambassade Hotel on a monthly basis, in collaboration with producer and media-artist Babeth M. VanLoo.

A journalist or writer holds a one-hour dialogue with an author about a book, oeuvre or a (topical) theme, after which there is the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. Every edition of the Literary Salon is followed by a festive drink and a signing session by the author.

Previous guests include Dick Swaab, Judith Herzberg, Remco Campert, Annejet van der Zijl, Murat Isik, Arnon Grunberg, Tommy Wieringa, Connie Palmen, Abdelkader Benali, Jan Siebelink, Femke Halsema, David Sedaris and Tom Lanoye.

Please bear in mind that the Salons are generally held in Dutch. Twice a year de Muzikale Salon is organized. This is alternately provided by violinist Svenja Staats and string orchestra Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

NEAR THE JORDAAN DISTRICT
At just a 5-minute walk away from the Ambassade Hotel you will find the famous “Jordaan” area. Originally a working-class neighbourhood, the Jordaan has become one of the most expensive, upscale locations in the Netherlands.

It is home to many art galleries, particularly for modern art, and is also dotted with speciality shops and restaurants. No other town district in the Netherlands has been as sung about, described and romanced as the Amsterdam Jordaan.

Over one hundred years ago, there was apparently a miller who produced paper from old rags on the waters of the Leuvenumse Beek. He checked every single rag to remove the copper buttons. These he saved until he had a large box full. He then sold the buttons and used the money to build, on the crest of the loveliest hilltop in the woods, a house he christened “Het Roode Koper”.

THE HISTORY
The fact is that in 1912 the Count of Limburg-Stirum founded the estate as it still exists today: a villa with outbuildings and a landscaped garden in English style. When the Count became the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, new residents passed along in the 30s and 40s, including the Patijn family.

After WWII, the estate was purchased by the Dutch National Trust, which primarily wanted to preserve the 2700 hectares of surrounding woodland. In 1947, the Van der Werf family took possession of Het Roode Koper with the idea of sharing this special spot with others by designating it as a hotel. The Sörensen family is the third generation of the family that now manages the estate

BEAUTIFUL NATURE
Due to the location of our estate, deep in the Veluwe forest, Het Roode Koper maintains close contact with The National Trust. Together we ensure that the forests surrounding us are accessible to our guests and we protect wildlife and nature. With our nature guide Gerrit Rekers you can take private walks through the Leuvenumse Bos. He tells you everything about the flora and fauna and knows the best places to spot wildlife.

WALK OVER THE ESTATE
The estate is 9 hectares in size. As soon as you enter the driveway, you are far away from everyday life. After you have passed the game grid, you will see the characteristic villa. A walk on the estate takes you to the rear garden with a beautiful view of the villa.

Via the sweet-scented rose garden you walk along the heated outdoor swimming pool and via the ‘Poolse huis’ to the ‘Koetshuis’, ‘Voorhuis’, ‘Manegehuis’ and finally the horse stables. The tennis court is hidden among the rhododendrons.

THE CHARACTERISTIC VILLA
The villa, located on a hill, is the monumental building that looms up in front of you at the end of the driveway. With two lounges with a fireplace, different style rooms, a bar and the restaurant, the villa is the central meeting point on the estate. There are eleven hotel rooms here.

THE KOETSHUIS: PEACE AND QUIET AND PRIVACY
The Koetshuis is very suitable for families with (grand)children or for business gatherings. Surrounded by trees, the Koetshuis offers a great deal of privacy. On the large private patio, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in the midday sun together with your guests. The Koetshuis has 11 rooms, including 3 Grand Luxe, 4 De Luxe and 4 Comfort.

THE POOLSE HUIS IN THE WOODS
The Poolse Huis, located on the Poolse road, in the middle of the woods, was once the butler’s residence adjacent to the villa and is now a luxury guest lodge. Ideal for a stay with your family, friends or a small gathering. And at dusk you could be surprised with the Veluwe wildlife that passes by. The Poolse Huis has a total of 4 rooms, of which 1 De Luxe and 3 Comfort rooms.

On the spot where the gardener’s residence used to be, the Voorhuis has been rebuilt in the style of the estate. This guest lodge offers four fantastic rooms with patio doors that open onto the woods. Due to its location adjacent to the equestrian centre, the Voorhuis is a favourite among guests who come to stay with their horse.

