9 HOUSES – 1 HOTEL – 700 YEARS OF HISTORY
Just imagine who might have lived in your room hundreds of years ago… Over the years, these nine medieval townhouses have been home to gentry, merchants, artisans and heads of the local guilds, all of whom left their mark by building, living in, decorating and modifying their residences.
But to preserve these nine disparate historic houses while transforming them into a luxury modern hotel was a challenge – to which the well-known Swiss architect Tilla Theus had the answer.
She has threaded the houses through with interconnecting passageways, creating gradual transitions where one house merges into the next. Chrome, steel and glass have been introduced to complement the old stone walls and wooden beams.
Theus also selected a particular type of wood and a specific kind of stone for use in each house. This ambitious conversion took a decade and was completed in 1995. More than 1,000 conservation builders and designers were involved in helping to fuse these nine entities into a single hotel.
Restoration in order to preserve; innovation where construction required. This proved the only way to maintain the physical substance and core layout of the buildings, and so to conserve their 700 year-old spirit.
And what does the name ‘Widder’, or ‘ram’, have to do with all this? Quite simply, the name of the hotel refers to the ‘Zum Widder’ guild of butchers, based in nearby Widdergasse since 1401. Stay unique.
Rooms & Suites
In the Widder Hotel, there’s a new world to discover behind every door. Each suite has a different layout and all rooms are individually decorated.
One suite may feature venerable oak beams, another an antique tiled stove, grisaille murals, delicate frescos or elegant stucco. But all our luxury accommodation shared among all these are high quality materials and a host of historical references.
On the medieval framework we have layered contemporary design, cutting-edge technology and unparalleled comfort: each bed is adjustable and pleasant light is provided by directional LED reading lamps.
Movement-sensitive night-lights guide guests from bed to bathroom. Each room is also equipped with a Nespresso machine, minibar, multimedia TV, wifi and telephone.
PENTHOUSE SUITE WITH ROOFTOP TERRACE
Let’s start from the top: sweeping views over Zurich, lake and Alps from your 80m2 roof top! Your living room with a wood burning fire place and dining table and a fully stocked bar is ideal to entertain.
A guest toilet, bedroom with king bed and full bathroom (walk-in shower, Jacuzzi-bath, make-up table) provide you the extra space you need. Our two-way luxury transfer in one of our Mercedes S-Classes is included in this category.
HISTORIC SUITE
These extra spacious suites 48-65m2, separate bed- and living room, have a special character: the original late Baroque wood paneling and furniture combined with contemporary elements are fine example of the Widder “stay unique” philosophy. Each room has either a large walk-in shower or a bathtub.
DESIGN QUEEN ROOM
The entry level double or double single-use room, comfortable bed (160cm) on 27-37 m2, each room has either a large walk-in shower or bathtub, you may find Eames, Corbusier or a medieval fresco, views of historic Zurich. A desk with all the necessary connections also makes working in this room seem easy.

The Widder Bar is an institution of the Zurich bar scene. Open daily from 12 p.m. until late in the evening, our Widder Bar offers space and time for a quick lunch, the extended Tea Time in the afternoon and then becomes a nightlife hotspot.
It is clear that the Widder Bar is Zurich’s cult bar and thus the avant-garde meeting place.
BOUCHERIE AUGUST
Boucherie, brasserie, bistro – AuGust embodies them all. The menu here showcases the finest meat and sausages. In an atmosphere of rustic chic, chef Tino Staub prepares regional classics and makes even long-neglected parts of the animal thoroughly respectable.
Where else nowadays in Zurich could you try boiled beef salad, tripe and brawn? This is a place where a taste for adventure is well rewarded. For everyone else, there are classics such as Leberkaese, home-made pâtés, terrines and pies.
Delicacies from other countries, such as prosciutto culatello con cotenna from Italy’s Parma region, and on-trend novelties such as beef jerky with Swiss Alpine herbs complete the menu.

From 17:30 the Widder Garage in Augustinerhof 1 (directly behind Münzplatz / Bahnhofstrasse) opens its doors and holds sunny outdoor seating in the courtyard for the beautiful summer evenings.

