If you’re traveling to San Diego and need the perfect hotel, Coronado is one of the most beautiful cities in the area to stay in, and of all the wonderful Coronado Beach Hotels, 1906 Lodge is not to be missed. The meticulously restored 1906 Lodge hotel has been a welcoming presence on San Diego’s Coronado Island for well over a century.

The hotel’s location provides the best of both worlds: a quiet and romantic setting, and it’s just one block to Coronado’s main street shops, restaurants, and galleries, and it’s only two blocks from the world-famous Coronado Beach and Hotel Del Coronado.

THE HISTORY
Built in 1906, the main building of the 1906 Lodge was a joint design by two renowned San Diego architects: Will Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. Over a century later, iconic elements of their individual styles can be seen throughout the property.

For example, the exterior rough stucco, major box dormers, and hipped roofs are typical of Hebbard styles, while the interior’s Mission-style fireplace with spiral-leaded glass windows, along with “inglenook” or box bench seats on either side of the fireplace, are typical Gill designs.

Owned by Florence C. Roper, the 1906 Lodge was originally used as a boarding house for students of the School of Aviation at North Island, which is the current site of today’s Naval Air Station North Island. It was in the 1920s, after being acquired by the Winchester family, that the property was first used as a hotel as the Bay View Lodge.

In 1942, the Bay View Lodge was purchased by James J. Trant and renamed Trant Manor. It was used again as a boarding house, but after many years it slipped into disrepair.

In 2009, the new owners, recognizing the historic significance of the building, completed major restoration and renovation work, resulting in the beautiful 1906 Lodge in Coronado Beach that welcomes guests to Coronado Island.

CORONADO ISLAND
Part of San Diego County, Coronado Island is an oasis, separated from California’s second largest city by San Diego Bay. It’s a short trip from the mainland via the Coronado Bridge or the ferry, but truly a world apart.

Protected by Point Loma to the east and the mainland to the west, the water surrounding Coronado is perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing on some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere, especially the famous Coronado Beach. But it’s not all surfing and sand castles here.

Visitors also enjoy the galleries, live theaters, boutiques, and restaurants of the walkable downtown district, and the colorful, lush gardens that seem to thrive at every turn. Sailing and golf are popular pastimes, and the island offers 15 miles of dedicated bike and running paths that will take you along Coronado Beach.

ACTIVITIES
Coronado Island is filled with things to do — from water-sports such as surfing and sailing to cultural attractions. like art galleries and live theaters, or shopping boutiques and restaurants in Downtown Coronado, all a short walking distance from 1906 Lodge. Venture to Balboa Park and visit the famous Botanical Gardens.

Go back in time and board the historical USS Midway Ship. Or, go on a wild adventure to the San Diego Zoo. Check out our local recommendations for the best to do in Coronado Island and San Diego.