THE STABLES
You’d like to go out and about with your horse? You can stable your horse in our own horse premises, which features eight stables for visiting horses – who will be fully taken care of. After a lovely trot through the woods, your horse runs around in the paddock.

THE HISTORY
In 1632 the architect Jacob van Campen was commissioned to build a stone theatre. Monday, the 11th of May 1772, turned out to be a black day in Dutch history. During a performance, the building caught fire and completely burned down.

In 1773 the site was sold to one of the Regents of the Roman Catholic Church charities, known as the Old & Poor People’s Office. This foundation retained ownership until 1998 when the building was completely renovated. It reopened as a luxury boutique hotel, in 1999.

48 HOURS IN AMSTERDAM
Best thing after waking up is to treat yourself with a coffee in Oud West at “Trakteren”. Stroll through the nine streets in direction of Spui and visit the American book center or Hoogstins Bookstore in the Kinkerstraat. Feeling a bit hungry? Enjoy some sourdough bread at Bakery Levain et le vin or if you prefer bagels, try one at Flo’s Appetizing!

Rent a bike and cycle towards the Noordermarkt. At Saturdays it is worth to visit the Farmers Market for fresh biological products or go around the corner to the Lindengrachtmarkt for your weekend groceries. On Monday morning the Noordermarkt has flea market for vintage clothing and other unique products.

Have a delicious sandwich at Smallworld or sit on the terrace of Café Thijssen and order a “tosti”. In the mood for a local beer? Café de Tuin in the Jordaan is perfect to have some drinks with friends before you go to an early concert at Melkweg or Paradiso.

Of course an Ajax match at the Johan Cruyff Arena can’t be missed from the list. Have dinner after at Kien at Witte the Withplein and end the evening in Cafe ‘t Loosje or Club NL.

In need of a good coffee to start this day? Take a coffee to go at Lot61 and visit one of the many boutiques in the 9-streets or one of my favourite shops; Fillipa K, Baskets, Sneaker District, Paul Smith.

If you would like to take something home for your loved ones, buy some flowers at the Pompon or go to the Logie for a beautiful bottle of wine. Reload during brunch at Wilhelmina and try the Reuben or Floris sandwich! After, take a long walk in the beautiful Vondelpark or just sit on a bench an watch the day go by.

Have some “bitterballen” or a Special beer at Brewery ‘t Ij / Blauwe Theehuis. Too early for a beer? They have some delicious hot chocolate as well.

Bar Parry is a perfect bar to start your evening with some good wine and some snacks. For dinner go to the Golden Brown bar which is one of the hottest spots on the Westside of Amsterdam and it’s known for their good Thai food. Or if you are a fan of Ramen, try some at Betsubara or Otemba!

The Engelenburg Castle is a Manor house in a 230- hectares-estate located in Brummen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Our castle hotel is a national monument in the Netherlands.

The castle dates back to the Middle Ages and it is located amidst elegant vistas of landscaped gardens and old trees in a private forest. It was destroyed in the 80-years- war (1568-1648) by the Spanish troops led by Count Hendrik van den Berg. Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye II rebuilt the castle and brought it back to its former glory.

In 1591 Crown Prince Maurits stayed at the Engelenburg Castle during the battle of the IJssel, which signifies the importance of the house and its family. In 1828 the castle was substantially restored and rebuilt to a convenient manor house with hand-carved fireplaces, high ceilings and sumptuous rooms.

The Engelenburg Castle has been used as a private manor house until the second world war. As from 1947 the Twentsche Bank bought the estate and used it as a holiday destination for its employees.

In 1988 the Engelenburg was extensively refurbished and converted, by Antonius de Lange, from an abandoned private residence into one of the Netherland’s most exquisite hotel, restaurant, golf course and conference center.

The façade of the castle is symmetrical and consists of seven bays. The castle is surrounded by a moat for protection. In the 19th century it was extended to today’s English style existing gardens, presenting an ideal and tranquil view of the tamed nature.

Shrubberies with graveled walks, flowers in the skirts of the sweeping planted beds and tree plantations satisfy any botanical curiosity. Among the outbuildings there is a 17th century coach house in the north part of the driveway, which was rebuilt in the 19th century.

