THE HISTORY
What began once on a small scale has grown over the decades – from a rural inn to an active relaxation alpine hotel for nature-conscious, active fans, bon vivants and families who want a sense of the authentic.

The 100-year history is marked by numerous events that stand for the entire development of Tyrolean tourism. We are happy to give you an overview of the events of the past decades at the Zillergrund.

The Ziller – the roaring, bubbling and hissing waters that gave our valley its name have also helped make our hotel what it is today. Until 1914, the Zillergrund valley was entirely in its natural state until a few seasoned men decided to build a path that extended to the bottom of the valley.

Even back then, the area was very popular with hikers and smugglers because of its almost grotesque, wild nature. The fascination with this area has not diminished to this day – so our guests can still enjoy a place of tranquility and an intact landscape with numerous charms.

Pfister family Bought the lower Kröbas estate at the turn of the century. At that time, business was still handled with a handshake. Now the family could initiate construction projects, which were implemented with a strong will and a lot of physical commitment.

Stanis Pfister, the builder, realised his vision and and built a home and rest stop for visitors from all over the world. The idea of staying in the mountains was well received and outlasted both world wars, severe blows of fate and even the death of the builder himself.

Now the eldest son Wilhelm leads the inn. His son Stanis, who worked from 1931 to then in a hut in Lower Austria, returned with his wife Moidal to Tyrol and bought the lowe Kröbas estate from his brother Wilhelm.

He in turn bought the zum Stern tavern (now the Neue Post). The renewed expansion of the road around 1953 positively influenced the number of guests: There were already summer visitors who also spent longer periods in the lower Kröbas.

By that time, the children Anna and Rudolf were working in the company and cared lovingly for the well-being of the guests. Their father Stanis delighted the holidaymakers with his harp playing, which made him well-known beyond the borders.

The Zillertalers have always been diligent; they constantly renovated, and built and expanded attractive offerings for holidaymakers. In 1960, a stately inn was created; the business boom and they impressively showed that you can achieve a great deal with verve and good ideas.

In 1972, the inn was passed on to the son Rudolf and his wife Frieda, who at the same time generously rebuilt and expanded. The four children of Frieda and Rudolf all worked very diligently in the company until their eldest son Hermann took over the business in 1992, which he runs together with his wife Helga and their sons Christian and Rudolf.

The parents Frieda and Rudolf are still very engaged in the hotel. They prove that tourism is a matter of the heart, and it is only real when people are inspired by honest hospitality.

The spirit of tourism lives on in the fifth generation, Junior bosses Rudi and Christian are always looking after the well-being of all guests. The Hotel Zillergrund was expanded in 2008 with a swimming pool, completely refurbished in 2011, constantly renovated and maintained.

Guests now enjoy offerings for their well-being, an extensive activity programme and countless pleasurable moments. Perhaps the young family member Lucas will be able to tell you how things will progress with the hotel during your visit.

THE ZILLERTAL ADVENTURE WORLD
Immerse yourself in the adventure world of the Zillertal and look forward to excitement, fun and action. Fans of fresh air will really enjoy themselves with us because the Tyrolean mountains are more multifaceted than anywhere else.

The third largest municipality in Tyrol in terms of area with 178.8 km² lies in the back of the Zillertal: Mayrhofen with its partly scattered districts. Huge mountains surround you, including the Großer Löffler (3,379 m), which forms the border to the Ahrntal in South Tyrol / Italy. The name of the village derives from the “Meierhof”, a bishop’s court from around 1200 AD.

Moving on from the green valleys, your view wanders over the rugged cliffs to the glaciers of the Zillertal and Tuxer Alps. Not only are there numerous hiking trails and the Zillertal cable cars in these alpine regions, there is also a new Run & Walk park.

Runners and Nordic walking fans will find a total of eight routes here, including the well-known “Harakiri Hill” with 78 % gradient, one of the most demanding cross-country runs in Tyrol. You can then relax your tired muscles in our Natural Alpine Spa or our Ahornach pool.

OUR TIP: Travel through the valley on Zillertalbahn “steam engine” – it’s very nostalgic, without hustle and stress. At Jenbach you even have access to the normal railway network to Innsbruck, Bregenz, Vienna or Salzburg.

ADVENTURE
For all those who cannot get enough adventure in this natural paradise or want to try something completely new, rafting and tubing, paragliding and hang gliding or canyoning are recommended.

