Escape to our boutique hotel set on 100 acres of Virginia countryside located only minutes from downtown Charlottesville and the surrounding historic sites and award-winning wineries. Book your next romantic getaway, plan a girls trip, or gather your group for a retreat or celebration event.

The Clifton continues to accept reservations for overnight guests and we continue to maintain the safety of our guests and staff. We are so grateful to our guests! The 1799 restaurant is serving guests indoors, along with seating on our large outdoor terrace. We are open 5:30pm – 8:00pm Monday through Sunday.

Among the historic inns of Virginia, The Clifton’s heritage is truly unique. Our boutique hotel on the outskirts of Charlottesville was originally constructed in 1799 as a classic colonial-style home for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter and husband, Martha and Thomas Mann Randolph.

In the second half of the 19th century, the estate was officially given the name “Clifton” by the Wyatt family. In the Spring of 2018, the current owners and managers of The Clifton Inn engaged the award winning Blackberry Farm Design team to reimagine the Inn’s interiors with both an appreciation for past style and an eye toward the future.

The result is a chic contemporary take on a classic country estate – a dramatic yet romantic destination for family vacations, group getaways, romantic retreats, weddings and meetings steeped in the heritage and beauty of Charlottesville.

Incorporating mid-century details throughout all of its spaces, The Clifton includes 20 guest rooms spanning five late 18th and early 19th century buildings, a restaurant, bar and lounge, and wine cellar.

Updated amenities include an infinity pool and hot tub, and outdoor features include a private lake, walking trails, a croquet lawn and sprawling gardens that include a Chef’s garden for the restaurant. No matter where guests find themselves on the property, they will enjoy sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Jefferson’s Monticello.

Bousquet incorporates his classical French training while working with local Virginia products. He also identifies with his audience, both local patrons and visitors who come from all over the world.

The Clifton has a large cultivated garden at the culinary team’s disposal, as well as wild herbs, fruits and vegetables on our 100-acre property. The property is a foraging haven for chefs.

And Bousquet and his staff take full advantage of what nature has yielded when planning the menu for 1799 Restaurant. “Hopefully our guests experience as much as we can get out of the garden, as much really great quality local super fresh stuff that is as seasonal as possible,” Bousquet says. Bousquet says his favorite dish to prepare is foie gras so if you see that on the menu, it’s a must-try dish.
