THE HISTORY OF WINVIAN FARM
In 1775, Dr. Seth Bird, an eccentric but respected physician known for bringing a coffin along on his house calls, built a home for himself and his family in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut. It was a white clapboard beauty, aproned with meadows and woods, and a comfort and sustenance for the generations.

In 1948, the Smith family bought the historic Bird estate and named it Win-Vian, a combination of the first names of Winthrop Smith and his wife Vivian.

They raised a beloved son, bounteous fruit and vegetables, and livestock on the property (today the luxury Spa stands where the pigpens once did but offers a rather nicer kind of mud treatment).

When Win died, Vivian married Charles McVay, captain of the USS Indianapolis, whose riveting story is detailed in the book “In Harm’s Way.”

With the addition of eighteen individually designed luxury cottages and Hadley Suite, Winvian Farm remains in the Smith family today, lovingly restored by Maggie Smith, her daughter Heather and son Win Smith III into a luxurious, unconventional and absolutely magnificent getaway.

THE COTTAGES

Eighteen unique resort cottages and the Hadley Suite were designed by fifteen different architects, each with a story to tell, each a surprise, an escape, a splendid adventure. Winvian Farm is near New York and Boston as well; easy to get to yet hard to leave.

WOODLANDS
Retreat to the forest in a wonderful cottage of rough-cut pine and peeled tree-trunks, where an interior waterfall cascades merrily over stones. The living room is a soaring space, with a double-sided wood-burning fireplace. The bathroom is a forest fantasy; overturned tree trunks form the sinks and water pours from wall-mounted faucets.

A jetted soaking tub is sunken into the verdigris marble floor looking out to the pond and woods, and the gorgeous walk-in shower is walled with thousands of smooth river stones. The natural stone waterfall sits just behind the king sized bed and the moonlight permeates through the entire cottage.

MUSIC
Music is a symphony of color and clean design; a harmonious escape tucked into the New England woods. A double-sided gas fireplace warms an art-deco couch on one side and the king-sized bed on the other. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with light, draperies flow closed for privacy at the touch of a button.

In the bathroom, a jetted soaking tub and rainfall showerhead play a water music of their own. A giant marimba screens the patio and outdoor chimes, drums and gongs invite you to play. A dog-friendly Connecticut getaway.

LIBRARY
Library is a private treasury of illustrated and literary works in a setting that evokes an Ivy League reading room – but with Winvian Farm’s deep comforts. A skylight floods the sitting area’s antiques, brass reading lamps and wood-burning stone fireplace with natural light.

Ladders climb to a book-lined, wrap-around mezzanine which overlook a sumptuous double-sided leather sleeper sofa. This 21st Century reading room includes a king-sized bed and a flat screen TV that rises from a bookcase. Relax with a book and a glass of something good on the Library’s screened porch.

HELICOPTER
A fully-restored 1968 Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican helicopter is ready to rescue you. This amazing Coast Guard chopper stands at the center of a unique cottage, its rotor blades embedded in the ceiling (flights of fancy only!).

The originals are here: pilot and co-pilot seats, switches, gauges – with modern updates such as a mod sofa and flat screen TV. Take your cocktails in the cockpit, watch a film in the fuselage, relax by a glowing woodstove, and sleep in the cloud-soft king-sized bed outside the helicopter. Stylish, fun, and totally aerodynamic.

GOLF
It’s tee time in this distinctive clubhouse cottage overlooking New England meadows. Lush carpets form fairways and putting greens rolling up to a wood-burning fireplace in the living room where verdant hills arc along the walls.

In the bedroom, a unique headboard silhouettes the Scottish skyline of St. Andrews where the game of golf began. A TV rises from the footboard at the touch of a button. In the bathroom, a jetted soaking tub and separate steam shower are a just reward after a gratifying day on the greens.

The Restaurant at Winvian Farm’s Executive Chef Chris Eddy is leading a culinary revolution with his uniquely Winvian Farm seed-to-table philosophy. The freshest, most natural non-GMO ingredients are harvested daily to create exceptional seasonal menus, for a truly luxurious fine dining experience.

Almost everything served in Winvian Farm’s revered restaurant is grown on our private estate in three greenhouses, and three acres of organic gardens.

Honey from our apiary, a henhouse, root cellar, and luscious fruit trees round out Winvian Farm’s artfully open-ended menus. Even the dining room bouquets come from Winvian Farm’s heady flower and herb beds.

MAGGIE’S TAVERN
You asked for it. Now we’ve got it. Casual dining has arrived at Winvian Farm in the form of Maggie’s Tavern, named for our beloved proprietor. Guests tell us they love our five-diamond restaurant. But sometimes they prefer to eat light, say a charcuterie board and a glass of wine.

Now thanks to the hard work of our food and beverage team, we have transformed our Games room into Maggie’s Tavern, with additional seating in the adjoining Solarium.

Like the Restaurant at Winvian Farm, you can expect only the freshest, most delicious ingredients (many from our gardens), prepared with elan by Chef Chris Eddy and his kitchen team.

Think specialty cocktails (with herbs from the garden) prepared by bartender Christina Kamenos, today-fresh salads, charcuterie accompanied by local and regional cheeses, inventive sandwiches, a burger to die for, delicious soups and pasta. Top it off with house-made sorbet and ice cream and cookies.

Initially, we’ll be serving lunch Wednesday through Sunday, noon until 4 pm. House guests will also enjoy lunch on Monday and Tuesday, noon until 1:30 pm.

Once we’re satisfied we’re exceeding guest expectations, we will begin a casual dinner service. Stay tuned for details. In the meantime, house guests are welcome to enjoy dinner in the tavern, at the bar or in the Solarium, choosing from the nightly restaurant dinner menu.

Litchfield Distillery batches exceptional distilled spirits, handcrafted from the highest quality, regionally harvested grains, and fruit. The Distillery features distinctive spirits for all tastes.

DRIFT BOAT
The Drift Boat often referred to as a ‘river runner’ is an iconic shallow water vessel. Great for doing a little fishing or just going out to explore and enjoy the waves rain or shine. Gourmet boxed lunches included upon request!

PAINTING
This is not your average paint night! Using only artist palette knives, you will have the opportunity to create your own scape using the artist’s technique of layering, removing, scraping, and blending.

Make it a mother-daughter outing, date night, include the pup, or even get the creative juices flowing in your children and use this class as an alternative babysitter while you and your significant other enjoy the Litchfield town center.

FAIRVIEW GOLF COURSE

FARMINGTON RIVER TUBING
Trying to escape the summer heat? Visit Farmington River Tubing and enjoy an exciting, yet relaxing, 2-mile journey down the nearby Farmington River.

The river courses through three thrilling sets of rapids and plenty of splash-worthy flat water. Farmington River Tubing provides a tube and life jacket at a cost of $25 per person. Get ready to jump in!

SPORTSMEN’S OF BANTAM
Experience the area’s natural beauty on the water! Paddle on Connecticut’s largest natural lake, Bantam Lake, in one of Sportsman’s canoes or kayaks.

THE MARINA AT HIGHLAND LAKE

The Marina at Highland Lake offers pontoon and ski boat rentals and cruises. They also rent kayaks, canoes, and SUPs.

CT WATERSPORTS
Looking for some fun on CTs largest natural lake located right in Bantam? How about waterskiing, tubing, wake surfing & wakeboarding?