The -unchanged as of the Schimmelpenninck period- driveway from the castle offers a visual axis to a characteristic point. in this case the Old tower – or St. Pancratius Church.

THE COUNTRY ESTATE
This estate has been open to the public since 1900. The establishment of the castle lays back to the 8th century. Discoveries of oak poles and foundations in the cellars of the castle, prove its long life existence throughout the centuries.

The appearance of the estate had been influenced by its various owners through the centuries. Around 1828 the estate was designed in accordance to the English landscape styling. The winding path, the large curved ponds and the unique visible horizon are typical for this style and they exist till today.

In 1910, the Queen’s Commissioner of Gelderland became the owner of the Engelenburg. In 1911, he had a garden laid out (designed by the famous landscape architect L. Springer) on both sides of the driveway. After the war, the estate was owned by the Twentsche Bank (later ABN) and became the holiday resort for its employees.

In the mid-seventies the estate was no longer used and became vacant for many years. After years of decay, it was extensively refurbished and converted by Antonius de Lange, from a private though abandoned residence, into one of the Netherlands’ most exquisite country hotel, restaurant, golf course and conference center.

Numerous restorations have taken place to the castle, in order to bring back its previous charm. Take a walk through the woods and park and you will fully enjoy the atmosphere of this magnificent and unique estate. We have set out three beautiful routes of 0.7, 1.6 and 3 km. “

SERRE SUITE
A wonderfully relaxing, calm environment that captures the romance of gracious country living, this magnificent suite has beautiful views over the lawns and the castle’s moat. Relax in complete privacy in the secluded garden and balcony deck or indulge in the private outdoor Jacuzzi – another feature that makes this suite very special.

The interior is luxurious and comfortable, with a elegantly furnished bedroom. The spacious bathroom offers a duo shower, bath and separate toilet. The suite’s spectacular sitting room (40 m2) is a conservatory where you can enjoy both the sun during the day and the stars at night.

ORANGERIE SUITE
Our most beautiful rooms, built in 1828, have spacious bathrooms with a separate shower and are located on the ground floor. These comfortable suites are extremely well equipped and each suite has a private, south-facing terraced garden with a water feature and views of the golf course.

The enormous windows facing the lush gardens together with the 7-meter high ceilings make these rooms very special. The decor and potted palms in the room serve to create the colonial feel.

DELUXE ROOM
Our beautiful Deluxe rooms boast generous proportions and breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery. These rooms are contemporary in style, but with a colonial touch. All rooms are decorated differently with fabrics, wall papers and furniture from Nobilis and Designers Guild to create their own unique atmosphere.

The Deluxe rooms in the Cape Dutch house have their own personalised interior design, some with an African theme. The beautiful bathrooms are fitted with a bathtub and separate shower, toilet, hairdryer, bathrobe and environmentally friendly toiletries.

COMFORT ROOM
In the Comfort rooms, situated in our Coach House and the Conservatory, you can experience an historic atmosphere, combined with the comfort and facilities that are so characteristic of modern times. THE SERRE RESTAURANT

As though, herbs are coming from our own gardens, game from our estate and fish from the Ijssel river and nearby lakes and sea. THE WINE CELLAR
During the 16th century, the Count Schimmelpenninck van den Oye used to taste his wines here before exporting them to the Baltic countries. Today, our beautiful wine cellar stocks over 5000 bottles of wine, while its ambiance creates the perfect setting for wine tastings.

Our sommelier travelled regularly to South Africa (where the current owners of the castle have lived) to select the finest of the new wines for our guests. Below you will find the wine list of our castle. Wines are changing regularly, for the up to date wine list you can always contact our hotel.

LOUNGE & BARS
The historic Lounge is housed in what used to be the office of the van Citters family. With its fireplace and its well-known Scottish Single Malt collection, it is only natural that the whisky nosing and tasting take place here. Although afternoon tea can be served in any of the public rooms, the Lounge Bar seems to be our guests’ favorite!

Nevertheless, the Engelenburg Bar offers also a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy a cool draft beer, a cup of coffee, a quick lunch snack or choose from a wide range of cocktails and digestives. Enjoy serenity and relaxation either in the bars inside the manor house or outside at the terrace in the courtyard or the beautiful terrace overlooking the moat.

