The Portobello Hotel London is a luxurious boutique bolthole, with interiors that celebrate the bohemian spirit of Notting Hill & the Portobello Road market, with no two rooms the same, showcasing regency style with a Curious Hotels twist.

In the drawing room is also where you will find our honesty bar, featuring of course, Portobello Road gin and many more tipples, perfect for a drink before heading into town, or a nightcap before bed.

One of London’s most well-known luxury boutique hotels, it was founded in 1971 and ever since has been THE hotel for those in the know from the world of music, show business and fashion. It has hosted many famous faces over the years.

THE HISTORY
Home to many rockers and rollers who recorded seminal records just around the corner, The Portobello Hotel has played host to many famous faces over the years. From the rockstars of the swinging 60s to Brit Pop legends Blur in the 90s, the bright and vibrant atmosphere of our hotel drew many influential musicians to this corner of West London.

Legend has it that Johnny Depp and Kate Moss once bathed in Champagne in the decadent Room 16. Other musicians and celebrities to walk through the doors include Alice Cooper and Robbie Williams (who tried to buy our famed circular bed from Room 16). Although our books aren’t filled with VIPs as often as they once were, we still have celebrity guests come to stay.

We pride ourselves in our laid-back approach to luxury, so we ask that any guests who happen to see a famous face relaxing in the Sitting Room with a breakfast or a drink to please allow them to simply enjoy their stay.

THE DESIGN
The Portobello Hotel embodies the Bohemian spirit of the Portobello Road Market and the eclectic soul of Notting Hill and London of the swinging 60s. We are one of the most famous hotels in the capital – partly because we were the first boutique hotel in London, but also because our hotel has been home to rockers and rollers who recorded some of the most iconic albums in music history in the recording studios around the corner. Below our owners, Peter & Jessica Frankopan, share their thoughts on the design of the Portobello Hotel.

MUSIC, FASHION & MOVIE
We knew the owners for years before we took it on. We’d told them for ages how Portobello was not just our favourite hotel in London, but the perfect sibling to our other hotels. The Portobello Hotel oozes with music, fashion, and film history.

We love that guests who stayed decades ago are still coming – and that those who come for the first time now make it their home away from home. And we love that you can see two A list stars sitting on nearby tables at breakfast and no one bats an eyelid. We love creating an atmosphere where everyone can relax.

BLENDING THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT
We have 21 rooms in the heart of Notting Hill, five minutes from Portobello Market, and a stone’s throw from Paul Smith, Agent Provocateur, and the boutiques of Westbourne Grove. We are firm believers in respecting the past and blending it with the present day.

So over the last five years, we’ve been slowly working our way through the hotel, upgrading the rooms and making the bathrooms bigger and better. But not for one minute did we want to make ‘our mark’ on the Portobello: our role is to tweak and make better without anyone noticing. That’s the secret of doing things the right way.

ONE OF A KIND PIECES
It has been such fun continuing this legacy of such a famous place. We have scoured local markets and antique shops for one-of-a-kind pieces and little nic nacs and details that bring the hotel’s identity to life, while being faithful to its past.

We know it’s important to our guests to be able to stroll out the front door and walk to places that they are going to like. We are in a perfect location for that – 30 minutes from the City, 20 mins from the shops in Knightsbridge and 5 mins from Portobello market.

The Portobello remains true to what it is because of the attention to detail, sensitive restoration, and the uniqueness of the finish. We’re not surprised it is so popular with those in the know, and while we are thrilled it often gets used for fashion shoots, high profile interviews, and famous guests, we also know that the key to our success is to be discrete, professional and above all, true to the Portobello spirit. Each of our 21 bedrooms is individually designed and reflects the eclectic spirit, eccentric charm, and luxury of Notting Hill. Here at Portobello we believe in the power of switching off and have removed many of the tv’s from our bedrooms, allowing you some true downtime. Convenient and comfortable, all bedrooms include complimentary WiFi, Belu water, and full size Green & Spring bath and body products.

OUTSTANDING ROOMS
Our most spectacular spaces – each Outstanding room tells its own story, embodying the Bohemian spirit of the Portobello Road Market. Located on the lower, ground and first floors, offering a beautiful view of the garden or street and come with separate showers and gorgeous bathtubs.

They all benefit from a generous living area and signature beds. One of them features a canopy bed, the second a royal four poster bed, the third complete with a unique circular bed, and the fourth has a beautiful private patio with a hidden seating area – all with plenty of space to unwind and relax in complete luxury.

GREAT ROOMS
Full of charm and boho design, with plenty of character and space to enjoy – these stunning bedrooms have fabulous views of the streets and gardens of Notting Hill.

Two of these rooms are located on the first floor with high ceilings and gorgeous French doors framing your bedroom, and the third stunning room is on the third floor with a bathtub and overhead shower. Their signature style features furnishings and fabrics sourced from the Portobello Road market, beautifully blending the past and the present.

BETTER ROOMS
The perfect rooftop-gazing nest, with most located on the top floor in the eaves of Portobello – combining eclectic style with a touch of intimacy, creating a vibrant and luxurious stay.

Our better rooms all have fantastic views, overlooking the gardens or streets of Notting Hill. All nestled under a pitched roof with showers, and two hosting Victorian bathtubs – perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the city.

THE BREAKFAST
Breakfast is served in our Sitting Room and includes a selection of fresh fruit juice, tea, coffee, cereal, pastries, yoghurt, meats, cheeses, toast, fresh fruit or a cooked breakfast. This can be enjoyed downstairs or in the privacy of your own room.

HONESTY BAR
The Sitting Room becomes a place to relax with a drink and enjoy the views of the private gardens. With a selection of spirits and liquors from local brewers available in our Honesty Bar, crystal cut glasses, and antique market finds, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

ROOMS SERVICE
Each of our bedrooms are filled with a tasty selection of mini bar treats for you to snack on during your stay. We also have a delicious light bites menu for you to enjoy in the comfort of your bedroom, all washed down of course with a fine selection of drinks and midnight tipples.

THE SPA
We may not have our own spa here at Portobello, but our neighbours sure are mighty fine! Just a short 5 minute walk from Portobello is our friends at Cloud Twelve Wellness Spa, and we have partnered with Notting Hill’s finest, offering our guests an exclusive ‘Spa & Stay’ package, ensuring your stay with us is both relaxing and indulgent; allowing you to float your way through the wonders of the Portobello neighbourhood.