Badi Enge: Situated at the lake shore and easy to reach on foot, by tram or by bike is the trendy Badi. Be prepared for drinks, music and cool locals – perfect for relaxing after shopping and getting in the mood for the evening.
Badi Letten: In the urban and new part of Zurich, hidden away is the Badi Oberer Letten. A suburban place that shows the city in a completely different light and is definitely an insider tip amongst the locals.
ART
You have a soft spot for art? So do we! In our City & Lake Resort there is a lot to discover. In the Widder you will find collectors’ exhibits such as a Poliakoff, Max Bill or Sophie Teuber Arp. These are all on display in the hotel library and can be admired and examined over a coffee or glass of wine.
SHOPPING
Feel like doing something good for yourself? Get your credit card glowing again? You are in the right place: the fashion city of Zurich has a lot to offer. The main street is the so-called Bahnhofstrasse: if you stroll towards the lake, you will find the luxury boutiques of Dior, Chanel, Chloe & Co.
If you walk in the opposite direction to the main station, you should stop off at the department stores Jelmoli and Globus. Looking for an unconventional shopping experience?
Then you should commute downtown: Viaduktstrasse offers everything the explorer’s heart desires: local brands, food halls and sustainable concepts from clothing to home décor.
ZURICH’S OLD TOWN
In the old town of Zurich, you will not only discover our two hotels, the Widder and the Storchen, but also many other magical places.
For example, the Lindenhof, the city’s former guard tower, narrow alleys that lead to architectural showpieces and small shops that guarantee the best souvenirs in the city with their own manufactories.
HIKING
In LA it’s known as canyoning, here in Zurich we call it “Üetli-Hike”. Zurich’s local mountain can be climbed in a 90-minute hike and offers a unique view over the city of Zurich, the lake and the Alps. At the summit itself, the Uto Kulm is there for your refreshment and offers Swiss specialities for your rumbling belly.
ZOO ZÜRICH
Animal lovers take note: the Zurich Zoo is both a fun park and an institution. Tourists love it, locals love it and you can’t visit it often enough. Polar bears, penguins, giraffes and much more converge here with the Masoala Hall, where giant butterflies can be discovered among tropical plants.
LINDT
The museum of the Lindt chocolate factory, which opened in 2020, is idyllically located in Rüschlikon on the lake.
As soon as you arrive, you can smell the chocolate from the street and that promises only good things: the centre of the museum is probably the highest and largest chocolate fountain in the world…a feast for the eyes of young and old. Our concierge will be happy to organise tickets and transfers.
JOGGING OR WALKING
If you don’t want to give up your training during your holidays, you have chosen a wonderful destination for it: as a resort guest, you are so close to the water in all our hotels that your walk or run should take you along the lake.

BIKES & E-BIKES
At Storchen Zurich and Alex Lake Zurich, E-bikes are available to you as a resort guest (also as a Widder guest), with which you can get around the city and to the lake comfortably, CO2-neutrally and quickly. The wind in your hair, the sun on your skin and exercise in your legs: a wonderful day at the City & Lake Resort.
SLEDGING
While the Üetliberg is there for wonderful hikes in spring, summer and autumn, it offers a somewhat different adventure in winter: sledding. Take the train up to the summit and then whizz down the slope on your sledge. The “après-ski” drink is then served in your hotel.
ICE SKATING
Hockey fans and figure skaters wanted! A workout that promises mulled wine and conviviality in equal measure. There are various ice rinks in Zurich where you can let off steam. Suitable for newlyweds, families or fun among friends. The ice rinks are a happening in the city every year.
BOAT TRIP ON THE LAKE
A classic in Zurich: the boat trip on the lake. The departure point is always on Bürkliplatz, the city’s lake shore. The tours are variable in their duration – from 90 minutes to 4 hours, everything is possible.
You can choose where to get off the boat: if you particularly like a certain place, you can leave the ship at any time and set off on an expedition.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
A happening that stretches across the entire city and offers something for everyone: whether you’re a Christmas lover or simply a mulled wine drinker or food lover, everyone will enjoy themselves here.
The largest Christmas market is on Sächsilüte-Platz, right by the lake, and the bad-weather option is in the entrance hall of the main railway station (with the famous Swarovski Christmas tree).