Enjoy world-class golf on a superb nine-hole course or at the Golf Academy. From the friendly welcome right through to the drive home, everything you could possibly ask for in a day or weekend’s golf, can be found at the Engelenburg Castle: the magnificent course, luxurious locker rooms and the Netherlands’ most beautiful “clubhouse” that serves great food and drinks.

Threading through high ridges, the course offers lovely woodland settings, lochs and ditches, water hazards, as well as many moorland characteristics, an excellent choice for a golf holiday in the Netherlands.

With your very first approach shot, you’ll find out all about the course. If you’ve driven straight and long from the tee, you will have what looks like a simple pitch to the elevated green.

But you must be sure to select the correct club, because the shot is always a little longer than you think, with the wind over the putting surface often stronger than you can feel it from the fairway. Donald Steel did not design an easy course at Engelenburg Castle.

Selecting the right club for each approach shot is the secret on Engelenburg’s golf course. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the eastern part of the Netherlands, with century-old Oak trees, water hazards, the third tee on top of the 18th century ice cellar and the sweeping views from the tees all around towards the Manor House.

CYCLING
Pedalling through the woods and heathlands, you are one with nature as every little detail catches your eye. Take in the carpets of bluebells, follow the roe deer spoor and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive black woodpecker among the woodland birds.

Marvel at the beautiful gardens of a hidden manor or find yourself eye to eye with a herd of red deer at dawn’s first light. The variety and abundance of natural beauty will enchant you time and again.

HIKING
The Veluwe is a fantastic area for hiking. The ever-changing landscape, the tranquillity and open space, as well as the rich cultural history make walking in the Veluwe an endlessly fascinating experience.

Take a guided walk with the Veluwe Rangers across the Kootwijkerzand or join in a Nordicwalking excursion, a more strenuous activity that involves walking with modified ski poles.

EQUESTRIAN SPORTS
In collaboration with the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation (KNHS), a horse riding and carriage driving route has been plotted: Enjoy the Ride . A magnificent route over both paved and unpaved paths near Brummen.

Oeken, Hall and Empe. If you would like to bring your own horse, it can stay at Stal te Bokkel (Stables). You can also take horseback riding lessons or rent a horse. The nature reserve Veluwezoom, nearby Stal te Bokkel, is ideal for a relaxing horseback ride.

WATER SPORTS
Take a boat ride down the IJssel River in style. Green embankments, a meandering river and the historic richness of the old Hanseatic cities make the IJssel River the most beautiful boating route of the Netherlands.

The Jan van Ghent cutter make your boating trip even more of a unique experience. Boating on the most beautiful river of the Netherlands, the IJssel River. Take note! The boat ride offers you a completely different experience from what you’re used to. You won’t travel on a cruise ship or a noisy canal tour boat, but on a fun, cosy and luxurious cutter!

Active on and around water. The boating area is on the Apeldoorns Kanaal (the channel of Apeldoorn) or on the Berkel River. You can combine your canoe trip with various other activities. We will gladly make a fitting programme for you.

NORDIC WALKING
On our estate and around Brummen are 5 Nordic Walking routes. These five are connected with each other and do take you through the countryside and the forest. The routes vary in distance from 6 to 9 km. But these routes are not to difficult as our countryside is flat.

WHISKY NOSING & TASTING
The English Lounge of the Engelenburg is the Mecca for Scottish Single Malt enthusiasts. Our whisky cabinet has the largest selection in the Netherlands.

During the nosing and tasting you will be introduced to several Single Malt Whiskies, which you can taste and review with regard to colour, smell and taste. The whisky can be served with a salmon snack. The tasting session will last approximately one or one and a half hour (a minimum of 10 persons).

WINE TASTING
Our wine expert will guide you in our medieval winecellar through the world of South African wines. During the programme you will be able to taste several wines from different regions of the Cape. A blind tasting competition is part of the programme. Cheese and French bread can also be served. (minimum of 10 persons)

IJSSEL RIVER LANDSCAPE
The rivers in the Netherlands are currently restrained by dykes, meaning floods are limited to a minimum. The consequence is that rivers barely affect the adjacent landscape. In th past, this used to be different. The rivers curved and weaved through the Dutch landscape.

The rivers were highly dynamic; occasionally the rivers would flood large sections of the embankments, sometimes even far inland. The processes initiated by the rivers shaped the landscape and influenced the local vegetation and animals. As was the IJssel River valley at the edge of Brummen, which is only a few kilometres away from Engelenburg Castle.

