The Castello del Sole is nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Maggia Delta in Ascona. Our resort is located in the midst of a unique natural setting of 140 hectares of land: this includes our own farm with its own vineyards, a WWF protected bird sanctuary and is situated directly on the idyllic shores of Lake Maggiore.
The Castello del Sole also has apple, pear and nut trees scattered throughout the resort, which are always available for guests to pluck for their small appetites. Deceleration and sustainable luxury find here the perfect symbiosis for our guests.
Consisting of three building complexes, the Castello del Sole has a total of 79 rooms and suites. Our buildings are divided into a retreat part, a wellbeing part and the main building.

Authenticity and our timeless values are our hallmark: Castello del Sole is truly steeped in history and we continue writing its story together with you.
But let’s go back to the very beginning, to 1532, when Castello del Sole was built by Francesco Orelli and served as a hiding place for the followers of the new Protestant teachings. In 1756 it was mentioned for the first time as an “architectural gem”.
Around 1900 it was run as a simple osteria, a wayside inn, with six rooms for guests. In the decades thereafter it was transformed into an exclusive hotel property. The character of this incomparable complex has been preserved and supplemented with contemporary luxury.

FLY FISHING WITH MAURO GUIDALI
Fly fishing is a special kind of nature experience – a fascinating combination of fishing and hunting – meditative moments included. Together with an experienced fly fisherman, beginners first practice in the park of Castello del Sole before heading towards the river in the beautiful Val Lavizzara.

FOREST BATHING
Forest bathing is a practice of reconnecting with nature through the awakening of the five senses and originated in Japan in the eighties under the name of “Shinrin yoku”, literally “forest bath”.
In “Forest Bathing,” you immerse yourself in the natural elements and get a different perspective on nature than the one we are used to from a walk in the forest.
This experience takes shape thanks to sensory reflections that the guide proposes and which serve to activate all the senses. They are then connected to the feeling and Being in the present moment.
There are numerous scientific studies that prove the profound effect of forest bathing on the psychophysical health: Reduction of anxiety, stress, anger, lowering of blood pressure, Slowing the heartbeat, strengthening the immune system, to name just a few examples.

With more than 1,400 kilometres of hiking trails in the area around the lake, hikers can explore to their heart’s content – from the valleys of Locarnese and Gambarogno to the high peaks of the Ticino mountains.

CYCLING
Our bicycles are available to anyone wanting to explore the surrounding area. Those who prefer more arduous and exciting outings at great heights will find just what their cycling hearts desire in the varied countryside of Ticino.
We offer you eventful mountain biking or racing excursions with Oliver Zaugg, a former professional cyclist and winner of the Tour of Lombardy (aka Il Lombardia).

Shopping is always an option in Ticino! Be it in the lanes of Ascona, the streets of Locarno, Lugano and Milano or at Fox Town, an outlet centre near the motorway. The markets in Ticino and in Italy are genuine visitor magnets, emanating their own special kind of charm.
THE BRISSAGO ISLANDS
The Brissago Islands are the Canton Ticino’s botanical park. The little island (Isola Piccola or St. Apollinaire) is covered with spontaneous vegetation, mostly from the Insubrica region, kept in its natural state.
On the big island (Isola Grande or St. Pancrazio), which was opened to the public in 1950, mostly subtropical plants with origins from the northern and southern hemisphere are grown.
BOLLE DI MAGADINO
The Bolle of Magadino, between the mouth of the Verzasca and the Magadino plain, are a precious and renowned wildlife refuge.
The Bolle di Magadino, one of nine water meadow landscapes considered by the Swiss Academy for Natural Science to be of international importance, includes the delta of the Ticino and Verzasca rivers at Lake Maggiore.
The Bolle are home to a unique fauna and flora found in areas between firm ground and water. Thanks to the provision of nature trails it is possible to visit the Bolle without interfering with or harming its natural inhabitants too extensively.
A visit to the Bolle is pleasant any time of the year, however, snow does give the landscape a fairytale appearance! Three access points in Magadino and one in the Tenero-Gordola area lead to the nature trails with German and Italian information boards.
THE FORTRESS OF BELLINZONA
Unique within the Alps, the three castles of Bellinzona are one of the main attractions of Ticino and have been listed UNESCO World Heritage sites since the year 2000. With its bastions, walls, towers, battlements and gates, this imposing fortification is truly a sight to behold.
