HISTORY
The Yeatman is located in the historic heart of Vila Nova de Gaia next to the ancient ‘lodges’ where Port houses have aged their wines for over three centuries. Many of the oldest Port firms were founded by British merchant families and are owned by their successors to this day.

The Yeatmans, who entered the Port trade in 1838, were among the most distinguished and enterprising of the Port families. Their descendants maintain this tradition as owners of three of the most famous Port companies.

In 2006 the opportunity arose for another high profile project, a landmark luxury hotel in a stunning location overlooking the historic centre of Oporto.

Named The Yeatman, in celebration of the family’s historic link with the city, it draws on its owners’ expertise in both fine wine production and luxury hotel management to become one of the world’s leading wine hotels. Opened since August 2010, it became Porto’s address of choice, the hotel which defines the city.

PORT WINE
Port is one of the world’s great classic wines. The grapes are grown in the mountainous upper Douro Valley two hours drive inland from Oporto.

This spectacular area, where the vineyards are planted on narrow walled terraces clinging to the steep mountainsides, was the first wine region to be legally demarcated in 1756. Its historic vineyards are a World Heritage site.

After the wine is made, it is brought down to the ‘lodges’ of the Port houses in Oporto to be aged and blended. Located a few steps from these ancient cellars, The Yeatman is the ideal starting point for a visit to the most famous Port houses.

Moreover its link with the Port trade will allow it to offer an unparalleled Port selection including many rarities. For the wine lover, a trip to the spectacular Douro Valley is not to be missed.

BEACHES IN PORTO
To the north and south of the Douro River, Porto is blessed with a wealth of long, clean, sandy beaches.

Vila Nova de Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto, is known for its diverse natural landscape, in particular close to the river and seafront.

If you begin to explore, one can find many picturesque green areas, ranging from woods, meadows and fields, to beautiful gardens with impressive, stately manor houses. Many are protected areas with some belonging to nature reserves.

Vila Nova de Gaia is also known for its extensive coastline, with large sandy beaches, some with famous coastal sand dunes. The beach landscape is particularly unspoiled and boasts 15kms of coastline with the largest number of Blue Flag beaches in Portugal.

There has also been considerable investment in creating a wooden walkway that runs the full stretch of Gaia’s coastline, providing a sea view along the entire route.

Madalena, Lavadores, Salgueiros and Miramar are all examples of excellent beaches in Gaia, ideal for providing the family with some stress-free fun. The beaches often have esplanades and protected green spaces and are the ideal spot for some beach exercise, with a late afternoon run, long walk or bicycle ride.

Gaia has built a new Marina where you will find a variety of luxury boats. The path from the marina to the beaches provides a good walk, passing by the nature reserve of the Douro estuary, a protected area where you can do some bird watching or contemplate the magnificent, natural scenery.

Visit the adjacent picturesque fishing village of Afurada with its narrow cross streets and traditional cafés and fish restaurants. In Vila Nova de Gaia, we recommend the following beaches:

Lavadores Beach
The beach at Lavadores, in Vila Nova de Gaia is one of the closest beaches to The Yeatman hotel and is characterised by approximately 1km of sandy beach, wooden esplanades and surrounding green areas.

Characterised by its large sandy area and a considerable area of natural vegetation, the Salgueiros beach is one of the prettiest beaches in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The beach also offers good access for walks and bicycle rides and is surrounded by various restaurants, cafés and a few shops. At one end, there is a small outcrop of rocks, which create a natural sea break and a calmer sea, perfect for swimming.

There are several very pleasant surrounding esplanades that are very inviting for relaxing and enjoying the sunset. In addition, Foz offers a vibrant nightlife and some of the best bars, restaurants and nightclubs in town.

Matosinhos
Matosinhos beaches are for a younger, sportier crowd, set within the context of a typical fishing area of Porto, but also an upcoming residential area.
The beaches are lined with cafés and sun terraces and you will find several beach sports to hand from volleyball to surfing, not to forget fishing.

There’s also an area with beach huts and it’s common on these beaches to use parasols; in fact, the Matosinhos beaches can get quite busy in the summer. They offer several pastimes such as surf school and bars and cafés.

The beaches begin at Edifício Transparente, in front of Parque da Cidade (Porto’s natural and very large city park). Edifício Transparente gets its name from its structure: a large glass building in front of the sea offering a mix of more trendy cafés and restaurants, with some culture and sport.