The rivers in the Netherlands are increasingly contained by the building of more dykes. The rivers are losing volume to properly drain the water. The chance of flooding is increasing. By applying different expansion techniques, rivers are able to drain the water again.

Examples of projects to increase the drainage capacity include: dyke relocation, flood plain excavation, and tidal marsh restoration. We have many beautiful bike paths and walking routes along the IJssel River, through the flood plains and with a ferry from Brummen to Bronkhorst and/or from Olburgen to Dieren.

THE ACHTERHOEK
The Achterhoek is the most eastern part of the province of Gelderland. The region is bordered by the IJssel River to the west. The Achterhoek is closer than you would think. From Engelenburg Castle you can reach the centre of the Achterhoek in less than fifteen minutes!

As soon as you cross the IJssel River and walk/drive on a country lane in the Achterhoek, you will immediately notice the difference. The road is not straight. It winds past large trees and woods and around farms. The view constantly changes. Sometimes you will look at woods, other times at meadows. It is no longer typically Dutch.

No, as you continue to drive, the farms disappear behind rows of hedges and groups of trees. It’s a rolling landscape as far as the horizon. Suddenly you will have a panoramic view again. It is like a play with many different backdrops. That’s why the landscape of the Achterhoek is also called a ‘theatrical landscape’.

The entire landscape is still present. It was laid out and designed over hundreds of years by local farmers. The Achterhoek has many events, exhibits and unique places of interest. In addition to the events, the Achterhoek also has loads of fun attractions and many biking and walking opportunities.

OPEN CASTLE GARDENS
In the vicinity of Castle Engelenburg are many beautiful gardens that you can visit. Please let us introduce you to the beauty of these gardens which with much love and passion created by its residents. The gardens are often to visit in season for a few days during the week and there are guided tours. For groups usually alternative arrangements are made.

If you enter in the gardens of Middachten, you are immediately overwhelmed by the ‘authenticity’ of the castle; the grass parterre with the borders, the images, the moat and the castle.

Look to your left or right, you will see you from one corner of your eyes the espaliered fruit along the historic garden wall and from the other the pink lead with climbing roses and clematis.

GALLERY AALDERING CLASSIC AUTOMOBILES
You will find Gallery Aaldering at the edge of Brummen, a unique concept in the world of classic/sports cars and lifestyle. Here you will find three floors with more than 300 magnificent classics and old-timers on display, as well as a cosy lunchroom.

ZUTPHEN
Zutphen is a city with many qualifications: Monument Town, City of Justice, Anthroposophical Town, Hanseatic Town and Graphical Town. No matter in what way a visitor views or experiences Zutphen, all of these qualifications are deserved.

The Hanseatic town (with 47,000 residents) is beautifully situated along the IJssel River with an impressive facade of stately buildings. It is also closely situated to the Veluwe nature areas and the magnificent natural scenery of the Gelderse Achterhoek.

Zutphen is a tantalising city: a city with a rich (Hanseatic) history and of centuries-old historic buildings. It is also a city with peaceful courtyards and cosy terraces.

Historic merchant houses restored to their former beauty, picturesque courtyards, and impressive churches, a section of the old city wall, and of course the Librije with its famous collection of antique books, testament to a rich past, of which many stories can be told.

Zutphen has two unique museums: the Stedelijk Museum and the Henriette Polak Museum. In 2016, these museums (along with the municipal archaeology department) moved to the national monument Hof van Heeckeren. This city palace is located at the ’s-Gravenhof in the historical centre of Zutphen.

BRONKHORST
Take a walking tour through the smallest town of the Netherlands with all its history. The name Bronkhorst is mentioned for the first time in the illustrious history of Gelderland approximately around the year 1000. Bronkhorst was granted city rights in 1482.

The most significant preserved antiquities are a chapel and several buildings with stepped gables, including houses with woodwork in the outer walls. It’s as if you’ve stepped into another world. You will experience a holiday feeling in the truest sense of the word.

You can go sightseeing on your own or with an experienced tour guide. The town has many unique shops such as an antiques dealer, a goldsmith, a sculpture garden country shop and a gallery with precious stones. In Rha, you can taste Bronckhorst beer and take a tour of the brewery.

