History
Situated on a historic 42-acre estate that looks over Grandfather Mountain and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Westglow is serenely nestled in the shadow of Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Constructed in 1917, the estate was originally the summer home of famed artist and writer Elliott Daingerfield. The focal point of the estate is the historic Manor House, built in the Greek Revival style of architecture and featuring many original Daingerfield furnishings and works of art.
Westglow remained in the Daingerfield family until 1978 when Glynda Valentine purchased the estate as a private residence. As a pioneer in fitness and well-being, Glynda first realized the potential of converting Westglow into a retreat for wellness and relaxation, and Westglow Spa was born.
Longtime members Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer continued that legacy with their acquisition of the resort in 2006, initiating a massive restoration and renovation to create the world-class resort that became Westglow Resort & Spa.
The spa consistently ranked in the top ten destination spas in the world, achieving the number one ranking in 2017. In 2010, Westglow was inducted into the prestigious Relais & Chateaux association of inns and resorts, one of only 100 in the United States at the time.
In 2020, a new chapter of Westglow was written, converting the resort into a destination wedding venue, transitioning all lodging to private home rentals, and maintaining the Life Enrichment Center as a day and member spa.
Westglow Mansion
The Westglow Mansion, original home of famed American artist Elliott Daingerfield, has been a grand private residence for most of its 100-year life.
In recent years it was transformed into a Relais & Chateaux luxury resort hosting Presidents, national public leaders, celebrities, and guests seeking the very best accommodations, the finest cuisine in the High Country, and the number one rated spa in the world.

Many have dreamed of having the entire Mansion to themselves, now is the time! Your fairy-tale mansion awaits. With 6 guest bedrooms, 6 full baths (five with original claw foot tub/showers, one with a walk-in shower) and 3 half baths, the Mansion can easily accommodate up to 14 people.
The main level consists of a formal living room, formal dining room, elegant sun porch, cozy Library and bar, and grand west portico – perfect spaces to gather after spending the day at the adjacent Westglow Spa Life Enrichment Center, just steps away.
With easy access to all the High Country has to offer, from the extensive hiking trails, to shopping in downtown Blowing Rock, to the variety of nearby restaurants, you are in the heart of Blowing Rock’s best.
Included in your lodging is a complimentary Continental Breakfast prepared by Westglow Spa’s chef, served buffet-style every morning during your stay.
Please note there are no cooking facilities within the Manor House and with the exception of breakfast, all meals must be taken off property. However, our private chef is available to prepare evening meals upon request, please contact us for pricing.
Daingerfield House
Located adjacent to Westglow’s Life Enrichment Center, the Daingerfield House is the perfect combination of privacy and convenience.
Capable of housing up to ten guests comfortably, the Daingerfield House was built by the daughter of Elliott Daingerfield, famed artist and owner of Westglow, in the 1950’s and is a short walk from the world famous Westglow Spa and Life Enrichment Center.
Extensive renovations and additions were completed in late 2006 transforming the small cottage into a spacious four-bedroom home with commanding views of the Johns River Gorge below. On a clear day you can even see downtown Charlotte!
The main level has a large vaulted great room with a two-story wood burning stone fireplace, an adjacent cook’s kitchen with commercial grade appliances, dining room, and a billiards room.
Three bedrooms are found on the main level, one bedroom contains a queen bed and ensuite bathroom, two bedrooms (one with bunk beds the other with a king bed) share a bath.
The second floor contains the master suite with a king-sized bed and ensuite master bath (jacuzzi tub, private toilet, walk-in shower, separate vanities).
Outside are stone terraces on both the front and rear of the home, perfect spots for an afternoon cocktail or enjoying forever views of the valley below. A two-car garage and laundry room are available for guest use.
The Lodge at Westglow
Located on a private drive in Westglow Village, The Lodge provides mountain accommodations in three separate guest suites. Each suite has its own private entrance and large views of the natural forest of Westglow facing Grandfather Mountain.
The Lodge was extensively renovated in 2015 and contains the best in modern accommodations. Each suite features wifi connectivity and large LCD televisions.
Located adjacent to Westglow Spa, The Lodge is a short drive or walk across to one of the top-rated destination spas in the country and with access that all Blowing Rock and the High Country offers, you’ll find yourself immersed in the mountain life!
Tree Top Suite
Originally part of the famed Westglow Resort & Spa property, the Tree Top Suite is located in the private development of Westglow Village adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest, just across the street from Westglow Spa and the Life Enrichment Center.
This two-level residence contains a large living and dining area, fully equipped kitchen, queen bedroom, and bath on the main level. On the second level is a private king master suite with ensuite bath (vanity, toilet, and tub/shower) and walk-in closet.
There are ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with a large deck on the main level with views of Grandfather Mountain, and a more intimate deck off the second floor master suite for enjoy your morning coffee.
The Tree Top Suite was extensively renovated in 2017 and is furnished throughout with Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams furniture and accessories.
Mountain Laurel
This suite is located on the lower level of the Lodge at Westglow across from the entrance to Westglow Spa. Completely renovated in 2015, Mountain Laurel consists of a living room with gas log fireplace and large windows framing a secluded forest view with the outline of Grandfather Mountain in the distance.
Adjacent to the living room is a bedroom with a queen bed, small refrigerator and coffee machine. The bathroom contains a walk-in shower and vanity with granite countertop. Outside you’ll find a private patio and wood deck perfect for enjoying the afternoon sunset.

The Westglow Estate Package
Westglow Resort & Spa now offers the rare opportunity to reserve our entire mountain estate property for up to 28 discerning guests for a one-time buyout amount per evening. Truly, your very own fairy-tale resort for just you, your family or friends.
With 14 bedrooms in total, spread among three distinctive and architecturally significant homes on the resort grounds, you will have the ultimate privacy and luxury. There will be no other lodging guests at the resort, the property is yours to enjoy as you wish.
A continental breakfast is included during your stay and will be served in the Mansion for you and your guests. For an additional fee, you may choose to have our private chef prepare your evening meals. With the opportunity to create your very own personalized menu, your group literally can have anything they want!
Spend the day at our award-winning Spa, ranked 5th in the U.S. by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. Facility use of our Life Enrichment Center is included with your stay, offering unlimited access to our indoor heated pool, jetted tubs, steam and sauna rooms, exercise and aerobics areas, men’s and women’s lounges, and “Heaven’s lobby”, our Relaxation Lounge.