Discover the Matosinhos beaches, explore the area and tie it in with a walk or jog in the park. In Matosinhos, we recommend the following beaches:

Matosinhos Beach
The Matosinhos beach is characterised by fine white sand and clean water and is a stone’s throw from the hundreds of seafood restaurants for which Matosinhos is renowned.

During the summer it is very popular with very easy access and lifeguard protection. Surf board lessons and hire are available here as well as bicycle rental.

Senhora da Boa Nova Beach
The chapel of Boa Nova gave its name to this small beach where the famous “Tea House” and Boa Nova Restuarant were built by the renowned Portuguese architect architect Siza Vieira.

Leça da Palmeira
Leça da Palmeira offers sandy beaches and good infrastructure. The sea is known to be quite choppy in Leça, although perfect if you wish to try your skills at bodyboard and surfing.

The “piscinas das marés” or “Tidal” swimming pools are another of Leça’s attractions and are right next to the beach promenade. The pools are filled with salt water and were designed by the famous Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.

They fit harmoniously into the surrounding, rocky landscape where you will be mesmerized by the breaking waves.

Leça da Palmeira provides a good stretch of cafés, terraces, esplanades and shops where you can find light meals and drinks during the day; and karaoke and live music at night. Perfect for enjoying a cocktail or having dinner on a warm summer’s night. In Leça da Palmeira, we recommend using the following beach:

Leça da Palmeira Beach
The beach at Leça da Palmeira, offers a very long sandy stretch and good amenities. Characterised by rough sea, it is ideal for lovers of surfing and body boarding.

Vila do Conde
Vila do Conde beaches are extremely sought after in the summer with wide stretches of sand and a demarcated fishing area.

The beach offers excellent infrastructure and provides long walks along the parallel promenade, either on foot or bicycle. The sand is notoriously grainy and the beaches are attractive and popular. Vila do Conde, Mindelo and Póvoa de Varzim are all traditional bathing zones and can get quite busy in the summer months.

They all have a wide offering of restaurants and cafés with traditional Portuguese cuisine, sandwiches or salads, or fresh fish (often from the local catch since Vila do Conde and Póvoa have long been well known fishing towns in Portugal).

There are well known Handicraft and Gourmet fairs held in Vila do Conde during the summer months, usually in July and August and there’s an excellent camping ground in neighbouring Árvore. In Vila do Conde, we recommend the following beaches:

Vila do Conde Beach
The beach at Vila do Conde is very sought after in the summer, having a large sandy beach ideal for sunbathing and a special fishing zone.

The beach has excellent amenities and offers pleasant walkways (both pedestrian and bicycle) alongside the beach. Towards the mouth of the River Ave, there is the São João Fort, which dates back to the 17th Century.

Mindelo Beach
The beach at Mindelo is excellently situated and is also much sought after in the summer months. It offers an excellent sandy beach.

NORTH OF PORTUGAL
Oporto is the hub of an extensive motorway network allowing rapid and easy access to some of Portugal’s most beautiful regions, that offer a wealth of culture and history.

These include the Minho with its verdant landscape, opulent palaces, manor houses, the spectacular terraced vineyards of Douro Valley and the historic cities of the Beiras region. Northwestern Spain, famed for its spectacular ‘rias’ and abundant seafood, is also within easy reach.

Just a short distance from metro and mainline rail stations and with easy motorway access, The Yeatman is ideally located to explore, not only the city of Oporto itself, but the beautiful surrounding coastal and inland areas which constitute one of the most beautiful but little known parts of Europe.

Charming historic cities, such as Braga and Viana do Castelo to the north in the Minho or the ancient university city of Coimbra to the south, are within range of a leisurely day trip.

For the wine lover, visits can be arranged to leading vineyards and estates in the Douro Valley, Minho, Dão and Bairrada wine regions, all easily accessible by road.

GOLF IN PORTO
During your next stay at The Yeatman hotel make sure you don’t miss the opportunity of playing golf by taking advantage of the outstanding golf courses the Porto region has to offer.

Designed mostly by renowned international architects, golf courses in and around Porto have excellent conditions. Whether on the seaside or in the countryside, the courses blend perfectly with the diverse landscape of the region.

The introduction of golf in Portugal is closely linked with the English community in Porto which founded the first golf club in Espinho during the late 19th Century. Currently, the Porto and the North of Portugal has numerous well known golf courses, presenting different levels of difficulty.

The par 35 course is a traditional links with nine holes, allowing for short games or full rounds.
