WATER SPORTS IN SRI LANKA
The expansive stretch of beach and warm blue waters of Pasikuda present hundreds of metres of calm shallows that are perfect for water sports in Sri Lanka. Glide across the water kayaking or try out windsurfing (outsourced).

The vibrant coral reef in this area make it the perfect spot for some snorkelling while the deeper waters are filled with mysterious underwater treasures to explore, including shipwrecks.

Uga Bay can organise an unforgettable exploratory expedition to the nearby World War II shipwreck of the HMS Hermes. It presents one of the most exciting scuba diving locations in the region.

The Hermes was the very first purpose-built aircraft carrier in the world and was sunk by Japanese aircraft just off the coast of Batticaloa. This dive however, is reserved for experienced divers, as the vessel lies at a depth of 44 m (145 ft).

SAILING

PASSIKUDAH BAY
Sri Lanka’s famous Pasikuda beach is perched along the eastern coastal line of Batticaloa and stretches for 2 km of beautiful golden sand and sapphire sea. The calm and shallow waters of this gorgeous bay allow you to wade in for up to half a kilometre with no depth or current to fear.

It is also home to an incredible collection of marine life, sustained by the delicate coral reef which, together with the crystal clear waters, makes for the perfect conditions for snorkelling.

The peak season on the Pasikuda is between May and September. The calm waters and warm conditions during this time make the eastern coast of Sri Lanka a great place to enjoy a variety of exciting water sports.

Meanwhile, Kayankerni, with its underwater shipwrecks and plethora of vibrant marine species, is a must-visit site for divers of all skill levels.

BATTICALOA LAGOON
The Batticaloa Lagoon stretches for 56 km between two of Sri Lanka’s main districts – Batticaloa and Ampara. Its spectacular landscape and seascape, along with the exotic species of flora and fauna found along its curves, makes it one of the island’s most scenic spots.

This aquatic habitat is home to a dazzling array of migratory, resident, and endemic species of bird as well as an impressive list of other wildlife. It is a hotspot for academics and researchers alike, who are drawn to it for its thriving biodiversity.

Fishing boats also often line up along the coast against the stunning sunsets that sweep across the horizon, making for unbelievable photo opportunities.

This lagoon is only one of three in the Batticaloa District. Along with the other two – Valaichchenai and Vakari – it contributes to a very diverse and critical estuarine ecosystem that has become the lifeblood of the area.

The locals here grow crops such as rice and coconut as well as engage in shrimp farming, which has developed into a booming industry in these parts. This part of Sri Lanka is also unlike the country’s other coastal regions – being more laidback and quieter. It is the perfect spot to disconnect, get back to nature, and recharge.

BATTICLOA TOUR
A picturesque coastal district simply brimming with culture and history, the places to visit in Batticaloa are plentiful.

It is a melting pot of demographic diversity and is packed with historical landmarks such as the Batticaloa Gate, Gandhi Park, and the Kallady Bridge, as well as architectural marvels such as the Batticaloa Lighthouse, the Mamangam Hindu Temple, and the Old Dutch Fort.

Furthermore, the Sinna Uppodai Lagoon also runs through these parts, making it a haven for an array of colourful plant and wildlife.

POLONNARUWA TOUR
Polonnaruwa was once the ancient capital of the island’s monarchy and has since been revered and celebrated by locals as well as visitors. Formerly the centre of King Vijayabahu’s domain, it is the second most ancient kingdom in Sri Lanka, still holding many vestiges of its fascinating past.

It is now officially designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO while travellers and locals alike visit its ruins to connect with the country’s deep historical and cultural chords. Take a Polonnaruwa tour yourself, and discover these ancient kingdoms come alive.

MINNERIIYA
The Minneriya National Park is renowned for its rare indigenous species of flora and fauna; and for decades it has been an essential stop on a nature lover’s tour of Sri Lankan wildlife.

This park is home to an astounding variety of plant, bird, mammal, amphibian, reptile, fish, and insect species, but is most celebrated for its herds of elephants.

It plays host to what is now known as ‘The Gathering’ – a phenomenon which sees hundreds of elephants congregate upon the grass fields bordering the park’s reservoir during the Dry Season.

SIGIRIYA