THE VELUWE STEAM TRAIN
The train rides between Apeldoorn and Dieren. The old-fashioned steam train leads you through an ever-changing landscape. In the summer months, the steam train runs on a regular time schedule.

A very attractive day package is also available: a boat tour from Zutphen to Dieren on the IJssel River, followed by a trip on the steam train to Apeldoorn and back to Zutphen with an Diesel train. The steam train can be rented for special occasions by groups on any day desired.

THE HISTORY
Hotel Estheréa was founded by Maria Flieger-Gruyters. She decided to move to Amsterdam following the death of her husband during World War Two. She looked after a guest house on behalf of its owner, who had been forced to go underground. She was given the option to purchase the building when it became apparent the owner hadn’t survived the war.

This was the start of Estheréa. The guest house – which started with just 12 rooms – continued to expand every time Maria had the opportunity to buy an adjoining property. This allowed it to develop into the hotel it is today.

The guest house underwent a complete transformation during the years which followed. The hotel is now run by Maria’s granddaughter Esther and her team. The hotel has been completely renovated and is included on UNESCO’s world heritage list.

The facilities are extensive, including a bar which has been named after the founder Maria and which is open 24 hours a day, a gym and all the rooms have been designed completely in line with the Estheréa style.

It’s therefore no longer an old-fashioned guest house, but a fully-fledged boutique hotel, where every room is truly unique! The hotel is also constantly changing, the rooms are given a regular makeover and nothing stays the same, apart from the very distinct Estheréa style.

During its 80 years of existence, Hotel Estheréa has grown from a small guest house to a luxury gem with 91 rooms and two suites. A true empire, founded and run by strong women and a fantastic team with a vision.

THE SUITES

The pink suite is 30 m² in size and a little more intimate than the ‘van Oranje’ suite. The suite boasts fantastic views across one of the green patios and the pond and will guarantee utter relaxation.

FAMILY ROOM
Are you visiting Amsterdam with the whole family? Our family rooms can accommodate a maximum of 3 people. These rooms are located at the rear of the premises, boasting views of the Spuistraat or on the inside of the building with views of our green patio.

You can also opt for booking two connecting rooms. This is only possible with the Luxury rooms. The family rooms are naturally also equipped with all our standard facilities, including: a luxury bathroom with a hairdryer and L’Occitane products, a refrigerator, safe, Wi-Fi and television.

CANAL ROOM

CLASSIC ROOM
Feel like taking a step back from the city’s hustle and bustle for a while? Then the Classic room is the one for you. These rooms are located on the inside of the premises. You can enjoy lovely views across one of our green patios and it’s the perfect place to relax.

Each room is unique and designed with an eye for detail. The Classic rooms are a minimum of 13 m² in size and boast all standard features, including: a luxury bathroom with a hairdryer and L’Occitane products, a refrigerator, safe, Wi-Fi and television.

MEETINGS
Looking for a special meeting location? Hotel Estheréa has three stylish meeting rooms on offer for groups of up to 18 people. The rooms are equipped with business essentials, such as: notepads and pens.

But we can also offer all manner of delicacies, including: mineral water, sweet snacks and an extensive coffee and tea buffet. We would also take great delight in organising your breakfast, lunch or drinks, either before, during or after your meeting. Please inform us of your requirements and we will furnish you with a suitable offer.

THE LIBRARY
This intimate meeting room is suitable for a group of a maximum of 6 people. The Library is an inspiring place for your meeting or gathering. The room features two windows with views across the inner courtyard.

THE HERENKAMER
The Herenkamer will provide you with all possible conveniences. This meeting room boasts three large windows with views of the canal. The room allows for two different setups – square or U-shaped – creating space for 13 to 16 people.

The Herenkamer has a warm and stylish design, ideal for a meeting in just a little bit of a different setting. We can also offer the option of combining the Library and Herenkamer into one larger room.

THE SUITE VAN ORANJE
Are you planning a big meeting? Then the Suite van Oranje may be the perfect one for you. This room allows for a total of 16 to 18 people, depending on the setup. A U-shaped setup can cater for a total of 17 people.

If you opt for the boardroom (square) setup, the maximum number of people is 18. This spacious meeting room has three large windows, boasting views of the Spuistraat and is equipped with all possible conveniences.

AMSTERDAM
