Originally built as Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle and his wife Zetta, it was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood elite. Legend has it that iconic actress Elizabeth Montgomery had her first marriage at the Red Barn.

The property also has had incarnations as Catalina Palms, El Rancho Lodge and now Sparrows Lodge. The Lodge was fully restored in 2013 and many of the original buildings are still in use with modern updates retaining the charm of the original Red Barn.

Sparrows Lodge is a completely restored 1950s retreat. You will be welcomed roadside with a simple hand-painted sign with two Sparrows.

The Lodge has a modern rustic vibe that carries through to our rooms, communal barn, outdoor fire pit and vegetable garden, accented by a collection of fine art including works by Ruscha, Kelly, Katz & Baldessari.

The 20 rooms feature exposed beam ceilings, russet red walls, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles and butterfly chairs. Swiss army blankets top plush mattresses, and instead of closets you’ll find a metal footlocker along with hooks and hangers.

Our bathrooms feature rain showers, and many include horse troughs as bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. All rooms have AC/Heat and ceiling fans. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.

Poolside Rooms
Poolside rooms are approx. 300 sq. feet. They feature a queen sized bed & open shower. All rooms feature unique artwork and a private patio. Bathrooms feature rain showers, Grown Alchemist toiletries, and some Poolside rooms feature steel horse trough bathtubs.

All rooms have AC/Heat and ceiling fans. Light continental breakfast, free wifi, and use of Sole townie bikes are available. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.

Garden Rooms 
The Garden rooms are approx. 400 sq. feet, secluded, and located in the garden section of the property. All rooms feature a king size bed, rain showers, Grown Alchemist toiletries, and unique artwork.

The Cabin
The Cabin is our most secluded accommodation. The suite is approximately 500 sq. feet and features a full sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee brewer, and kitchen sink. It features a dining/living area separated from the bedroom.

Owner’s Suite
The Owner’s Suite is our most exclusive accommodation. Size is approximately 800 sq. feet with high ceilings and an open loft like space. The suite features a separate living area, gas fireplace, king size bed and unique artwork.

The Barn Kitchen
The Barn Kitchen offers a refined take on rustic American cuisine. Focusing on influences from the nearby Coachella Valley, the Barn Kitchen brings small local farms and the unique aspects of the desert to classic American favorites.

We aim to create simple, uncomplicated cuisine by showcasing fresh California ingredients. By creating a communal dining atmosphere, we invite all of our guests to make meaningful connections and savor each experience.

We serve a simple to-go style breakfast for hotel guests only, which consists of banana bread, yogurt, granola, fruit, toast, and La Vittoria Coffee. The Barn Kitchen is open daily to the public for lunch from 11 am – 4 pm and dinner from 5pm – 8pm.

The bar remains open until 11 pm every day, serving a selection of microbrews, wine, and spirits. In the evening, gather around the fire pit for star gazing and smores.

Massage Tent
We have a humble massage tent with 2 treatment areas. It is an open-air massage tent designed to make the experience unique and feel like you are a part of our outdoor gardens. You will most likely hear birds chirping, fountains trickling, and the smell of burning sage.

That said, you may also hear noise from a neighbor (or their dog) or other guests enjoying the property. We love it, but know it might not be perfect for everyone. In-room massage is also available.

Weddings & Events
There is a certain magic that is present on Sparrows’ grounds, which make it an ideal location for weddings, events and corporate retreats. The communal setting and desert ranch backdrop provide an atmosphere that creates lasting memories for all who attend.

HISTORY
The Colony Palms Hotel’s rich and colorful history established it as an iconic part of Palm Springs and over the years it has been host to Hollywood’s elite, mobsters, athletes, film producers, gamblers and politicians.

THE 1930’S 

Originally dubbed the Colonial House, the Spanish Colonial style hotel was built and opened in 1936 by owner Al Wertheimer, a reputed mobster and member of the infamous Purple Gang.

THE 1940’S 

After World War II, the hotel was renamed the Howard Manor under the glamorous new ownership of Robert Howard, son of Charles Howard, owner of the championship racehorse Seabiscuit, and his wife Andrea Leeds Howard, an Academy Award-nominated actress. The hotel remained a haven for Hollywood stars in Palms Springs for many years.

THE 1950’S 

Annie and Dave Margolis acquired the hotel from Robert Howard on a handshake deal made between Dave and Robert over cocktails one evening at the hotel. The highly social couple continued operating the hotel under the Howard Manor, a name that had become synonymous with Palm Springs glamour.

TODAY
The Colony Palms Hotel is re-imagined under designer/Hotelier Steve Hermann as it is transformed into one of California’s premier luxury hotels. Mr. Hermann’s private residence while on property. This 3500 square foot, two story house, defines opulent living. Featuring a large living room, separate large family room with 100” flatscreen T.V., billiards table, dinning room, fully equipped kitchen, huge master suite with steam shower, and private front and back yard.

Finished with hand chipped limestone floors, hand embroidered drapes, and luxurious furnishings, you will choose to stay here when only the absolute best will do. Can be configured with an additional bedroom to create a 4,000 square foot two bedroom residence. Afterwards presidential suites will seem so quaint in comparison.

THE HERMANN SUITE
This is the master suite of the Hermann Residence that can be enjoyed separately when you don’t need the entire house. Very large at 1000 square feet, it features a sitting area, large private veranda overlooking the property, and a large bathroom with double vanity and huge steam shower. Absolutely elegant and refined, you will be ensconced in luxury.

BUNGALOWS

A DESERT OASIS
A quick spin from L.A., Palm Springs was truly born as a weekender getaway for industry players, movie stars, mafia and moguls when Hollywood’s two-hour rule kept contract actors on a very short leash.

Originally built in 1929 by Frank Pershing amid the pink grapefruit, ficus, and skinny palm trees with the (in)famous bungalows soon to follow, the Estrella motor inn became as much an iconic part of this first golden age as the smoke and tipple, tennis and golf, and the lounge acts at Chi Chi club.

Red-carpet entry to these casitas was common for faces like Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Errol Flynn. (Crawford famously demanded french bread and 7 packs of cigarettes–3 opened–in hers.)

In the 1960s and 1970s, the property expanded with low-profile additions and a hefty dose of the era’s Diamonds Are Forever-meets-shag-n-mirrors cool–and a game of Twister in every room.

The Kor Group developed assumed the property in the early aughts. Never restrained to any one period, designer Kelly Wearstler earned recognition for her infusion of fresh, free style, from larger than life jolts of color and eye-pleasing symmetries to more organic California textures for a playful, modern glow.
