Places to swim

Perhaps the most important of the tourist asset of Mykonos, that distinguish it from other islands are the beaches. Here are without doubt the most – and best – to be found . Particularly in the South, the picturesque coves with sandy beaches follow one another.

Those beaches, can be reached by car or motorbike, since the radial roads of the island starting from the Mykonos town stretches nearly to each corner.

Precisely because of that particular road network in the island, many Southern beaches are linked with each other with a boat operating on a regular service, all day all summer, which offers the visitor a very interesting excursion opportunity.

Starting someone from Mykonos town (at the port of which there is a small beach that many holidaymakers and city residents prefer, because of convenience) and directed to the south, will meet with the series follows the popular beaches:

Ftelia Beach – Windsurfing Paradise
Wide sandy beach on Island’s Ftelia Bay, no umbrellas or beach-chairs, windy, few visitors. A true paradise for windsurfers.

Agios Stefanos – Re-styled Beach

Super Paradise Beach – Young and Gay Friendly
Large, and as its name implies, lovely sandy beach, a big favorite during the high season. Beach umbrellas and sun-beds are provided. On Super Paradise’s very gay friendly right hand-side, the famous Coco Club Bar serves cocktails, and provides a cool hangout where you can also enjoy a dip in its pool.

On the far left side of the beach, a large self-service taverna offers Greek cuisine, and a mixed, often young, party crowd drinks and dances to loud music from late afternoon on.

Kalafatis Beach – Sportive
Very long sandy beach with multiple water sport facilities. Perfect for families, sportive visitors and windsurf fans. Large hotel facilities overlook the beach.

Agia Anna (Paranga) Beach – Charming & unique
Agia Anna is small simple and calm beach within walking distance from the famous Paranga lively beach and facing Platis Gialos. It’s charm consists of golden sand and the crystalline water.

Kalo Livadi Beach – Lifestyle & Trendy
The largest, long, and very beautiful sandy beach in Mykonos, offering comfortable sun-beds & umbrellas, with excellent service from adjacent three restaurants, a true must for all beach lovers.

Platis Gialos Beach – Busy and Family Friendly

Ornos Beach – Family Friendly
Long, soft sandy beach in a family, tourist area. Umbrellas, sun-beds, plus many tavernas, bars and hotels. Regular bus service to town and Aghios Ioannis, plus boat service to other beaches including Psarou, Elia, Agrari and Super Paradise.

Psarou Beach – Stylish and Be Seen
Smaller, exclusive area, stylish beach, nestled in a sheltered cove. Sailing boats and celebrity yachts are all part of the view. The best beach for any windy day, it boasts very stylish wooden sunbeds and umbrellas, and excellent service.

Paradise – Young and Wild
Large, long sandy beach, the favorite with younger and teenage crowd. Very touristy as has a large camp site. Not the best for those seeking a relaxed, laid back afternoon. The Tropicana beach bar blasts off with house music at 5pm each day: a real paradise for the young or young at heart.

Nightlife in Mykonos
Believe the postcards! Mykonos is so exquisit; it is no accident that it has become one of the most desired destinations in the world.

The cosmopolitan lifestyle, the sophisticated nightlife and the historic treasures of the nearby Delos, plus stunning natural beauties and picturesque villages, you have the recipe for an unforgettable holiday.

Mykonos is definitely the number one island in the Cyclades, thanks to its treasure of natural beauty, rich history, cosmopolitan character combined with a wild nightlife, as well as plenty of local color.

Your Night in Mykonos
If hitting up the trendiest bars and nightclubs is your thing, then the Greek island of Mykonos is for you. One of the most visited Greek Islands; Mykonos is located in the Aegean Sea as part of the Cyclades. It’s a well-known cosmopolitan destination known for its exciting nightlife scene.

CAVO PARADISO
It is situated in the most atmosperic location of the island. Has a swimming pool at the shape of Mykonos. It is the meeting point of the clubbers from all over the world. Nice music, cool faces and unbeatable drinks. Almost every day guest Djs from all over the world guarantee your entertainment.

Music & Cafe Nights

Within the town of Mykonos there are numerous of trendy music bars or just cafe bars for every taste. Matoyannia is one of the best places to enjoy a drink and watch the colourful crowds passing by, increasing in density and ‘peacockery’ as the night goes on.

