Staying at the Uman Lodge is not just a place to rest your head, but an experience: with an incredible setting, outdoor pool, terrace to view the night sky, tranquility, great service and access to activities, you need 3-4 nights to really feel the whole experience.
The view – whether in the morning mist, during the clear blue afternoon sky or at night, from the minute you feast your eyes on the intoxicating view you are drawn into the beauty that lies before you.
It is a working farm with trails set out amongst the fruit orchards, through the llama fields, taking in the historic old farm buildings. On arrival you are given a little map of the grounds to show you the trails, the five viewing platforms and the beach access – a great way to spend an afternoon without actually leaving the hotel.
Multi-activity excursions
The valley lends itself to outdoor activities and the lodge makes a really great base. There is horse riding around the Espolon Lake, rafting on the mighty Futaleufu River, hiking in the National Reserve or fly fishing on the numerous rivers in the area.
The hotel itself doesn’t have its own in-house guides but works with a selection of tried and tested local outfitters in the area.
On-site hiking
The hotel have set up a series of hiking trails throughout its 489 hectares. Some go to one of its four viewing platforms, others to parts of the working farm, and a longer trail of three hours goes to a view point looking down on the ragging ‘Devils Canyon’ rapid.
There is also a beach at the bottom of the cliff under the hotel, right on the shores of the river – a perfect spot to while away a sunny afternoon.
Pool and spa facilities
The hotel certainly offers a pool with a view! It is an outdoor pool right on the edge of the cliff so as you look up from your stroke you feel like you are totally surrounded by mountains.
There is also an outdoor jacuzzi, indoor pool and spa facilities. For anyone looking for a bit of pampering after a few bumpy days on the road, some intense rafting or some strenuous hiking, this is without doubt the best option in the whole area.
Location
The turn off for the hotel is just 3km before the town of Futaleufu which takes you up a farm track (4×4 advised) to the cliff-top location of the hotel. It is really well located for all the outdoor activities that you might enjoy whilst in the area. In an easterly direction,
Futaleufu is located about a one hour’s drive from Esquel in Argentina, which has regular flights from Buenos Aires. In a westerly direction, the Futaleufu is located about one hour from the Carretera Austral with the turn off just south of the Chaiten and the Pumalin park.
Cuisine
With its restaurant open to the public, the Uman has a great reputation in the area for its high quality, interesting and locally sourced food. The view from the restaurant out onto the valley is fantastic and the wine menu ample for such a remote location.
Guests take priority over ‘outsiders’ and frequently during the summer the outdoor, rustic Quincho (BBQ area), will be serving a traditional lamb bbq washed down with frosty pisco sours or a Chilean carmenere.
History
Just a few years old, the Uman Lodge is the realisation of a dream of a french couple, who after falling in love with this area of Chile, wanted to create their dream hotel.
The hotel sits in 489 hectares of farmland which is carefully maintained and farmed sustainably to provide fresh veggies, fruit and lamb for the hotel.
