ZERMATTERHOF A HOTEL WITH A HISTORY
Towards the end of the 19th century, the remote mountain village of Zermatt was an up-and-coming summer resort. Wealthy city-dwellers would withdraw, often for several weeks at a time, to this retreat in the mountains for their summer holidays.

The vicar who thought outside the box
The village vicar at that time, Josef Ruden, came up with an unusual idea to help his congregation: the oldest families in the area – the burghers of Zermatt – should take economic advantage of the surge in tourism by building a hotel.

The burghers become hoteliers
The energetic vicar succeeded in motivating the burghers of Zermatt to do as he suggested and, over the three years from 1876 to 1879, they turned his vision into a reality by building the Zermatterhof. With its 94 rooms and 150 beds, at that time the Zermatterhof was the largest of all the hotels at the foot of the Matterhorn.

Labouring for the good of society
In order not to inflict huge debts on themselves and their fellow citizens, the burghers of Zermatt promised to work for free on the construction of the hotel. In return for this charitable work they were granted usufructuary rights to the property, which in essence continue to apply today.

Today the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof welcomes illustrious guests into its five-star surroundings in exactly the same way as it has done ever since 1879.

ROOMS & SUITES
Our rooms and suites are your personal refuge whenever you want complete privacy. Newly renovated, they offer all the conveniences that you would expect of a room in a hotel of the highest calibre.

True to the grand hotel ethos, they are not the product of a robotic search through a fashionable interior design catalogue, but are places you can really live in.

CHALET SUITE MATTERHORN
Situated on the top floor and with its own separate entrance, this spacious suite will give you the sense of being on holiday in your very own chalet. Surrounded by such comfort and cosiness, you will feel so at home you may not even wish to step outside. That would be a pity, but totally understandable.

DELUXE ROOMS
Because sometimes you deserve that something extra. Space is a real luxury in Zermatt and this room offers both. Perhaps not enough space to trip the light fantastic, but more than enough in which to relax and simply be.

DINING
The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof has three restaurants with a wide variety of cuisines: the Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni, the Brasserie Lusi and the “saycheese!” Swiss cheese restaurant.

ALPINE GOURMET PRATO BORNI
In the new Prato Borni restaurant local products are worked and combined with great sensitivity to produce a unique culinary experience. Not only the guests, but also the restaurant critics agree: the Prato Borni is awarded 16 GaultMillau points and a Michelin star.

“HEIMAT”
When it comes to good food and drink, the Valais is without doubt the richest and most blessed region in Switzerland. From the highest peaks of the Alps down into the Rhône Valley and then on to Lake Geneva, right across the region an incomparable diversity of products is able to grow and flourish.

The waters of Lake Geneva are teeming with freshwater fish, while the crystal-clear mountain streams also abound with life. Game, too, has been a feature of local menus since well before anyone can remember.

Shielded from the worst of the elements by the towering high mountains, the Rhône Valley enjoys a particularly warm and dry climate. Thanks to these special conditions, fruit and vegetables that would otherwise only be found much further south can ripen to perfection in the sunshine of the Valais.

And lest we forget, the region also produces an array of outstanding wines, pressed in the traditional way. Indeed, a third of all Swiss wine comes from the Valais.

LUSI BRASSERIE & LOUNGE
Enjoy French or international cuisine in the brasserie with a drink in Lusi Lounge to follow – all while taking in the best views of Zermatt. We offer a selection of meals from French and international cuisine at Brasserie Lusi.

For the ultimate dining experience, pair your meal with Swiss or French wines. Lusi Lounge is undoubtedly the finest terrace in Zermatt.

Order a small bite to eat and pair it with the perfect refreshment – the splendor of the Alps will put your time on hold for a while. It’s purely magical. The Brasserie Lusi is newly awarded 13 points GaultMillau.

SAYCHEESE!
Guests expect nothing less than top quality when visiting a Swiss cheese restaurant in a grand hotel. Naturally, “saycheese!” in the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof offers all that and more.

For the restaurant’s young team, “saycheese!” is a way of life. Everyone is in a good mood. The atmosphere is relaxed. The quality of the cheese is exceptional.

All of the cheeses on the menu come from the Valais region, and this of course includes the exquisite Mutschli cheese from the “Zermatter Horu” cheese dairy. The chef recommends the Zermatterhof fondue, which is served either with champagne, with winter truffles or with porcini mushrooms.

HOW DO YOU DO BAR
How Do You Do is more than just a café. It is also a bar and lounge. It is a place where you can simply sit back and switch off, and where it is difficult to answer the question “How do you do?” with anything other than “Wonderfully relaxed.”

