THE HISTORY
The name of the hotel stems from the ancient office of The Chamberlain of the City of London, dating back to at least 1237. Back then, The Chamberlain of the City of London was responsible for the financial affairs of London, such as collecting and distributing revenues within the city.

He was also responsible for the Chamber of London, where the city’s money was stored. The Chamberlain was appointed by the Crown, and his term began on Midsummer Day. Today, the Chamberlain is one of the three official trustees of the City of London’s local and private trust funds. Currently, the position is held by Dr Peter Kane.

The building was built in 1910, during the Edwardian era. It was then converted into a pub at the turn of the millennium, in 2000. However, the Edwardian facade has been maintained, with Dutch gables on the roof, pilasters and square-paned windows that are identifying features of Edwardian architecture clearly visible on the exterior of the hotel.

The hotel ties in this classical feel with the traditional British homemade meals, and elevates it with the modern execution that customers have come to expect and love.

The Chamberlain is on Minories street, close to the Tower of London. Minories is so named after Minories Holy Trinity, a former civil parish. In medieval England, a minoress was a nun. The present-day Minories street is a two-way street and is part of the A1211 road between the Whitechapel and Barbican.

THE MINORIES
The City of London, although a major business centre with the headquarters of big corporates such as Unilever, is also a huge tourist attraction. Some of the most famous places in England can be found in the City of London, and The Chamberlain is centrally located to it all just north of Tower Bridge on a street called The Minories.

The street gets its name from the Abbey of the Minoresses of St. Clare without Aldgate, where a “minoress” was a nun in the Second Order of the Order of Friars Minor. Tower Bridge – the iconic landmark and somewhat of “an engineering marvel” – is the closest attraction to The Chamberlain, literally eight minutes away.

Head towards Haydon St on Minories then take a sharp left towards Tower Hill. Continue on Tower Hill and in a few minutes, you’ll be facing this monumental structure. Other famous places to visit include Temple Church, the Tower of London and Shad Thames.

Tower Gateway train station is nearby, just three minutes along Minories. Fenchurch train station is also nearby. Our closest tube stops are Aldgate station, north of the hotel, and Tower Hill station towards south on Trinity Square.

Both stations are about a five-minute walk away, making The Chamberlain a perfect base from which to explore the city. If you’re driving to the hotel, you will find paid parking nearby.

THE BRIDGE THEATRE
Just a five-minute drive from The Chamberlain, The Bridge Theatre is a great place for a family night out. The theatre focuses on the commissioning and production of new shows, as well as staging some classics such as Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Occasionally, The Bridge hosts once-off events like live podcast tapings, intimate music sessions with renowned singers and songwriters and conversations and shows on various topics. Be sure to keep yourself updated on what’s on at The Bridge through their website so that you don’t miss out.

THE TOWER OF LONDON
This iconic landmark is a mere stone-throw away from The Chamberlain. The Tower of London is very popular visitors to London as it rich in the city’s history and also houses the Crown Jewels.

Other interesting rooms within the tower are the prison cell Sir Walter Raleigh, commonly known as the Bloody Tower, as well the Chapel of St John and the Royal Armories. The Tower is open daily until 17:30

SHAD THAMES
If you leave the hotel and drive towards Tower Bridge, then turn off on Queen Elizabeth Street, you will in about 8 minutes find yourself in the breath-taking neighbourhood of Shad Thames.

Historically a busy warehouse area, Shad Thames has been rejuvenated into a quiet picturesque neighbourhood that’s great for taking selfies or a full professional shoot.
Butler’s Wharf

Take a stroll along this historic wharf and glimpse some spectacular views of the Tower Bridge. The wharf has been revived and all the buildings lining it are Grade II listed. It’s especially beautiful towards sunset.

THE TOWER BRIDGE
A 10 minute walk from the hotel brings you to Tower Bridge, one of the most recognisable structures in the world. Tower Bridge was built over 125 years ago to ease road traffic while maintaining river access to the London docks, built with giant moveable roadways that lift up for passing ships. You can visit this iconic landmark to discover the history of the bridge and how it works today.