RAFTING
The start of the tour is the Ziller-Zemm estuary in Mayrhofen. After a safety discussion, the boat is placed into the water and the crew enters. Everyone should be seated in the boat when we take on the river and its waves. This tour is a fascinating adventure for the whole family – great fun and low risk!

The rafting highlight in the Imst Gorge. Let yourself be inspired by Europe’s most popular wild water route! Experience the wild waves and the thrill of the next highlight: The route passes straight through rollers, swells and rapids in the gigantic gorge between Imst and Haiming. Experience this stunning landscape yourself and with your friends. Great rafting fun for everyone!

There are not many routes in Austria that are more difficult to ride on a raft. The Ötztaler Ache is only offered in conjunction with the Imst Gorge as a prelude and training for this demanding tour.

You start by jumping in, swimming through rapids, training to flip the boat, and learning to follow the instructions of your guide exactly. Your safety is absolutely at risk here, so two guides are always on the boat.

After the boat-flipping and swimming training, your guide will decide whether the participants are fit for extreme rafting. The sunbeams, which glitter on the water, only occasionally penetrate to the bottom of the gorge. You are harnessed safely with a rope. Deep below you the water rushes over the rocks. Challenging descents at over 50 metres. Pure canyoning!

CANYONING, JUMPING & SLIDING
This tour is perfect for kids and families. Equipped with cold protection suits and a helmet you get the first insight into the fascination of canyoning during this varied and adventurous hike. It’s fun for the whole family!

THE BLUE LAGOON
The fun park among the canyoning tours and certainly the best canyoning tour in the Zillertal. With rope, harness, wetsuit and helmet, you are perfectly equipped for the canyon. You follow the path of the water and the guide rappels with a practised hand. Dare to jump into crystal-clear pools and penetrate ever deeper into the gorge.

For those who have already done our Blue Lagoon canyoning tour, but just cannot get enough. We offer a huge 2.5 km path spiked with granite, pools, jumps and rappel points from the entrance to the exit at the “6er Gumpen”. – More canyoning!

THE WHITE SNAKE
It lies in the forest waiting for you – the white snake. Breathtaking and respectful, it rushes thundering into the valley. And we rappel with her through raging waterfalls. We fight onward in this unreal world through bubbling pools. Independent rappeling is required here!

SWIMMING
There are lots of options for swimming in the Zillertal! 6 modern outdoor swimming pools, the swimming lake in Schlitters, the amusement park in Aschau and the diverse thermal spa Zillertal ensure carefree swimming and splashing pleasure. Tip: The Zillertal Activcard includes a daily visit to one of the 6 outdoor pools!

HIGH ROPES GARDENS
Climbing fun for the whole family is guaranteed when you visit one of the Zillertal high ropes courses in Kaltenbach and Gerlos or the Skyline in Gerlosstein.

The high ropes course Zillertal is located in the romantic Zemmschlucht. Built in the middle of the forest on natural trees, it lies on the edge of a ravine. 32 exercises spread over different levels of difficulty will test your self-confidence to its limits.

Deep views of 88 metres into the Zemmschlucht demand your full attention. 3 rope slides with a length of 120 metres bring you from station to station or back to the forest floor.

Our high ropes course is no off-piste climbing park, but the highest and most spectacular forest ropes course in the Zillertal. That is why you will be supervised by a high ropes course trainer on the tour.

CLIMBING
Climbing has a long tradition in Zillertal. So the options for all climbing and bouldering fans are accordingly varied. A total of nine climbs, an indoor climbing hall in Aschau, a bouldering hall in Mayrhofen and an outdoor climbing tower in Gerlos are available. It is also possible to participate in guided climbing tours.

The Huterlaner fixed rope course is almost in Mayrhofen and is very popular due to its convenient location. We recommend this course especially for beginning climbers and children. The Gasthof Zimmereben invites you for a rest right at the exit.

A not very difficult, but rather exposed rock passage marks the beginning of this new route. With almost 700 climbing metres and about 300 metres of altitude, the via ferrata is recommended for advanced people.

The special features of this via ferrata include various very beautiful passages – some vertical wall parts and a good view of Mayrhofen. The guest house Zimmereben can be reached in 5 minutes.

The Zimmereben via ferrata is also located near Mayrhofen. This climb impresses, above all, with the strongly overhanging entryway, which has already deterred many climbers. Great when done in combination with the Hutelan via ferrata.

This alpine via ferrata with its location and its northern wall ambience is certainly one of the best of its kind. From the mountain station Gerlossteinbahn, you reach the entrance in about 45 minutes. After another 2.5 hours walk through the north face, you are standing on the summit of Gerlosstein.