SMOKERS LOUNGE
The Smokers Lounge in the Stars Bar is open all day. Black leather upholstery and an open fire invite you to stay and relax. Of course you are also welcome to enjoy drinks from the bar in the Smokers’ Lounge. A smooth brandy or mature whisky will make a particularly fitting accompaniment to your fine cigar.

THE STARS BAR
The Stars Bar is just the place to mull over the day’s events and relish the evening. Here each moment becomes a memory worth savouring.

The Stars Bar offers an extensive menu of fashionable cocktails and traditional drinks. With gentle piano music, rosy faces and contented smiles all around, it is easy to enjoy the Stars Bar until deep, deep into the night.

ACTIVITIES IN ZERMATT
You can go skiing in Zermatt any time of year. But there is so much more to discover. Here are a few insider tips. Some traditional, some unconventional, but always with the aim of providing a unique experience. And a few old familiar favourites, too, because those things can also make us happy.

A shopping excursion
The shops on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt offer a variety of international brands, everything from sparkling jewels to functional sports equipment, as well as Swiss chocolate and typical Zermatt souvenirs. After all, wouldn’t your friends and family at home enjoy a small gift from your trip?

A walking tour through the village
The old village of Zermatt begins just beside the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. The houses, barns and granaries are immersed in history. With our detailed guide of the tour (approx. 1.5 hours), you can discover Zermatt at your own pace.

A trip back in time
In 1865, the first ascent of the Matterhorn captivated the imagination of the world. Triumph, tragedy and the start of Zermatt’s transformation from a small mountain village to an internationally renowned holiday destination. You can learn more about this historical event at the Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis.

Clay pigeon shooting
You will shoot using a real Fausti shotgun, albeit one that has been converted to infrared technology, making it completely safe. The reusable clay pigeons are equipped with receptors and are fired from high-quality traps.

Up in the sky high above Zermatt
A sightseeing flight over the majestic Matterhorn and the other magnificent peaks in the Valais Alps is an unforgettable experience. Especially when you can also take in breathtaking views of rugged glaciers. Air Zermatt also flies special routes on request.

Eye to eye with the Matterhorn
From the Gornergrat, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of 29 peaks that are all at least 4000 metres above sea level, including the Matterhorn, the mountain of mountains! In short: the Gornergrat is a place that you have to experience at least once in your life – or, even better, a few times a year!

Sunrise at Gornergrat
That magic moment when the sun kisses the Matterhorn’s peak is incomparable: shades of ultra-violet and blue metamorphose to gold and fiery reds until the mountain is totally illuminated by the sun. This sunrise must surely be on everyone’s bucket list and will be an unforgettable memory.

Summer’s days in the mountains
There are plenty of ways of expending energy in the fresh, clean Zermatt mountain air: hiking (400 km of paths), climbing and mountaineering (easy via ferrata and 38 four-thousanders), mountain biking (100 km of trails), skiing (Europe’s highest all-year-round skiing region) or playing golf (9-hole course) – but there is also the option of doing nothing, and simply enjoying summer in the Zermatt mountains from the terrace at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof.

Gorner gorge
A summer visit to the Gorner gorge is guaranteed to be an unforgettable trip for the whole family. Excursions with mountain guides offer the best possible experience.

Our insider tip: if you are planning to head to the gorge from mid-September onwards, you will be able to see the gorge in the best light conditions and gaze in awe at the magical blue water.

Mystical, majestic
The Matterhorn: no one can escape its fascination. Standing alone on the horizon, a magnet for alpinists, mountain with ideal proportions.

Rugged rock with magical light. Playing in a sea of clouds and horizontal colouring. On 14 July 1865, climbers stood on the summit of the Matterhorn for the first time in history. Seeing enough of the Matterhorn? Not possible!

Ice stock sport
Ice stock sport, also known as Bavarian curling, is similar to curling, but has its own unique rules and, most importantly, a long history as a local pastime in areas where the rivers and lakes freeze in the winter.

There are team competitions as well as distance and target competitions. No matter how you play, one thing is certain ice stock sport is fun! (And curling too, of course.)

Winter pastimes
The Zermatt skiing area is Europe’s highest skiing region, with more than 360 kilometres of stunning pistes in both Switzerland and Italy. Lifts go up as far as the Klein Matterhorn, at 3,883 metres above sea level.

Lovers of the snow can enjoy the area even without skis, as this sun-drenched mountain region offers plenty of magnificent views and even more mountain restaurants with glorious sun terraces.
