It is in the heart of an increasingly vibrant Lisbon, influenced by the elegance of Chiado and the irreverence of Bairro Alto, that we find Bairro Alto Hotel.

Rehabilitated and expanded by the architect Souto de Moura with interiors of the Atelier Bastir and TheStudio, it combines style, bohemia and sophistication with the classic charm of a different time.

Bairro Alto Hotel opened its doors for the first time in 2005, in the building where until 1980 was the Grand Hôtel de L’Europe, a landmark in the national hotel business history.

The set of buildings where the Bairro Alto Hotel is located dates back to the XVIII century and it is an area of municipal interest in Lisbon – more precisely between Bairro Alto and Chiado, two of the most emblematic neighborhoods of the city.

Bairro Alto Hotel, a renowned member of “The Leading Hotels of the World”, is a pioneer in Portugal in the concept of 5 star boutique hotels.

A milestone in the history of this hotel, which represents the best of Lisbon in an experience where charm, bohemia and sophistication guide visitors through the history of a breathtaking and enthralling city.

The neighborhood
Bairro Alto Hotel is located in the historic center of Lisbon in a prestigious and emblematic area, made even more special by the several Lisbon sights it offers: it is located between the elegant and cosmopolitan Chiado and the bohemian Bairro Alto.

There isn’t a better place in the capital to feel Lisbon’s true soul and to be surrounded by its authenticity.

Bairro Alto
From the entrance of the hotel we see Praça Luís de Camões, which imposes itself as a separation between this neighborhood and Chiado. Further on we have Bairro Alto with its steep streets, flanked by the viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara.

At every corner there are a variety of restaurants and bars, along with alternative shops, bookstores and art galleries. In the air, we feel the unmistakable aroma of the famous cream pastries (“pastéis de nata”), while listening to street performers and feeling the cool breeze of the Tejo River.

Chiado
The harmonious light of Lisbon shines on the streets as we cross to Chiado. Under the watchful eye of Fernando Pessoa, a tram goes by: the “28”, as it is known, in operation for more than 100 years.

Further down, among other iconic spots, we find the Bertrand bookstore, one of the oldest in the world still in business. We are close to several points of tourist and cultural interest.

We are in the heart of Lisbon
Facades of “azulejos”, dormer windows and typical Lisbon sidewalks make the horizon, providing a stage for the dynamic dance of those who walk the streets: people who wander, work or live in the city.

At a distance, the occasional glimpse of the Tejo river… here, we feel the beat of life in the city – here, we are in the heart of Lisbon.