The starting point of this climb is the mountaineering village Ginzling. The difficulty of the via ferrata lies with the category “CE” in the middle to upper range. Its length of 400 metres and the exposure make it a really challenging “Via Ferrata”.

ROCK’N’ROLL SWING
Pure adrenaline! Stand on the edge of a gorge, look into the abyss and jump! The Rock’n’Roll Swing is our highlight, where every adrenaline junky gets their money’s worth.

Double-secured on 2 ropes, you stand at the jump, your pulse races, and you plunge into the depths. After a few metres of free fall, you swing through the canyon. When your pulse slowly returns to normal you are already at the bottom of the canyon and want to get it right back to this feeling of flying! That’s pure rock’n’roll.

FREE GUIDED TOURS
Spend your summer vacation at the foot of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. The Zillertal Alps Nature Park in Tyrol is completely off limits to Austria public roads, helicopter flights or lifts for tourism purposes.

The high mountain landscape, which was already known under the name Zillertal Hauptkamm, came under protection in 1991. In 2001, it was designated a “Nature Park”, an internationally recognised category of protection. The park covers an area of 379 km ² and extends from approx. 1000 m up to 3510 m.

SUMMER PROGRAMME
The Nature Park summer programme offers over 200 guided hikes with our nature park guides on more than 30 different topics from May to October. The hikes are aimed at guests as well as locals, who can get to know the park from new perspectives.

Whether it is on our Hike to the Berliner Hütte, our herb hike, exciting ranger tour, wildlife observation or a hike with Peter Habeler on the Ahornspitze peak. Of course, there are also special offers for families and children, such Lama trekking, Waldwichteltag or the Alm Adventure in Zillergrund. The hikes are free for our guests!

CRAZY WALLS, GLACIERS & SUMMITS
Eight mountain huts, numerous “three-thousanders” with rugged cliffs and unique vegetation complete the character of this high alpine mountain landscape

ALPINE BIKE HOLIDAY
A particularly nice, if sometimes a bit exhausting, way to experience the unique Zillertal mountain panorama is by biking! The 30 km long Zillertal Cycle Path, which snakes its way through the valley, is ideal for family cycling tours. And the Zillertal High Road and the Gerlos Pass are for racing cyclists.

The Alpin Lodge das Zillergrund is also a new member of “Mountain Bike Holidays”. This association has been the European market leader in the field of equipment and services for mountain bikers since 1996.

The high standard of “Mountain Bike Holidays“ is guaranteed by the annual inspection of routes and certification by TÜV Austria, meaning that nothing stands in the way of you enjoying an amazing biking holiday.

Only the best is good enough for our guests, which is why we are also inspected and certified by “Mountain Bike Holidays” in the “Elite” category. The gold standard for mountain bike hotels, so to speak.

E-BIKES
For all those who want to climb the mountains by bike without having to exert too much effort during their holiday at the Zillergrund, the electric bike is exactly the right choice. You can rent 8 brand new “E-Power X Vert FACTORY 650B+ 2019” e-bikes directly in our hotel – 2 of them for children from 10 to 12 years + 2 brand new “KTM” city bikes.

The Bosch performance engine fits perfectly with the light, streamlined bikes. The drive uphill is enormous and the balanced geometry ensures plenty of agility, but also safety and directional stability. The electric bike is also a pleasure to ride off-road.

GOLF
The Zillertal offers everything a golfer’s heart desires. The picturesque 18-hole Uderns championship course in the Zillertal has a spacious practice area with covered tees and a short game area with putting green, pitching green and chipping green including sand bunker.

The Zillergrund founders celebrate this holiday with you: Enjoy regional Zillertal specialties such as donuts, Melchermuas, Zerggl, farmhouse bread, bacon, grilled, stone pine schnapps and sweets and look forward to musical and traditional performances by bands.

TRADITIONAL SPRING START WITH THE “GRASAUSLÄUTEN”.

At the present time it is difficult to imagine that in the past special spring customs should help drive off the cold winter. One of these customs is the “Grasausläuten”, People parade through meadows and grasses with bells to accelerate the growth of the fields and meadows.

Many parades and processions take place especially in late spring and early summer. With the Blessed Sacrament, the parish moves through blossoming nature and is accompanied by people, bands and marksmen.

These rituals are usually a way to hope against lightning and thunderstorms and have a long tradition. The uniforms and standards of the individual clubs and participating bands are especially worth seeing. You really shouldn’t miss it.
