Alissa & Josh Ruxin, Owners
Alissa Ruxin moved to Rwanda 15 years ago on her honeymoon and never left. Raised in San Francisco a natural “foodie”, and educated in public health with a focus on wellness, Alissa landed in Kigali ready to work with the community on improving health for all.
While volunteering with orphans, Alissa saw a great need for vocational training and job creation, so she shifted gears, and built Heaven-Rwanda’s leading restaurant and hospitality training facility.
Since opening in 2008, Heaven has trained over 1,500 Rwandans in customer service, culinary and hospitality management skills. Over the years, she expanded the business to include the top-ranked 28-room Heaven Boutique Hotel.
In 2014, she was the feature of A Thousand Hills to Heaven: Love, Hope and a Restaurant in Rwanda – a book penned by her husband and co-owner, Josh.
Keen to develop a new luxury property for discerning travelers to Kigali, Alissa began construction of The Retreat – Kigali’s most luxurious, eco-friendly and intimate high-end property. Alissa worked with a team of Italian architects and Rwandan builders and technicians to bring The Retreat to life.
Since opening The Retreat in 2018 and her second restaurant, Fusion, Alissa has continued to expand its footprint and offerings.
Today, The Retreat has a total of 20 rooms, with 8 new luxury pool villas, and her sister company, Heaven Tours, offers curated tours and cultural experiences, featuring off-the-beaten-path destinations throughout Rwanda.
Josh’s interest in great food and service have long been a passion, and he spends summers cooking massive multi-course dinners for his extended family and friends. During Heaven’s first years he was at various times a bartender, rear waiter, busboy, front waiter, maitre de, and executive chef.

Our Luxury Pool Villas are our most spacious and luxurious room type, with private salt water solar heated plunge pools, private front and back gardens, a fully furnished living room area, double sinks with teak vanities, bath tubs, indoor rain showers and outdoor showers with comfortable seating on the private decks.
We have 8 Luxury Pool Villas. Two villas may be adjoining through a garden gate. All Luxury Pool Villas may be set up as King or Twin bed setup.
Superior King Suite
Our Master King Suites are spacious with a seating area and feature front and rear private patios, double sinks with teak vanities, indoor rain showers and outdoor showers with comfortable seating on the back terrace.
We have 3 of this room type. One Master King Suite has a bathtub in addition to the indoor rain shower. All three of our Superior Suites may be set up as Twin Bed Setup.
Deluxe King Room
Our Deluxe King rooms feature private patios, single sinks with teak vanities, peaked ceilings and indoor rain showers. No outdoor shower. We have 3 Deluxe King rooms. 2 Deluxe Rooms are adjoining for families or friends. Only King bed setup is possible, not Twin. Wheelchair accessible.

In 2018, the founders of Kigali’s top restaurant, Heaven, opened a fine dining restaurant which merges culinary traditions from around the world with Rwandan ingredients.
Fusion – the restaurant at The Retreat – takes culinary traditions from Italy, Mauritius, Morocco and elsewhere and blends them into a single harmonious offer.

Heaven Restaurant
Heaven Restaurant was custom built in 2008 to be the first hospitality training restaurant in Kigali. On an open-air terrace with expansive views of Kigali, Heaven is known for its innovative modern African cuisine and excellent service experience.
Heaven has trained over 1,500 Rwandans in hospitality, customer service and culinary skills since its opening. Heaven is more than a restaurant, it is a cultural venue featuring an onsite art gallery, traditional banana wine making experience, children’s playground, and Made in Rwanda retail boutique.
Heaven is constantly evolving its culinary approaches with one central theme: modern African cuisine with local Rwandan ingredients. We work closely with local farmers and cultivate several organic gardens.
We offer on-site mixology classes and feature a traditional banana wine making experience for those excited to dive into traditional Rwandan food and drink.
