One of the best ways to enjoy Japanese summer is to dine on a kawadoko, a summer terrace built directly over water. Kibune river, source of the Kamogawa river, is located deep in the northern valleys of Kyoto.

Why not take a break from the summer heat and enjoy a delicious meal on the kawadoko deck extending above the river, while basking in the vibrant green light filtering through the trees, listening to the soothing melody of the water below and breathing in the fresh, cool river air.

KIBUNE SHIRNE
Kibune shrine is dedicated to Takao kami-no-kami, the god of rain and water, also revered as the guardian god tea ceremony (sado), sake brewing, dyeing and overseas travel.

OKU-NO-MIYA
Oku-no-miya is located on the ancient areas of the Kibune shrine. According to legend, a dragon god lives in a hole underneath the main shrine. The shrine also appears in the Noh theater song ‘Ox-hour visit to the shrine’ or Ushi no koku mairi.

On the way to Oku-no-miya shrine there is the Yui-no-shashiro, a shrine dedicated to matchmaking. It is said that it was visited by the famous Izumi Shikibu to pray for success in her love affairs.

KURAMA TEMPLE
Kurama Temple is the head temple of the Kurama-Kokyo sect. In ancient times it was called Mt. Kurabu (dark area) and was believed to be a home to Tengu, supernatural creatures who taught swordsmanship to the young hero Ushikawa-maru.

After paying your respects, walk through the Oku-no-in and Osugi-mao-den and you will arrive at the little village of Kibune and find Hiroya alongside Kibune Shrine.

HOW TO ACCESS TO RYOKAN HIROYA
Tucked away in the northern mountains of Kyoto, a place that has and will carry on welcoming visitors. Beyond the large torii gate, a blessed natural environment where lush greenery extends beyond your eyes can see.