In the early evening, at Aroma Bar, the music is light and easy Jazz. A few steps further takes you to another popular bar, The Cosi, where you can sit on the raised walled seating that line the sides of the street, The jolly mile extends further to Aegli and Astra at the 3 wells.

Stay for some time and watch the transformation. In the early evening (around 8p.m.) young people flock here from the nearby beaches, still drenched in sun and sand, their glossy hair pulled back in a casual way that only the young can make beautiful.

Charming Nights

Right on the corner of Little Venice you will see the Veranda bar. It is located in one of the charmingly quaint buildings that gives the area its unique character.

If you are lucky you can get a seat on its old wooden first floor veranda and avoid the constant crush of passers-by that the other bars suffer from. The whole area around Little Venice is a perfect place to sit and and watch the sky changing as the sun sets.

Whilst enjoying a refreshing drink or delicious meal you can enjoy the wonders of nature’s paint box as she turns day into night with colours that alter from ultramarine to turquoise to pink and gold and then to the deep navy blue of the night sky, twinkling with silver stars and the golden lights of the cruise ships out at sea.

Once the sun sets the crowds begin to disperse slightly as the ‘young and the restless’ leave to embellish themselves for the night ahead.

Clubs & Bars

However, as the evening draws on they disappear and re-emerge as super-butterflies in flimsy flowing dresses. Interestingly, at this time of night it is the middle-aged visitor who by 8p.m. is coiffured and spruced up for their evening dinner before quietly withdrawing and giving the town up to the young for the night.

Later on, the night outing will continue in Agyra, 9 Muses, Remezzo, Argo, Ramroo, on the stairs in Manto square, in Mykonos bar, Thalami, Scandinavian and many other clubs and bars who are making the nightlife of Mykonos one of the most wild and beautiful in Europe.

Discover Mykonos
Mykonos in Greek: Μύκονος [ˈmikonos] is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. The island spans an area of 85.5 square kilometres (33.0 sq mi) and rises to an elevation of 341 metres (1,119 feet) at its highest point.

There are 10,134 inhabitants (2011 census) most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, which lies on the west coast. The town is also known as Chora (i.e. the Town in Greek, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town.

The neighboring island Delos belongs to the administration of Mykonos as well.

Tips About Mykonos

A typical day on Mykonos starts usually with a late breakfast at 11am before heading to the beach. The sun is at its hottest from 12 to 2pm, so to avoid getting burned, most people start showing up at the beach after 1pm. Most restaurants open each evening around 8pm.

Those who prefer to dine this early though may find themselves sitting alone since dinnertime on Mykonos is traditionally after 10pm. In fact, it is common to be invited for dinner as late as 11!

There are only 30 taxis that service the entire island, therefore, they cannot be booked in advance. They are usually gathered at the two taxi stands in town where you can stand in line or you can call the taxi dispatch for availability.

Aside from taking taxis, you have the option to hire a private transfer which may cost a few more euros but will ensure your safe arrival. Most people who visit the island opt to rent cars, scooters or quads from one of the many rental companies to get around.

Note that while no cars are allowed within Mykonos town, there is a large free parking lot at the “old port” where you can park for as long as you like and is only a short stroll into town.

If you decide to rent a scooter, you should know that only bikes up to 50ccs are rented on the island and that the ATVs or Quads are usually slow and quite dangerous on the hills.

Please mention that the roads on the island are difficult and while drunk driving is not tolerated on the island, sadly, it can become a problem in the crowded months so please be careful on the roads and ALWAYS wear your helmets when driving.

Be sure to check which way the wind is blowing each day before choosing which beach to visit. Mykonos is known as the “Island of the Winds” so planning to avoid the North shores when there is a particularly strong North wind will make all the difference. Trust us… we have all learned that tip the hard way.

Ask the locals about their favourite places to unwind! Chances are they will recommend a deserted beach that is tucked away where you can quietly relax with a few friends in the middle of August when the crowds are at their worst. The cobblestone streets of town are charming and treacherous to anyone with high heels on!

Feel free to give it a try but bring along your favourite pair of flat sandals to be on the safe side… it can make or break your night! It is likely that you will need a light jacket for the evenings that are particularly breezy.
