Jericoacoara
Jericoacoara is an idyllic peaceful fishing village situated amongst sand dunes on the east coast of Céarà, approximately 3 degrees south of the equator where it enjoys 320 sunny days a year, as well as warm air and water temperatures the whole year round.
Voted as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world by the Washington post, Jeri, as it is affectionately called by the locals, is surrounded by sweet-water lagoons, a calm ocean and enormous sand dunes from which one can admire the most beautiful sunset in Brazil.
In 1984 Jericoacoara was declared a protected area and in 2002 it became a National Park. This brought restrictions on new construction and greater preservation regulations.
For example, there are no paved roads, only sand and buildings can have a maximum of two floors. Today Jeri is known for its incredible beaches as well as a place of ecological protection and a paradise for nature lovers and wind sport enthusiasts.
The steady wind between July and November makes Jericoacoara one of the preferred destinations in the world for water sports such as: windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing and catamaran.
It is also an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing walk on a virgin beach, go sandboarding in the dunes, horseback riding, practice Yoga, get a therapeutic massage and explore the dunes and lagoons with a buggy or quad bike.
The distance between Jeri and larger cities and its remoteness have contributed to the protection of the beaches and villages from mass tourism. Just 20 years ago Jeri was a fishing village with almost no contact with modern civilization.
Electricity was sparsely provided by diesel generators and the only public lighting was the moon and stars. After being cited in the Washington Post, tourism grew rapidly and Jeri became one of the preferred destinations for celebrities seeking privacy.
Jericoacoara is host to numerous small, yet excellent, restaurants, bars and cafe’s where candle lit dinners and live music can be enjoyed. At sunset dozens of stands are set up on the beach offering cocktails prepared with tropical fruits.
Each evening visitors climb the enormous dune at the ocean’s edge to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on Brazil’s coast. After sunset experts in Capoeira, the traditional Brazilian martial art, put on a show and invite spectators to join in. Jeri also has a vibrant nightlife with bars and clubs open until the wee hours.
